deja vu - coup de foudre (bob reynolds x cosmic!reader) (2/2)
Summary: Operation Lovebirds officially begins. Yelena recruits the help of another (New) Avenger to get two powered beings together. Not foreseeing that an unexpected entity had their own agenda.
avoir un coup de foudre pour quelquâun: "to have a thunderbolt for someone", to have fallen in love with someone at first sight
Warnings: fluff, language, Sentry makes a few appearances
Word count: 5.6k
Author's note: I'm not obligated to write anything, so show some decency in the space you're in. With that out of the way, this is the last part. I told myself I wouldn't write Sentry because I'm afraid of misrepresenting him with Bob's mental health. Sentry wants to be here? I'm not strong enough to turn him away! Initially, only one appearance was supposed to happen. But still, a few events in this change the timeline a bit with the 14 months phase. I think a plot point in this happened in another Bob story. Check out Em's fic! It bothered me that we don't really see Entropy's abilities other than her pure mutant form in the first chapter, so I love that we see a bit more. Especially since Sentry is on a Scarlet Witch level and Magneto's kid should hold her own against someone like that (if she'd set her mind to it). When I envisioned the sound of one of her powers, I didn't realize I imagined the teleportation sound Doctor Manhattan makes đ Wait, did I write the "secure friendship" thing already in the for the love of ...bob? series? đ Talking about deja vu. Remember guys, reblogging and writing a nice comment is love. No criticizing my work! Don't like it, keep moving.

Bob shook his head, trying to avoid Yelenaâs all-too-knowing gaze.
âUh, I-Iâm just not sure about that. Things are just so different now.â
Both were sitting at the kitchen island when she dropped her chin on her forearms. âCome on, Bob. Why?â Yelena groaned. âOnly because of the memory loss? Kinda ironic. First, you didnât want to get involved with her because of the Void coming out and now itâs not you, itâs her.â Thinking hard, she stared into the distance. âOr did I mean tragic?â
Bob fiddled with the end of his spoon, needing something to do with his fingers, just anything to distract himself. An awkward smile tugged at his lips. âWeâre in a good place right now. Y/N is starting to find her footing again. Her memories are coming back to her little by little. Not to mention, sheâs vulnerable.â
âBob. Sweet Bob,â Yelena wailed, behaving like a frustrated child that wanted to stay up even longer and who didnât get her wish. Shaking her head in disappointment, she remained undeterred. âWhy donât you just try your shot? This feels so unnecessary. As much as I love the entertainment, youâre torturing me.â
Bob exhaled wearily. He hated letting Yelena down, but he figured after all they endured together, Bob was owed some leeway. Besides, on the one hand, he didnât want to mess things up with Entropy, if it didnât work out in the long run. And on the other hand, if he didnât ask you out, then you wouldnât have the option to laugh in his face while wholeheartedly uttering ânoâ.
âSorry to disappoint that we wonât offer any entertainment for you.â
âDonât despair, mon frère.â With an unperturbed air, she tapped his shoulder. âIâm still your wingwoman.â With a spring in her step, Yelena jumped up from her seat.
Bob coughed. Now he was getting nervous. A Yelena who had her mind set on something was a truly dangerous combination. âYel-Yelena, w-what are you doing?â
She smirked. Innocence enveloped her like a halo when she cocked her hip and smacked her lips. âNothing.â
Yelenaâs hidden strategy played like a loop in Bobâs mind the whole morning. He was reading a book on the couch while idly eating a wrap. So sunken in his own head, he barely detected his surroundings until he heard a slurping sound diagonally across from him.
With a wince, Bob turned his head. âOh hi, how long have you been sitting there?â
There you were sitting in the armchair, slowly eating yogurt with granola and fruit. Even while eating, your gaze hadnât turned away, as if you had been unabashedly staring at him this whole time, just waiting for him to notice.
You smiled. âA while. How mesmerizing is that book?â
Bob chuckled. âItâs good.â He closed it again, placing it on the cushion to give you his attention instead. âYou couldâve said something. I couldâve made you that French Toast you like.â
âAnd take away my amusement for the day?â
Bob leaned back and looked at you with a fascinated gaze. He muttered under his breath, âAmusement, huh?â
âSue me.â You shrugged. âI just like looking at you when your attention is really zeroed in.â
It was moments like these when you just knew how to get under his skin. Or his cheeks flush. Not with embarrassment, but with a nervous sentiment that left his stomach in knots around you. Bob looked at you before turning his gaze to his lap with a chuckle, not knowing what else to say. âOkay.â
He looked up again when you were quiet for several seconds. âAnd now youâre just looking at me?â
âIsnât it fun?â
âVery.â
âYou should try it sometime, Bob.â
âStare at you?â He cleared his throat. Not knowing if itâd sound creepy if he admitted he loved watching you on a daily occurrence. Knowing that you would stare at him in return prompted his eyes to wander anywhere else, feeling flustered at the mere idea already.
Absentmindedly, his thumbs stroked the wrap in his hand before he lifted it to his mouth, but then he hesitated. âYouâre not going to keep staring at me while Iâm eating, right?â
Frowning, you spoke dryly. âThatâd be weird, Bob. Just watching you eat.â You shook your head. âI still have to focus on finishing my own breakfast, you know?â
âRight.â Bob chuckled before finally succumbing to his appetite.
Almost like a phantasm reminding him of his previous contemplation, Yelena accompanied Ava while speaking in hushed voices.
Their exchange kept going until Ava spoke monotonously. âOh no, whatever am I gonna do?â Her arms pointed downwards in a tense way.
Bob tilted his head, narrowing his eyes in concentration.
With greeted teeth, Yelena mumbled, âI thought you used to be a SHIELD operative?â
âEverything okay?â You inquired.
Revealing a wide smile, Ava called out, âYeah, Iâm fine.â Her next words were grumbled, almost reluctant. âUh, because I donât care about this? And maybe Iâm not that into manipulating my friend.â
If Ava flashing a smile was an unexpected and unsettling thought already, their hushed voices reaching his sensitive ears, clear as day, was the proverbial nail in the coffin that something was afoot. The question was if Yelenaâs game plan was more of a mischievous or sinister nature.
âItâs not manipulation when you know itâs a good thing weâre doing.â Yelena tried to convince her.
âIâve had a crazy thought.â It was a good thing that you pulled Bob back before his mind could get lost in shadowing their spy friends and their secret plan.
He cleared his throat and stared back at you with renewed curiosity and a soft smile on his lips. âHit me with that crazy thought.â
âSo, itâs been a long time since Iâve actually been outside.â
He nodded. âAbout a few weeks.â
Wait, was it weird that he knew this?
Bob tilted his head, listening in on that change in the air. A buzzing sensation lingered. After glancing out of the corner of his eye, his suspicions were indeed confirmed. Yelena was leaning against the kitchen island while staring intensely at Bob and you. With her partner in crime seemingly gone.
âRight. I donât know. I was just wondering if youâd be up for some Pizza.â
Bob stared intently at a spot over your shoulder. Uncertainty rose in you when the golden shimmer of Sentry flickered in its initial stages. You tried to ignore the strange presence, getting the sensation that focusing on Bobâs godly side slowly taking over was more important.
Still, you kept on, hoping he would revert back over time. âCould be fun. To just hit up the pizza place for a change without just going for our usual takeout.â
âSounds fun.â He spoke mechanically.
The tingling phenomenon overtaking your body was starting to get to you. Turning your upper body, you looked over your shoulder. You frowned darkly. There was nothing visible to the light and yet you could see the hum in the atmosphere.
âWhat are you doing?â You uttered slowly.
The golden shimmer was fully shining through in his eyes. The cadence in his voice changed when Sentry whispered deeply from his throat. âAva.â
At the mention of her name, she turned visible again. Ava cleared her throat while she kept him in her peripheral sight. âUh, you good, Sentry?â
Yelenaâs back stood ramrod straight, not daring to inch away from her position. âSentry?â she echoed cautiously.
Your body language didnât change. You knew Bob had himself and the sun god under control. However, your eyes still wouldnât stray from his.
Sentryâs intense stare remained steadfast on yours. With each breath his chest was moving slowly. Despite the intensity he broadly displayed, his arm was stretched out on the backrest of the couch.
The longer he just stared, heat was building up in your body in response. With each lingering second that Sentry wouldnât talk, your pulse rose. You narrowed your eyes at his antics.
âIâm good.â
While Bob was constantly moving and had his nervous mannerisms, it was slightly unsettling that in his Sentry form he was a tad more rigid. His facial tics were somewhat a small comfort. To know that underneath he was still your Bob.
Avaâs exhaling breaths were the first sign of the deflating tension in the room. âThatâs-thatâs grand.â Her gaze wandered to you when his stare wouldnât ease up and he just remained silent. You could tell that Sentry not uttering a single word was starting to get to her. âI just wanted to talk to this one.â She tapped your shoulder, trying to make him feel more at ease. Or at least enough so she could feel more at ease herself.
âDonât stop on my account then.â He casually waved a hand, without moving his arm away.
âAlright.â Ava sat down on the armrest of the couch, with her hip barely on the edge and trying to ignore the golden-eyed guy just watching them. âSo, I have a request to make. I heard you guys are stopping by the pizza joint?â
Before you could say anything in return, Sentry sardonically widened his eyes before interjecting, âWho spilled the beans?â
Ava turned her head to see Sentryâs head nestle against the back of the couch while displaying a wide and unbothered smile. His facial muscles twitched with the effort. His grin was saying one thing while his eyes shifting into something blank were telling a different story. âIâm kidding, Ava. Bygones.â He shrugged, like he had already forgiven her for eavesdropping on you in the first place. Despite his claim it was still challenging to get a read on his body language when he was in his divine state.
Trying to get back on track, you probed, âWhat did you want to ask?â
Ava turned back to you. âI was wondering if you could make another pit stop. Maybe get some snacks for me?â With that said, she placed a piece of paper into the inside of your palm.
Unfolding the note, your face lit up at the unexpected items she chose. âOh, I canât remember since-â
âI didnât have those since I was a kid,â she admitted with a whisper.
There was no other choice to make when you nodded without further incentive. It made sense to you why Ava would feel vulnerable with that tidbit of information about her. âSay no more.â With a small smile, you folded it back to its original state.
Your gaze wandered over to Sentry. âYou want to add something to the list?â you said, waving the folded paper in the air.
âUh, I donât-I donât know really.â He shrugged, blinking. At once the blue in his eyes was back, with a small smile tugging at his lips.
âGuess weâre going all spur of the moment,â you added.
âSounds cool,â Bob replied.
Deciding that writing into the group chat was the quickest way to go, you tried to find out everyoneâs dinner plans.
Entropy: Does anyone else want to join Bob and me for some pizza slices?
Walker: đ Uh, I was actually up for some K-BBQ.
Entropy: Look at youâŚ
Entropy: Oh man, Iâm missing some Korean tonight?
Walker: I mean, I think thatâs tonight? Itâs tonight, right, guys?
Yelena: Oh yeah, totally.
Bucky: I donât care as long as thereâs food.
Walker: đ
Entropy: What?
Ava: Donât mind the walking flag.
Alexei: Iâm with Mr. Winter Soldier!
Entropy: Well, save us some.
Ava: đ Donât worry, weâll pick something good for you.
Walker: What do I gotta do to make you this nice to me?
Ava: I donât know. Gain the ability to shapeshift into Y/N?
Walker: đ Very cute.
Entropy: And Iâll find out what youâre trying to hide from me đ§
Yelena: Donât know what youâre talking about đ
Entropy: Bob, do you know something?
Walker: You actually think Bob knows something?
Bob: Uh, I donât know anything. I swear, Iâm innocent in this.
Entropy: đ¤ Hmmm⌠See you later then guys.
âSo, you want to disclose the big mystery?â
You didnât bother wasting any time the moment you sat down at the table of the quaint pizza joint. Figuring that once Bob was absorbed in his first bite, he would let his guard down, so you could get some answers.
He was in the middle of chewing when he stared at you with wide eyes. He swallowed. âI donât-I swear Iâm not a part of whatever they got planned.â
You narrowed your eyes at the absolute vagueness of his words. âSo, you do know something, Bob.â
He leaned back with an exhaling breath before he avoided your stare. âYou-you know, s-super hearing is actually not something I can turn off. And I canât really command them not to do something once they have their minds set.â
You hummed, still not feeling any wiser than you were before.
âI donât wanna lie to you, Y/N,â Bob whispered, timidly studying you from under his eyelashes.
And just like that Bob and his soft eyes were getting to you, pleading with you not to resent him for wanting to be honest with you while remaining the epitome of loyalty to his friends. You sighed, feeling yourself swoon at the mere puppy dog eyes he displayed.
âJust tell me one thing.â Seeing Bob nod slowly, you continued, âDonât tell me Iâm part of the next PR event.â
He released the breath he was holding when a relieved smile lit up his face. âI swear. Or at least I donât know anything about that.â Bob scrutinized the expression on your face. âYou must be pretty traumatized from the last time, huh?â
A hesitant smile lingered. âWhy?â
âYou know, with the schmoozing at the last fundraiser?â When your facial reaction remained the same, he added, âThe suit and tie event. You were wearing this golden dress with the slit at the side and-â Bob cleared his throat when he caught your stare, like you could picture the exact dress he described.
With blushing cheeks, he shrugged. âAnyway, I only remembered like a few congressmen standing around you, trying to strike up a conversation when-â
At the mere memory, your body felt so light. Like you could just float if youâd let yourself.
âI split time.â You spoke fondly as you rested your cheek against your palm, leaning forward. You could still remember the overwhelming sensation of the moment in question. It had left a bitter taste in your mouth. Knowing how much you needed just a moment to breathe. The pulsating sound of your power still rang through your mind, like a monochromatic shockwave breaking through the sound barrier and pulling you outside of time. Leaving the faces and bodies of the bystanders all blurry. Like smudged paintings with no distinct characteristics to tell and the ink smeared downwards.
âYou were the first and the only person who could see what I was doing. And then you were just standing right next to me while everyone remained frozen in time. And what did you-what was it you said again?â Your eyes studied his face, like it was carrying the answer you were seeking.
âDonât you just hate it-â Bob started.
Alongside him, you completed his words. â-when people parade you around like a circus animal?â
Bob remained in awe, like it was yesterday. âIâve never seen anything like it. It was just really cool to witness.â
âYouâre such a charmer.â
With blushing cheeks, he chuckled. It was the only sound you could focus on around you.
This day was working against her.
Yelena was just minding her own business and already Walker decided to eat up her favorite cereal and someone in the towerâshe was not pointing fingers, but her father did have a guilty expression on his face when she askedâforgot to include it on the shopping list way in advance. So this one thing managed to put her in a sour mood, the worst omen which could have happened to indicate this was just the beginning for her day.
She could hear urgent steps getting closer. One glance upwards, Yelena felt her mood begin to lift again when she recognized him.
âBob, youâre a sight for sore eyes.â Yelena exhaled, not realizing his stormy gaze when he gripped his phone tightly in his hand with each advancing step.
That was before Bob finally got close to her and only held the device right in front of her face as the only morning greeting. âTell me you didnât send it in.â
Yelena blinked at the unexpected confrontation, mumbling quietly, âDo I need coffee for this?â
She studied the New York Post article he had on his phone. The headline Blossoming romance in the TowerâIs Sentropy the new It couple? was striking enough and only enhanced by the bold letters. Her eyes widened instantly, added with the evidence of Bob and Entropyâs post-pizza date.
Yelena carefully observed the printed pictures of the two of you carrying paper bags, looking all domestic. Both appeared truly relaxed, with you leaning against Bobâs shoulder and Bob caught in the middle of laughter. Yelena had to commend the photographer for choosing the perfect moment to snap the best picture. Even she would have thought those two were dating.
âDamn, you guys look cute.â She spoke under her breath. Yelena bit her lip when her eyes nervously met his. She quickly skimmed the article and couldnât help reading the part out which caught her eye, âan anonymous source close to the couple confirmed that theyâve been savoring their dates in the Tower and those two were taking it slow and enjoying each otherâs companyâ.
Her eyes widened once the magnitude hit her and why Bob was so unsettled by this. Their lives might be staged for all the public to see, but this was something different.
Judging by the content of the article, there was still the foundation of truth layered underneath. If one ignored the part of the two of you going out on actual dates. Yelena wouldnât hear the end of it by Bob if this truly, and finally, happened. But still, this story could have been about anyone on this team. Not to mention, it wasnât such a surprise that Bob and you were spending time together.
Suspicion instantly grew in her at reading about these fictionalized events coming from an anonymous source.
âItâs flattering that you thought of me, but I wouldnât wash our laundry in public just so you could make your move. A bit overkill, even for me.â Feeling concerned, she mentioned the one thing which was on his mind. âDid she see it yet?â
Bob shook his head and scrutinized how his fingers fiddled with his phone. âI donât know.â With a guilty expression, he answered, âI-Iâm sorry.â
She waved a hand. âItâs okay.â
He sighed, smiling abashedly. âIâm hoping I can break the news to her gently.â
âGood luck with that.â
Your head looked up when you heard the faint knocks at the door. With an exhaling breath, you rested against the headboard of the bed. At the flick of your fingers, the curtains opened with the telekinetic force, dispelling the darkness in the room with the morning light. âCome in.â
Bobâs awkward smile greeted you when he opened the door. âMorning. I wanted to-â
His eyes caught your phone lying next to you on the duvet while you were sitting cross-legged under the covers. Once he identified the unmistakable font of the newspaper article, he released the heaviest sigh you ever heard. His entire body just came undone. âYou already saw it.â
You put a smile on your face while your hand covered the lower half of your face, even if you didnât see the humor of the situation yet. âVery entertaining read for the morning. Fascinating how the media knew something about our lives before I even did. Guess theyâre the experts, so they canât be wrong. Truly informative.â
With a dejected sigh, Bob sat down on the duvet. âI-Iâm sorry.â
âWhatâs one more story? Good news, you look cute though.â You waved your phone cheekily, even if you didnât inherently feel that emotion. You figured that faking it until you made it was a safe strategy. Who knew that you could feel tired despite just waking up?
Bob snorted, but still kept eyeing you. Like he was waiting for the other shoe to drop. âNow thatâs a relief.â He gradually shifted closer until he was close enough for you to feel his radiating warmth.
Accepting his silent invitation, you snuggled into his side. If anything, you were getting the sensation that you could finally breathe again when you let go of the tension.
âIf you want, I could let loose. Make people forget they ever saw us on the front page or read that so-called article.â His deep voice was bordering on raspy, hinting at the other part of Bob.
You turned your head until it was leaning against his sturdy shoulder. Getting the confirmation when you saw his eyes flicker with a gilded promise. âOn a global scale?â
As tempting as the offer was, the mere mental reach of his should make you uneasy ⌠and how he didnât waste any time, knowing this was troubling you. Somehow it didnât. Not in this instance.
âAs fun as that would be, better not. Rain check maybe on the mind wipe?â
Sentry made a humming sound that made your nerve endings tingle with the intimacy of feeling his skin on yours. âBummer. Next time then.â
Hearing the familiar fizz in the air â it felt like touching a tube television â you shifted your head from his shoulder to see Ava phasing through the wall.
âSorry to barge in like this. Iâm visible this time around.â She lifted her arms in surrender. It didnât take her long to make the golden-eyed discovery. âDamn it. Just my luck, right?â Resigned to her fate, Ava placed her hands on her hips, twisting her lips into a sardonic smirk at herself.
âSomething we can help you with?â
You rolled your eyes at Sentryâs idea of fun. Standing up, you waved a hand in his direction. âDonât mind him. Heâs just fucking with you.â
He offered a small smirk at Ava. âShe said I couldnât do a mind wipe.â
With a mocking glare, you interrupted. âShouldnât. Donât put words in my mouth and then try to prove me wrong.â You spoke with a lower pitch to imitate the being in question. âYou said I couldnât do it.ââ
Sentryâs eyes were twinkling with molten delight. His focus was on you when he sent a smirk your way. âMisunderstanding then.â
You narrowed your eyes before turning back to Ava. âWhatâs up?â
Her gaze was switching between Sentry and you. However, she shook her head to get back to the reason of her visit. âI came to apologize.â
Coming from Ava, this was the most unfamiliar concept. Remaining quiet, your eyebrows rose.
âI know. I will deny it if the others find out though.â
âKeep going.â
âIâm sorry. If it wasnât for me, you guys wouldâve been here already and the press wouldnât have been after you.â
Being confronted by Avaâs guilty conscience, you sighed. âIâm not mad. It wouldnât have mattered anyway. They would have found something else to plaster on their news report in the long run. Even if Yelena and you tried to meddle before.â
Sentry crossed his arms, huffing to himself.
âWhat do you-?â All the fight left Avaâs defensive body. âIs it a consolation to know that I was against it? I only planned for you two to spend time together, go all domestic and shit while you were out shopping for snacks.â
Your lips curled. With a dry voice, you added, âThereâs a hidden romantic in you.â
The briefings with Valentina were turning into some sort of aggravating ritual. Whoâd have thought that something like the sound of her heels could unlock auditory memories?
She didnât bother with a proper greeting when she soundlessly clapped her hands at Bob and you. It felt slightly more threatening when her fingertips pointed in your direction with the motion, yet her eyes lit up like a shark. âMy congrats to the happy couple.â
Not having the strength to deal with this today, you wearily leaned back in your chair. âHow would they get such an idea?â
âWell, a picture is worth a thousand words.â She tilted her head conspiratorially.
Rolling her eyes, Yelena groaned. âCut the crap.â
âWe know it was you, Valentina,â Bucky added with the tired voice of someone who felt like his age.
A scandalized hand hovered over Valentinaâs chest when she mouthed with innocent eyes. âMoi?â She cocked her hip. âWhat have I ever done to you that you would think the worst of me?â
Ava pretended to retch, not willing to play this game.
âYou were the source, werenât you?â Bucky stayed persistent.
Valentinaâs eyes lit up, with a smirk implying her mischief. âI feel so touched that you thought of me. Maybe I did, maybe I didnât.â She shrugged. âIt did say âanonymousâ, right?â She eyed her watch, seemingly bored by this conversation already. âI hear thereâs a sensational news show covering this tonight, so there must be something true behind it.â
Walker frowned, wrinkling his nose at the description. âAre you talking about the Bugle show?â
âI knew you had some taste in regards to your education.â
Staring blankly ahead at the mention of the Daily Bugle educating people, he leaned towards Ava sitting next to him without uncrossing his arms. âI do feel sick now,â he muttered under his breath.
Avaâs stare remained unwavering towards their boss when she replied wryly, âSuck it up.â
âTrusted press sources told me this had been fed. This is just circumstantial. Says something when the Bulletin wonât even touch this.â Bucky shook his head at Valentina. âThis screams you.â
She tilted her head, smiling condescendingly. âThose were some big boy words. So proud.â
With a groan, Yelena threw her head back in frustration. âJust stop. What is really the endgame here?â
âIâm so glad you asked.â
âOh my God.â You absolutely hated that you had to be present for this monologue.
âWelcome to the first phase of Earthâs protection.â
Alexeiâs body language perked up. âDid you prepare presentation?â
âNo, now shush,â she hissed. âLet me paint you a picture.â
The severity in Valentinaâs eyes unnerved you, exposing how utterly serious she took this when she spread her palms. âJust imagine, Sentry on this team? The best promo for city-wide or even global deterrence. Now to have a god and a mutant on a cosmic level as a power couple? Thatâs some scary shit. Weâre talking intergalactic ramifications. Not to mention if those two ever broke up?â
Valentina pressed her palms together in a prayer. âI can see the sales figures already.â She shuddered with delight.
The marketing strategy should have shocked you, and yet it didnât, coming from someone like her. âYouâre painting a make-believe scenario. Weâre not a brand you can just use like chess figures.â
She pointed her finger as a threat. âYouâre not a brand yet. Sentropy does have a nice ring to it.â She twirled her finger in the air. âThis world needs heroes.â
âWhich we already are.â Yelena interrupted.
âBy being a united front.â This time, her glare focused on Bucky. âI heard there was a falling out with your best bud. What? You couldnât kiss and make up yet?â
Bucky rumbled low in his throat. âDonât mention Sam. These are people youâre dealing with.â
She sighed. âYou guys still think youâre the ones in control, huh?â She chuckled at the absurdity. âDonât you realize how easy your lives would be if you stopped fighting me and just ⌠do as I say?â
âWhatâs the next phase? Turning this team into a reality show?â
Without moving his chin from his sternum towards the blonde assassin, Walker mumbled, âDonât put ideas in her head.â
Valentina stared into the distance. âWeâll put it on the list.â
âDamn it, Yelena,â Walker groaned.
Bucky grumbled, echoing the teamâs reluctance to be used like this.
There was only one being missing who had been silent until now. It was Sentry who arrived with glowing eyes when he rose up from his seat. âWhat makes you think weâll be a part of this? That weâre just letting you do this?â
âI told you once, Robert. You donât scare me.â Valentina replied jadedly.
You didnât bother to stand up. You merely emulated Sentryâs attitude when your eyeballs shimmered with golden heat when you spoke monotonously. âHereâs what is going to happen. Weâll release a press statement to the public. Tonight. Something along the lines of âBoth people value their privacy. If any news changes regarding their relationship, the citizens of New York are the first to find out.'â
âItâs adorable how you keep throwing the word people around. You stopped being people a long time ago. You two are entities.â
âWe belong to ourselves,â Sentry added.
A sharp laugh echoed from Valentina. âOh, do you now?â
You remained resolute. âPress release, Miss de Fontaine. Before Jameson can even think about putting his two cents in with his so-called journalistic integrity.â
âThis conversation isnât over. Youâll change your mind soon enough, Miss Lehnsherr.â Valentina waved a finger between the both of you at the power display. âYou two are so cute.â
Bending his head towards you, Sentry lamented with a detached voice. âShouldâve done the mind wipe when I had the chance.â
âDo you think itâs unfortunate,â Bob muttered quietly, âthat you go out for the first time in weeks and youâre already being hounded by the tabloids and a fake story?â
Your head was leaning against his shoulder while the two of you were sitting in your usual spot in the hangar. âI remember this other guy in the picture too.â
Bob chuckled. âO-oh yeah? Whatâs he like? M-maybe you could introduce us?â
âYouâd like him. Hates the crowds too. Keeps to himself.â
He smiled. âR-really? S-sounds like a great guy.â
âOh, he has no idea.â
âBesides, they donât know what to write about me. I mean, itâs different as the Sentry when they regale me with the greatest stories. But when Iâm just me, I barely even get recognized on the street since Iâm only the unassuming guy on the team.â
It was your turn to get into a contemplative mood. âThese people donât know who you are, not really. The only thing we can do is to take the good with the bad.â Almost on instinct, your hand wound around his until your fingers interlaced with his, seeking his comfort and warmth.
Bob exhaled shakily, stroking the back of your hand with his thumb.
âI mean, itâs not that hard to believe that the two of us could be in a secret relationship.â
Turning his gaze away, Bob tried to hide his blushing cheeks with a chuckle. âUh, m-maybe?â
You tilted her your head in a challenge. âAre you saying Iâm wrong?â
âIâm not saying that. Weâre just ⌠one of those people who-â Bob twisted his body, same with his answer. Seemingly at a loss for words on how to define your relationship.
âWho feel very secure in our friendship.â
âR-right, weâre the best in being friends.â He blinked. âI mean, nothing against Yelena.â
Matching his encouragement, you smiled lightheartedly. âBut Yelenaâs different.â
âShe is. The best I could ask for. Like a big sis or the best pal.â Bob waved his other hand in the air in agreement. âBut youâre different too. Youâre, uh, a-â He cleared his throat, chuckling awkwardly. âGreat pal too?â
âOh wow, Iâm just a great pal? Best bud until the end, right?â
He shook his head. âYou know what I mean.â And to make matters worse, he chose to bestow you with his puppy-eyed look.
âNo, I actually donât. Iâm not gonna make this easy for you this time around, Bob.â You spoke softly, nudging his shoulder.
âI donât want to mess this up.â He muttered quietly, like he was sharing a secret.
âYou wonât,â you whispered in return. âI wonât let you.â
âIâve l-liked you for a while. I still do.â
âI like you too, Bob.â
He took deep breaths, gathering courage to keep going. âMore than like you.â
âRight back at you, bud. Keep going.â
Bob grasped both of your hands.
âThereâs something I gotta ask you. Has been on my mind for some time now. I just didnât know how.â He huffed. âEspecially now. With the whole world watching.â
âAsk me then.â
âI didnât want things to go like this. This is so not how I imagined this. I wanted to take things slow.â
âHow much slower could you have gone?â You giggled, but sobered, worrying about stopping his flow. âSorry.â
The corners of his mouth hinted at a small smile. âTake my time. Without the pressure of everyone watching at least. Everyone in the Tower excluded.â
You nodded blankly at the thought. âYelena would throw a party.â
âSheâs more similar to her father than she wants to admit.â Bob shook his head. âAnyway, hereâs the thing.â He stared deep into your eyes, gaining strength for the following words. âW-would you do me the honor o-of going on a date with me? In-in the Tower, I mean?â
âTook you long enough, you dork.â
Getting into a bantering mood, Bobâs eyes widened. âHey, this is hard for me. I was actually r-really nervous. Still am.â
âI know.â You smiled softly.
Absentmindedly, he rubbed your hands. âYou havenât answered yet.â
âWhat do you think my answer is? I was this close to making the first step myself. Yes, of course. Iâll go out with you.â
âThank God.â Bob exhaled heavily.
deja vu - series masterlist
Summary: The New Avengers used to have an omega-level mutant on their team to keep their own sun god in check. But that was before an organization took her during a mission to experiment on her mutant genetics. What happens when Entropy wakes up in a compound sheâs not familiar with? And with people who seem to know her? And don't get her started on the guy with the soft blue eyes.
Warning: pre-established relationship, mention of mutant experimentation, amnesia trope, mention of alcohol, fluff
Author's note: You guys đł I didn't have the best week when I let one comment get to me, so this positive reaction is really resonating with me. Just love when people reblog this story. Like always, I don't know how to feel about this moodboard. The second part will slightly move away from the amnesia plot though đ Entropy doesn't define herself by missing memories.

Authorâs note: Just having some fun here. I donât feel secure in saying I know these characters, but Iâm still giving it my best shot. I hope I got Valentina right đ¤đź This is my first time writing for this whole ensemble, so be nice! I struggled between calling Entropy Lehnsherr, just Magnus or even Maximoff. đ Sheâs not Wandaâs sister though, since Wandaâs relation to Magneto was never established in the films. Try not to think too hard on the Sentry plot point đ

This was the worst day ever.
Yelena exhaled heavily through her mouth when she saw the slumped form of Bob standing in the infirmary, leaning against the glass panel which harbored their friend. It was the only thing keeping him upright. With heavy steps she walked towards him until she stood next to him. Bobâs jaw was taut with tension.
Yelenaâs gaze followed his. Wide-eyed, she felt stunned that Entropyâs binary form had taken over. Trying not to disrupt the quietly strained atmosphere, she quietly asked, âDid she wake up yet?â
Only during missions you gravitated towards your binary mode. When you went full-on primal. The sheer darkness of it covering your whole body and the suit, reminded her of the Void. There was a time when that fact used to unsettle her. Yet there was something about the ink of the universe taking over your skin, with the constellations pulsating and shifting. A golden glow shimmered on the edges of your body. It was oddly comforting.
The motion of Bob shaking his head pulled Yelena out of the depths of her mind. With his arms crossed and a watchful eye, he whispered, âNo. They couldnât examine her in her binary form. Not while her mutation is trying to protect her from any procedures. They suspect she might have some neurological ⌠issues judging by the mission report.â His body tensed, convulsing with restless energy. âMaybe I shouldâve-â
âItâs not your fault,â Yelena interjected before he could fully articulate that thought.
âWe were so close to getting it right. I just think that if-â
âNo what if. This was on all of us.â Stroking his shoulder, Yelena sighed. She remembered the times when Y/N would create cosmic dimensions for Bobâs god side to let loose. And consequently how close the two of you were to officially draw out the Sentry for missions without activating the Void. âWe were the reason she was taken in the first place.â
The moment Yelena joined the others in the common room, the weariness on Walkerâs face couldâve mirrored her own.
âHowâs Bob?â Walkerâs eyes softened. He couldnât quell the sympathy in his voice.
âFeeling guilty ⌠and sad.â
âOh, sad Bob makes the lights dim.â Her father remarked before his eyes met hers. âReminds me of you. Not the light-dimming part.â
She smiled with a wince. âYeah, I got it the first time,â she said, sighing.
âHowâs the better half?â Bucky copied Yelenaâs sitting position on the steps.
She stared at him meaningfully. âDonât let him hear you say that.â
Walker glanced back at them from the couch. âDoesnât he like hear everything?â As soon as he voiced his assumption, he shrugged. âI think heâd agree though.â
Yelena inhaled deeply to gain strength before shaking her head. âNo change yet.â
Alexei turned somber for a change. âTragic. Little star is always very strong, very protective. Like mutant Red Guardian. She deserves better than this.â
Ava, who had been silent until now, shook her head mechanically. âIs no one going to talk about what we saw when we entered that facility?â The tense silence didnât seem to bother her. âThere were children.â
âWe saved them, Ava,â Yelena whispered.
With a faraway glance, Ava grew quiet.
The familiar sound of heels coming closer felt like a bucket of ice-cold water dousing the team.
âWonderful, youâre all here.â Valentinaâs lighthearted voice caught everyoneâs attention when she entered. Her eyes shone with delight before something akin to disappointment emerged, letting the hand which held a mission brief drop at her side. âWhereâs our sun god?â
âWhere do you think?â Yelena asked with a dry tone, blinking slowly.
Their boss pursed her lips deep in thought before her eyes lit up again. âOh right, omega mutant. Forgot for a second. Good work on that.â
âGood work?â Ava hissed through gritted teeth.
After mockingly glancing at the ceiling, Valentina mused, âHuh, didnât know I acquired an echo when I bought this place. Thatâs weird.â
âIf that file of yours doesnât include the Essex Corporation, then we donât want to hear it,â Ava stated with deep contempt.
Valentina shook her head, smirking. âSo, this is what I get for granting you the opportunity to save your teammate?â
âOh yes, very generous of you,â Walker called out.
âWe saved a whole building of mutant childrenâand teenagers might I add?â Yelena reminded her. âThis must be the best PR stunt you could hope for. Iâd say we deserve a break.â
âI had to pull some serious strings based on mere allegations. The Essex Corporation is known for doing research to better the lives of all the people on this planet.â
Bucky barely lifted his head. âDid you seriously memorize their PR statement?â He asked with a monotonous voice.
Ava joined in. âResearch would indicate that people benefit from a procedure made possible by people who had the option to say no if they wanted to. Letâs call it what it is. Torture, mutant experimentation.â
Alexeiâs usually jovial demeanor had turned somber at the memory of the mission. âNone of them had shoes. No socks. Very cold building.â
Waving her arms at the ambush at play, Valentina seemed dumbfounded by this turn of events. âWhy do you care so much about them? Do I need to remind you that they were still mutants? Remember, mutants.â
Ava stalked forward. âChildren. Mutant children.â Before she could do any damage though, Walker held her back by the shoulders.
Valentinaâs eyes narrowed. Tilting her head in an arrogant manner, she mouthed to herself, âWow.â
The next words spoken were at a normal volume again. âI can see that all of you are a bit too close to this. How about we take a deep breath and choose our next words carefully? You know, between employer and employee?â She waved to herself, cocking her hip.
âOr we can just call Bob?â Yelena shrugged her shoulders, waving a hand. âSee what he thinks?â She snapped her fingers as if she just had an unexpected thought. âHow about we draw out the sun god? I bet that guy can be really reasonable.â She scrunched her nose while offering a cheeky smile.
Valentina glared, closing the mission brief with a sharp sound. âWe want to behave like children? Fine. Take a self care weekend. And stop with the glum faces when you step outside, Jesus!â
âHi, I heard my name?â Bobâs voice was a welcome distraction when he entered the room and slowly walked down the steps.
Valentina inhaled deeply. âHave a nice weekend, Robert.â She muttered through gritted teeth.
âThanks?â He replied with a confused voice.
You didnât expect your mind to feel so groggy when you woke up. You frowned when you twisted your head to study your surroundings. You nervously inspected the unfamiliar room you were in and gazed outside the window to feel in awe of the New York skyline. Feeling the tingling sensation from your mutant form, you tried to phase the binary physique down and clenched your eyes shut. A sigh of relief left you when your skin was no longer buzzing with energy. You yanked your wrists to reach for your face, and expecting resistance, surprise still filled you when your hands bumped against the metal railing of the hospital bed you were in.
Like a shock to the system, you felt stunned at the pain. âOuch, what the hell?â With your vision getting blurry, you swore you saw restraints around your wrists. But when you blinked again everything was normal again. A groan left your lips, feeling the golden glow cover your pupils and the whites of your eyeballs, radiating heat. As much as you pressed the heel of your hands against your closed eyelids, nothing seemed to work.
Through the walls you could hear nervous voices, accompanied by beeping machines going on the fritz. Looking through the glass of the observation room, you noticed doctors and scientists walk by with rushed steps while sending you concerned expressions.
âEntropy? Miss Lehnsherr?â The voice of the doctor speaking through the intercom made you shift your head towards the glass panel. He continued, âPlease calm down. We can help you. How about you unlock the door for us again?â
âIâm not-â you started, looking at your twisting fingers. âIâm-â What you hadnât realized was that you had been doing it, like an internal protective reflex. You looked up again, opening your mouth to speak. In the blink of an eye, a man with brown tousled hair stood next to him in a blurry motion. Almost like he had always been a fixture if you hadnât seen it happen in real time.
A stunned gasp left the doctorâs lips, taken aback by the sudden appearance. âOh Jesus-â
The new guy had a twitching smile on his face when he nervously waved through the window at you. It seemed like a reflex before he could stop the hand movement. He gestured towards the door knob.
You frowned. The doctor got out of the way while you unlocked the door with a quiver of your fingers.
He stepped inside. âI came as soon as I felt it.â After seeing the expression on your face, he elaborated, âThe energy in the walls felt kinda off.â
You smiled awkwardly at the familiarity in which he spoke with you. âWas there a disturbance in the force?â
He chuckled. âSomething like that.â Sitting down next to you on the bedside, he inquired softly, âHow are you feeling?â
Despite how familiar he acted in your company, you still felt hesitant and didnât know how to act around him. âWeird.â You nervously licked your lips. âOkay, hereâs the thing, I donât know how to ask thisâŚâ
âOkay.â
You cleared your throat before you took a chance.âWhere am I?â
His face froze and blinked. Rubbing the back of his neck, he chuckled nervously. âUh, whâwhat do you mean?â
There was a part of you that didnât want to hurt his feelings. Judging by how elated he was to see you awake, the two of you seemed to know each other. You just didnât want to take that away from him. âI donât remember ⌠what happened.â You spoke slowly.
With that confession you heard the utensils in the room clatter while reality shifted to make the tools twist upside down in a weightless manner, with cosmic energy enveloping them.
âHey, itâs okay.â By the touch of his hand, you slowly transformed reality back to normal. âYouâre safe here, I-I promise you.â He swallowed. âYou okay? Whatâs ⌠the last thing you remember?â
âWestchester?â
His eyes widened before he tilted his head. âOh wow, thatâs a long time.â He opened his mouth when another thought hit him. âOh, IâIâm Bob.â He waved a hand to his chest, smiling slightly.
With blinking eyes, your breath turned normal again. The heat in your eyes receded and you mirrored his disarming smile. âHi, Bob.â
Bobâs smile grew wider. âHi, Y/N.â
âAnd this isâŚ?â
âOh, right.â He looked through the window which overlooked the city. âWeâre in the Watchtower. Weâre part of the New Avengers.â
Your mouth twisted in confusion at the sound of the team name. âDid you just say âNewâ?â
âI mean, we used to call ourselves the Thunderbolts before but then we got upgraded, I guess.â
âThat name does sound familiar though.â
Bobâs face lit up. âReally?â
Your chest grew warm at the pure delight on his face. âFor some reason, I remember this loud voice screaming it? But in a very joyful way? Itâs very weird.â
âItâs coming back to you, donât worry.â
A timid glance lingered on you. âIf you think so. Sorry for freaking out like that.â
He chuckled with an airy quality. âItâs-itâs fine. You know, usually itâs the other way around. Itâs youâyou tend to be the one to calm me down.â
You tilted your head. There was something about Bobâs physiology that did feel one-of-a-kind. To be more specific, you detected a golden serum flowing through his veins. âIâm guessing thereâs more to you than meets the eye, huh?â
He blinked slowly, brushing his hair away. âOh, uh, Iâm-I donât know about that.â His inhaling breath lingered in his chest before he exhaled heavily again while speaking slowly. âIâm guessing I could say the same about you.â
You smiled unabashedly. âYouâre a smooth talker, arenât you, Bob?â
His cheeks reddened. There was a tremor in his voice when he chuckled. âNot really. Uh, okay. Listen.â Bobâs voice turned earnest. âMaybe you just need to get reacquainted in your room. See something familiar to jump-start your memory again.â
You nodded with a small smile. âOkay, Bob.â
Bobâs eyes wandered around the table at his friends, trying to find the right moment when to talk about this turn of events. It was certainly an anomaly that everyone was all quietly eating their lunch. After chaotic dinners and verbal banters taking place, Bob was certainly feeling nostalgic for their usual antics.
Alexeiâs booming voice filling the Watchtower. Ava and Walker exchanging said banter. And Bucky and Yelena sighing out loud.
He leaned forward with twitching hands and saw Yelena turn her head at his tics. Trying to gather courage, Bob cleared his throat before taking a gulp of water to dampen his parched throat.
Expectant faces waited for him to voice what was on his mind. âOh, uh, hereâs the thing, Entropy lost parts of her memory. The last thing she remembers is,â he coughed, trying to get everything out in the open and as quickly as possible, âthe Xavier School.â
A stunned Yelena blinked slowly. âWoah, talk about a heavy lunch.â
âIgnorance is bliss,â Ava replied.
Alexeiâs shoulders dropped. âPoor thing.â
âNow Entropy has one more thing in common with you, Bucky.â
Bucky faked a smile at Walker. âThatâs funny. I bet she loves the memory loss and experimentation part.â
Walker limply spread his arms. âJudging by what we saw when we entered the facility, is it such a surprise that Entropyâs mind disassociated from the events by concealing those traumatic memories?â
Ava slowly turned her head and frowned at the use of medical terms. âSince when did you get a PhD, Walker?â
âI did pick up some stuff in the Army, you know?â
Simultaneously, Ava and Yelena let out a deep groan. âHere we go.â
âIâm just saying, trauma hits people differently. Kid just needs to feel safe again.â
From deep within his chest, Alexei let out a holler and lifted his arms like a thought just hit him. âI have great idea!â
More startled by the vibration in the lamps than the sudden passionate sound, Yelena muttered under her breath, âOh Jesus.â
âLetâs celebrate little starâs return. You know, big party. Have cheer that sheâs still alive.â
Yelena pressed her lips together, feeling still uncertain.
âI-I donât-I donât know if Y/N is going to like the big party part. I mean, no matter what Entropy version exists, she hates making a fuss.â
Nodding in agreement, Bucky conceded, âShe is still getting used to this new reality.â
Alexeiâs jovial demeanor adjusted a bit before his voice attuned to a lower pitch. âThen medium party.â
Crossing his arms in thought, Walker tilted his head. Due to everyone still feeling hesitant between doing something nice for Entropy and not wanting to push her, he spoke up. âIt is what we would normally do if she hadnât lost part of her memory.â
Yelena turned her head until she was facing Bob. âHow did she react when she saw you?â
âAnxious, but somehow the same. I-I think I was familiar to her at times.â
âOf course she recognized the golden boy.â Walker lifted his hands in surrender when several heads turned. âIâm kidding, guys. Letâs be real, itâs not that of a surprise that she took to you, Bob. So, how we do we do this? Just send Bob in to not overwhelm the little cosmos?â
Bob nodded. âI could do that. See if sheâs up for it.â
The night sky felt truly magical, with semi-silence filling the atmosphere. There was something comforting about sitting in the hangar in the middle of the night. When a small breeze rustled through your hair, you wrapped the cardigan tighter around your body.
âFound your secret hiding spot.â
Bob was leaning against the doorway and rubbing his elbow through his sweater. âFor a second I thought you wouldnât come out of your room at all. Donât want the others to think Iâm rubbing off on you.â
âIt canât be that secret if you already found me. And I doubt thatâs even possible if I barely know anything about you.â At the ensuing silence you cleared your throat. You had enough of an inkling that you didnât want to hurt Bob. âIâm sorry. I tend to make jokes when Iâm feeling awkward. Which you probably know.â
âItâs okay,â he said softly before he sat down next to you. âMust be pretty scary.â
âKinda. At first.â You shrugged. âI think Iâm getting there.â Exhaling through your mouth, you stared up at the sky. âItâs so quiet up here.â
âI know.â He smiled softly and brushed a hand through his hair. âItâs one of the things we both loved. Everythingâs calm up here and nothing else exists.â
Silence had lingered for a few more seconds before you spoke up again. âI read the mission report.â There was a part of you that didnât want to disrupt the comfortable air.
Bobâs shoulders deflated. His eyes turned mournful when he looked at you. âHow are you feeling?â
With a rueful smile, you softly repeated the sentiment from before. âIâm getting there.â
âDid anything jump out?â
âThe interior images of the facility seemed familiar. It was strange though.â You tried to put into words what you were experiencing, as if the former version of you was an isolated character instead of two halves of an incomplete person. âThe labs still felt creepy in a way. Like Iâm supposed to remember something which is ingrained in my bones.â
You eyed the side of his face with cautious eyes. âCan I ask you something?â
He rubbed his hands on his thighs. âS-sure, I-I mean, of course.â
âHow did I get here?â
Bob chuckled. He gazed into the night sky before nervously eyeing you again. âUh, y-you didnât read your file?â
âI would if most of it wasnât redacted.â Bob joined in on your laughter. âI barely know anything than the names of the others from this team. So, tell me, why would the government need a mutant on this Avengers team?â
Bob opened his mouth, appearing conflicted with this shift in conversation.
âCome on.â You playfully bumped against his shoulder to make him less tense around you. âIâve got to start somewhere if thatâs what youâre worried about.â
He offered a small smirk in return. âI could be an unreliable narrator.â
âWell, I trust you, Bob.â
He instantly shook his head at your confession. âI donât know about that. I just-Iâm a work in progress when it comes to a healthy body and mind, but donât you think itâd be better if your mind remembered on its own?â
âThen give me the cliff notes version instead.â
It took Bob several seconds before he finally relented with a sigh. âIt was about six months ago when you were brought in. As a fail-safe ⌠for me.â
âFail-safe? Because of the golden-â You gestured vaguely his body before continuing, âsubstance inside your body?â
The corners of his mouth were twitching into a soft smile. His body language felt even lighter in a way when he murmured, âYou know, as the daughter of the master of magnetism, you really know how to keep surprising me.â
Even if you tended not to spread the word that you were related to one of most notorious mutants out there, it still filled you with pride at being considered an equal to the Lehnsherr name at least. You smiled. âReally rolls off the tongue, doesnât it? And you need to stop distracting me.â You repeated the playful nudge against his shoulder, getting the sensation that this had been something you used to do. Like touching him was second nature to you. âKeep going.â
His blue eyes roamed over your face before he chuckled lightheartedly. âLong story short, even if you were assigned as a babysitter in a way, you tried to help me as best as you could. We sparred together, a lot of mental training to calm the anxiety. We were close to a breakthrough before ⌠your mission.â
You took in all that new information which completed the picture you already had of this soft-spoken Bob. âThank you for telling me.â
He nodded. âAnytime. You could talk to the rest of the team if you want. Maybe that could help.â
You figured it was only a matter of time until you would have to face them. Even if that suggestion made you anxious, you were still excited by the idea.
âSpeaking of, the others want to throw you a party. It was Alexeiâs idea. The others were mildly inconvenienced by it but I think they really wanted to spend time again.â
âWe used to do that, didnât we?â
His smile made his eyes light up. âYouâve been missed at several movie marathons. Just dinner and a movie probably.â
âI donât need to dress up, do I?â
Bob chuckled, shaking his head. âNo, just bring yourself. And some patience. Just so you know, we tend to stick among ourselves and the others forget what itâs like to have, uh, some manners?â
âI grew up with the Wolverine. I think Iâm fine.â
Despite your affirming words, Bob still tried to make sure. âSo, youâll come?â From his cross-legged position he started to face towards you.
Chuckling, you felt affected by his open expression. âYes, Iâll come, Bob.â
Huffing nervously, he replied, âThatâs cool. I can pick you up?â he asked, more as a suggestion.
âSure.â
âCool,â he breathed and gingerly got into a standing position to walk back inside. âI forgot to mention just now,â Once you turned back around to look back at him, he continued, âWe were friends. Before everything went sideways.â Bob rubbed the back of his neck. âReally good friends.â
You spoke softly. âWe still are, Bob. I definitely feel like I know you. I do believe that you canât really forget a feeling.â
âLittle star! We threw you party!â Bob and you were confronted by Alexeiâs exuberant voice when the two of you entered the common room.
For a few seconds you stopped in your tracks by the unexpected greeting. The decorations were hard to miss. A few paper streamers laid on the kitchen counter and a banner with the handwritten words âwelcome homeâ were hanging in the air, with balloons tied up at the ends.
âYes, I can see that.â
âBelieve it or not, but this is my dad being reined in,â Yelena whispered conspiratorially, but with a distinct volume for the others to hear.
You smiled. There was something familiar about them. It was like bopping your head to a song you didnât know the lyrics of.
âItâs fine, really.â
Soon enough awkwardness set in, giving off the feeling that the others were waiting for something to happen and you were inch by inch failing their test.
Alexeiâs eyes softened. He stepped forward with open arms. âOh, come here, malenâkiy.â He spoke with a murmur. Oddly, his visible warmth felt truly comforting. âLittle lion cub doesnât know how to ask for hug from family.â
âOh.â At first you felt uncertain by the hug before your body relaxed and you softly patted his broad shoulders. You spoke your thoughts out loud while muttering, âThis is actually really nice.â When you alluded to the tight hug he was giving you, it still made you feel appreciative to have your sentiments confirmed that Alexei would give the best hugs.
Yelena grunted. âUgh, fine,â she said as the only warning before you felt her front snuggle up to your back with a sigh. âGuys, just do it. Surrender to the group hug.â
The only verbal affirmation Bucky gave was a grumbling noise.
âFine. Youâre lucky I like you, kid,â Walker conceded when stepping forward.
âJesus. He means we like you,â Ava murmured under her breath.
âDonât turn a group hug into a competition,â he retorted.
It was a small relief that Bob didnât grumble much at the idea of a group hug when he joined you from behind. In return you patted something that felt like his shoulder before you settled on his neck. He was surprisingly taller than you expected, you realized from the unexpected and cozy warmth. You could feel Bob exhaling at the top of your head.
âOh, donât I feel special?â You lingered a few seconds before you had pity with them. âOkay, and now I release you from this hell.â
Ava exhaled, while she and the others slowly let go. âOh, thank God.â
âThat was good group exercise.â Alexei was positively beaming.
âHey, not to pat ourselves on the back, but I think weâre getting better at those,â Walker replied with pride in his voice.
Looking at him, you spoke up. âSo, youâre like Captain America, huh?â
With a crooked smile on his face, his shoulders sagged with relief. âThanks, kid,â he spoke softly. âU.S. Agent,â he introduced himself. At seeing the glances of the others, he added, âI mean, Walker. John Walker.â
âI went on social media, hoping it would spark something,â you elaborated.
âWould you look at that? Kid recognized me.â
Ava rolled her eyes. âShe recognized your Captain America-ness!â
In return, his mouth twisted into a mocking grimace. âNope, the only thing I heard you say was âCaptain Americaâs assâ. Guess itâs the accent.â
She shook her head before speaking to you in a quieter tone. âKudos, you recognized him without his taco shield.â
Trying to get back to the initial reason for the get-together, Yelena interjected, âLetâs just have dinner before it gets cold.â
With everyone taking their seats at the dinner table, Bob found his place at your side. You felt him glance barely at you before he placed a carton of sweet and sour chicken in front of you.
âOh, thanks. Thatâs,â you said. After seeing the soft expression on his face, you left it unspoken that this was your favorite Chinese food and instead changed your mind to utter something else, âreally sweet of you.â
You furrowed your brow at seeing Walker send Ava a significant look over his meal before your eyes caught his chosen dinner. âDidnât think youâd eat what normal people eat.â
He opened his mouth to retort before he heard the others bursting with laughter. It didnât take him long to chuckle with them, accepting that it was meant in jest. âGotta hand it to you, kid. You really know how to swoop in for the kill, huh?â
âDonât be fooled, thatâs the healthiest meal he couldâve picked,â Bucky threw in.
âI do know what to put in my body instead of these animals.â Walker waved at the others at the table.
With her mouth half-full, Ava couldnât resist. âWalkerâs taking baby steps. We have to remind him that even though heâs a super soldier, heâs still a human being and canât just torture his body with protein powder and veggies.â Her gaze caught his. âEating Korean BBQ every once in a while isnât a bad thing, you know?â
He tilted his head, teasing her right back. âYou know, thatâs the nicest thing you ever said to me.â
Ava rolled her eyes. âAnd that quotaâs already filled.â
âLittle star, howâs your brain?â
Feeling curious pairs of eyes settle on you, you cleared your throat before you found yourself staring at Bob at you side whose eyes had softened. âBob has probably told you about the memory thing. I read the mission report. I scoured through the many PR events on social media.â
Other than several eye rolls or sighs, Alexei seemed to be the only one who didnât mind the renown from the side effect of fame, with the way his chest swelled with pride. âHoping it would jog my memory, you know?â
âDid something come back?â Bucky inquired.
âOnce. But I thought at the time it was just a hallucination. Then I saw the images in the mission report. I was strapped down on a gurney.â
Yelena nodded, clenching her jaw. âItâs how we found you.â
âTo be honest, I get more sensations like Iâve been somewhere before. Or feelings of familiarity.â
Ava chewed on something crunchy. âLike Bob?â There was a certain undertone in her voice that made you nervous.
âI mean, itâs not that surprising-â Bob started.
At the same time, you spoke up. âBob does seem familiar-â
You chuckled with Bob, although coming from him it sounded more awkward. In the end, he cleared his throat before he observed the others quietly from under his eyelashes.
âThatâs cool. You feeling comfortable?â Yelena appeared amused before she continued at seeing you nod. âFeeling safe with him?â
Now you felt uneasy by these sorts of questions turning into an interrogation. âSure.â You spoke slowly. The energy among the team felt a bit strange, but somehow not in a bad way, more like in a mischievous manner.
Yelenaâs eyes were sparkling with something unsaid. âGood.â
âSpeaking of Bob, he did make me think of something. I was wondering if you could help me with the memory thing by talking about me? I know it sounds really weird, but would it be alright if you told me how it was like when we first met?â
âI donât think itâs weird.â Yelena looked to the others for support.
âAgreed,â Ava added.
Alexei stretched out his arms and echoed with his loud voice. âI would love to talk about little star.â
Leaning forward, Walker patted his thighs. âSure. Letâs have a trip down memory lane.â
âIâm in.â Bucky lifted his bottle of beer in the air as a cheers and turned to his teammates. âWho starts?â
âNot me. You guys met her first.â Ava pointed at Walker and Bucky. âThough you might want to whitewash the events, Walker.â She smirked.
He mockingly smirked at Ava. Walker turned his body until he was facing you and opened his mouth-
âWell, you were pretty scary,â Bucky began.
Walker huffed at the interruption before he a grimace darkened his face. âShe wasnât that terrifying.â
âWere we in the same room, John?â He studied you intensely. âSo, hereâs what happenedâŚâ
âDid they send you?â You inquired.
âIf you mean the government, then yes,â Walker answered. He studied the bodies scattered around while lights flickered haphazardly in the lab. âYou made kind of a mess, didnât you?â
Bucky spoke up. âListen here, weâre here to take you in. So, why donât you just come with us before more people get hurt?â
Tilting your head, you observed his arm. âIs that vibranium?â
Slowly, his breathing turned heavy when the metal started to move without his control. âWalker, use the collar.â
Walker hesitated. âBucky?â
âWalker, collar, now!â
The last warning you gave was when you muttered ominously, âIâm not switching one facility for another.â
âWe could really use some backup right now! Ghost, get in here.â
Ava heard Walkerâs choked voice through the comm channel. Uttering a small sigh, she phased through the facility, merely to watch Walker get thrown against the wall with your psionic powers. Too stunned, she whispered, âJesus, guys.â
Hearing him mutter with irritation to the ground, âWe could really use a Bob right now.â
Avaâs upper body was shaking with laughter and was soon joined by Yelena mirthful chuckles.
âAww, Walker, thatâs actually really nice of you,â Bob replied with a satisfied smile.
âSure, Bob.â His soft smile turned into a smirk when he looked at Bucky. âThanks for that, bud.â
With no care in the world, Bucky shrugged. âThereâs no shame in admitting she kicked your ass.â
Walker stared imploringly at you. âDonât listen to him. You kicked all of our asses.â
âIs this Flatter Y/N day? Because a girl could really get used to this.â
âYou should. Truth be told, due to Valâs oh-so transparent agenda at the time we didnât know you were like an omega level threat. So, that was fun.â Sarcastically, Walker did a thumbs up with both his hands. âAnything else you want to know?â
You pursed your lips while you tried to think of something good. âWhy is your shield bent into a taco? Special choice of weapon?â
A grunt left his lips. Without missing a beat, he mumbled into his food. âWhy donât you ask your boyfriend?â
âWhat?â
âWhat?â Walkerâs eyes widened in shock.
Bob rubbed the back of his neck and coughed loudly. âSo, uh, when are we watching that movie?â
After Yelena punched into Walkerâs side, he held his ribs, mouthing, âI didnât mean to.â
The warm intimacy was slowly getting to you. Bobâs vulnerable and accommodating nature was a breath of fresh air and the reason why it was getting to hard to breathe while he was sitting next to you and shared the blanket with you to cover both of your laps. Needing a moment to gather your wits and cool down your skin. The moment when you tried to quietly untangle from the warmth, you felt his wide-eyed stare linger on you.
âE-everything okay?â
âYeah, just having a drink,â you whispered. âYou want some?â
âI-Iâm good.â
After moving towards the open kitchen, you poured yourself some water before downing it in one go.
âWell, that was painful,â you heard Yelenaâs dry voice utter close by.
Stuttering, you felt the water droplets on your lips when you pressed them together. âWhat do you mean?â You saw Yelena leaning against the counter while she was tapping her fingers against the surface.
You briefly saw Ava phasing through the couch and counter until she was standing right next to you.
âNo phasing during movie night,â Bucky muttered absentmindedly.
âOkay, dad,â she called out without moving her gaze away from you. Pulling back her mask to reveal her face, Ava prepared another bowl of popcorn. âSo, what are we talking about?â
Heat blossomed in your cheeks at the ambush coming from both sides. âNothing. Thereâs no talk happening.â
Without waiting for further explanations from you, Ava silently turned her head towards Yelena and crossed her arms, witnessing Yelenaâs mouth tug into a mischievous smile before she went on.
âWhat happened on the couch? Very awkward.â
You sighed before you surrendered to the inevitable with a whisper. âI feel like I did that before. It just ⌠it scared the shit out of me.â
âThe cuddling under the blanket?â Yelenaâs eyes studied your face with meticulous detail. âYes, you guys do that all the time.â
âItâs truly nauseating.â After seeing your reactions, Ava corrected herself with a shudder. âFine. I hate how adorable you two are.â
Almost like a knee-jerk reaction, you looked in Bobâs direction. You felt a shiver travel down your spine from his gaze before his head jerked back.
âIâm just ⌠What if I donât get those memories back? That is a possibility.â
Yelenaâs shoulders dropped. âYou canât think like that.â
âStop putting pressure on yourself. We wouldnât mind those remember when conversations.â
âSheâs right,â Yelena confirmed.
âI guess what Iâm trying to say is Iâm just letting it come to me when it does. Even if that means âstarting freshâ.â
Yelena smiled devilishly. âWow, Bob wants to cuddle on the couch and you want to get to know the guy all over again,â she said while making air quotes. âAnd start fresh.â
You felt so close to exhaling in aggravation. âYelena.â
The blonde Widow raised her arms in defeat. âFine, whatever.â She leaned forward on her arms. âSo, you think heâs cute, huh?â
âOh my God,â you hissed.
Bob made a choking noise that evolved into a coughing fit. âI-Iâm good, guys,â he assured them when several heads turned in the sitting area.
Walkerâs eyes were glued back to the screen when he exclaimed, âWhat kind of whisper conspiracy is going on over there? I can feel Bob getting nervous and itâs distracting from the movie.â
âCalm your tits, Walker!â Ava mirrored Walkerâs volume before her voice turned into a whisper again. âYou do realize dear Bob can essentially hear the heartbeat of a hummingbird in Central Park, if you know what Iâm sayingâŚâ She arched an eyebrow before her hand reached for the popcorn to get back to movie night.
Your body felt frozen in place once you managed to process this insight.
Yelenaâs lips were twitching. âYou canât blame me. Iâll initiate any sorts of drama in this tower. What can I say? I like Bob. We like Bob.â
There was only thought rushing through your brain with how the night had evolved.
Two words to be exact.
Fuck me.

Hi Anastasia! Sorry if I'm two years late for seeing this. Thank you so much for the fic rec and sharing your favourites!
be nice?
Wow, it's been a long time since someone actually insulted one of my fics.
Do writers really need to mention to readers when they're writing a character they've never written for before - or even in the tvd fandom which they started out in - not to criticize it? I always thought it was kind of a given for readers to be nice in the comment section. But, I guess, that's the optimist in me. đ¤ˇđťââď¸
In other good news, I'm queuing a Bob Reynolds fic coming on October 1st (a character I've never written for and an ensemble I'm not that familiar with, other than a few exceptions). The summary can be read in the masterlist. So, be nice? đđź
am i the asshole? ~ (part two)
Summary: Post-merge ~ Does a Siphoner have a teensy little crush on a witch? Funny how feelings work.
Warnings: mention of alcohol, language, a smidge of angst
Word count: 1.6k
Pairing: Kai Parker x witch!reader
Authorâs note: After the merge Kai was still a siphoner, right?đ I hope I got post-merge!Kai kinda right at least. Finding the balance for a (sorta) nice sociopath is not the easiest.

âWhat do you want?â
âNow thatâs not very nice of you. What would the neighbors think?â
You sighed at Damonâs familiar antics. Absentmindedly tapping against the kitchen counter, you waited for the coffee pot to finish brewing. At last, your gaze switched over to the call you put on speaker. âThat the Salvatores probably did their usual shtick to warrant that behavior?â
Damon groaned incredulously. âWeâre still on that? Itâs been a week!â
âIâm going to tell you the following: do you really want to test me before my first cup of coffee?â
âWait, this is serious-â
Without bothering to glance down, you hung up. Closing your eyes, you sighed in relief when the light at the bottom of the coffee machine blinked once.
~Damon POV~
He let out a grunt at hearing the sound of you ending the phone call. Just another thing that wouldnât go according to plan. Damon clenched his fist.
âSo, what did she say?â
He turned around and narrowed his eyes at the personified plague that was starting to ruin his day. With a sarcastic tone he replied, âI donât know. Did that sound like a successful conversation to you?â
Kai sauntered closer. âCounter question: You want to get that message to Bonnie, right? So, Iâm game if you are. But you have to make a bit of an effort here.â He waved his hands at Damonâs idleness, pouting dramatically. âI mean, come on. Itâs like you donât even want dear Bon back.â
Damon frowned. âIf you need Y/N so badly for this ritual why donât you call her?â To illustrate the tempting offer, he waved his phone.
âOut of the two of us who would she rather talk to?â
Skepticism lingered on his features. âIâm not buying it. Do you want to siphon her or something?â
âMaybe I just really want to prove to her how sorry I am for what transpired.â
Damon paused. âYou mean when you depleted her like a juice box just for the kicks of it?â
Widening his eyes, Kai pointed at him. âExactly! I mean, I kinda feel bad about it. Speaking of, I could use the extra juice. Empath energy must be really rejuvenating.â
He groaned at his witch friend being described like that. âYes, youâre so repentant, gross. Correct me if Iâm wrong. There are less than a handful of witches in town or close by who could do this spell.â Tilting his head, he continued his train of thought. âAnd they all want to kill you or at the very least would love an invitation to your funeral. There comes a time when you have to realize ⌠maybe you are the problem.â
Kai clutched his chest, sucking in a breath. âYou know, if I didnât know any better Iâd say you were trying to hurt my feelings. Oh, and, would you look at thatâŚâ
Damon rolled his eyes when he pointed at himself as he was forced to hear him drone on and on.
âMega powerful Gemini coven leader.â
Damon faked a smile when Kai pointed at him in return. âBoring little vampire. Do as I say. Call Y/N again. Try to think of Bonnie if that helps.â
âAntichrist,â he grumbled before shaking his head. Reluctantly, he redialed. âHey, itâs me again.â
You sighed heavily into your phone, not knowing what to make of Damonâs stubbornness. âWow, you must be really desperate.â
He snorted. âYou have no idea.â
âCareful, Damon. Are you sure you want to reveal all your cards already?â
His voice took on a pleading quality. âListen, we need you. I wouldnât call if this wasnât important-â
You furrowed your brows at the slip. âWhoâs we?â
âUh, figure of speech?â
You didnât trust the heavy silence before that answer. âDamon.â
âA chatty little siphoner?â Your gaze wandered into the distance, remaining silent. âYou didnât hang up yet.â
With your lips pursing, you replied slowly and monotonously, âIâm trying to decide if I would be able to give someone an aneurysm over the phone.â
âItâs Bonnie,â Damon offered, knowing that was answer enough. âMaybe you can pop the blood vessels of the devil incarnate when you get here?â
With his arms crossed, Damon waited patientlyâmore or lessâfor your verdict. His fingers tapped on the coffee table between you as he absentmindedly drank from his tumbler.
Your brows were furrowed in thought while you were perusing the spell from the grimoire. It took a few more seconds before you lifted your head again to face the two men in question. âWhich one of you said I needed to be here for this? Because I donât.â
Kaiâthe ever so innocentâchose to study the ceiling, with his hands behind his back. Instead of offering an immediate explanation, he pretended to exude a surprised face when he turned to you, to find you already examining his features. âIâll have you know this is a very sophisticated spell.â
You barely managed to let out the scoff before it could leave your mouth. âOne you donât need a second witch for since ⌠what were your words? Youâre mega powerful?â
The corners of his mouth twitched. âStop it, Iâm not used to you regaling me with compliments. What can I say? I could use the extra empath juice.â
Breathing deeply at being labeled an empath juice box, you turned your body until you faced him head-on. Imagining all the things you could do to him without seriously killing him. Damn him for becoming coven leader. Who could blame you though if your fingertips were already tingling with something akin to lightning, needing some sort of release?
Judging by the pleased expression on Kaiâs face, he could feel it too. Maybe even relished in it.
Feeling the energy shift to something more volatile, Damon spoke up, âRemember, please donât kill him. I know the urge is strong.â
You rubbed your finger together once the energy of the celestial event hit you. These were less than ideal conditions for this to work, you realized with a sigh. Glancing back at the siphoner, you almost stepped back once you noticed he was already looking at you, eyeing those micro-expressions and physical behavior of yours.
Sensing the air of the crescent moon, you turned back to Damon. âIâm going to raid your whiskey collection for this.â
Your shoulders tensed when you heard footsteps following behind you. You thought it was strange that Damon barely sighed at your declaration, but you were proven wrong. It felt even more bizarre being silently watched by Kai while you indulged in some intoxication to put you in the right headspace.
At last you chose to face the music by turning around while arching your eyebrows with an expectant gaze.
It surprised you how his expression seemed almost stunned. It took him a few seconds before he could voice what was on his mind. âThese people have no idea how your powers work.â
You crossed your arms, there must be something seriously wrong in the universe if Kai Parker wanted to fight in your corner. âAnd you do?â
He scoffed in derision. Despite a successful merge it was slightly reassuring to know that some things wouldnât ever change a power hungry witch. âMore than your so-called friends. You think-â He pointed to the living room where Damon was still waiting for you to get ready, âthey can keep you safe when it comes down to it?â
âWhy do you care?â
Kai swallowed before his familiar smirk made an appearance, but this one seemed more strained than usual. ââŚWhat?â
âThe last time we met you couldnât wait to drain me.â
He blinked. With an awkward chuckle, he sputtered, âIâd never drain you.â
âAnd now Iâm supposed to believe youâre this innocent guy who never did anything wrongâslate wiped clean? Guess weâre cool, hm?â Your body sidestepped the corner of the kitchen island until you stood in front of Kai. The magic in your blood was singing to draw even closer to the siphoner. First the siphoning and now this? There was something seriously off about your magic. It was a bit unsettling that it craved these masochistic tendencies. âI mean, what do you want from me?â
Okay, the intimate proximity was a bad idea. Kaiâs energy was thrumming, daring you to come closer. âI just ⌠I never met someone like you.â
âThis isnât one of those moments where you claim that weâre so similar. All you see is the power. My existence is all about balance while you only thrive in chaos.â
Kaiâs face relaxed in recognition, like he was almost pleased that you could read him like that. His voice turned soft. âSo, you do know me.â
âDo you even know how many elemental empaths are out there? Just connect to earth and youâre ready to go. Celestials? As far as I know we might as well all be dead. So, if you want to kill me, youâd better have a damn good reason.â
Kai frowned. âWhy would I want to kill you?â
âYou tried several times,â you uttered through a clenched jaw.
âIf I wanted you dead, youâd be dead,â he hissed lowly. His gaze sobered quickly, blinking slowly once he read the expression on your face. âWait, thatâs not what I meant.â
You exhaled. âLetâs get this over with.â The satisfaction filling you up felt like vindication in nature when you shoved your drink against his chest before you walked back to where the ritual was supposed to take place.
Damon leaned with his hip against the couch, arching a dismissive brow. âYou lovebirds dealt with your issues?â
You opened your mouth to interject when Kai spoke up. âNo issues.â
Your narrowed eyes didnât seem to bother him when he lifted his hand with the palm pointed downwards. âI donât know about you, but Iâm a big advocate for holding hands.â
You merely rolled your eyes at his shenanigans.

Warnings: violence, language, sexual tension, siphoning
Word count: 2.3k
Pairing: Kai Parker x witch!reader
Authorâs note: So, hereâs the thing ⌠I have no idea if Iâm going to finish the Ben Hargreeves fic, so in the meantime I want to rejuvenate the thinking juices with this murderous sociopath. đ¤ˇđťââď¸ Fair warning, itâs been many months since I watched the show, so Iâm going to make the plot a bit loosey-goosey and do a few changes, with this to make some sense. Don't look at me with plot and logic. đ
This reader has a few restrictions, so sheâs not overpowered. I thought it could be fun to someone with that kind of power set around a sociopath who doesnât know how to deal with feelings. đ Regarding her powers, imagine Phoebe from Charmed who just has an empathy ability.

âWhereâs Elena?â
From afar, you could hear Damonâs voice before a male one retorted sarcastically, âOh, are we not cloaking people anymore? I thought thatâs what this was.â The mystery guest whistled.
You frowned at hearing a struggle taking place in the abandoned high school. Silently, you sneaked along the lockers, trying to get closer.
âThatâs gotta hurt. I am definitely getting the hang of this. Cloaking spells, illusions. You know, itâs all the same wheelhouse.â
You heard a heavy thunk against reverberating metal. To stop anything even worse from happening you rounded the corner to watch Damon crawl over to Elena who was crumpled on the floor.
âWhatâs going on here?â You said, walking around the corner.
At last you could put a face to the male voice confronting Damon. Judging by the facial similarities to Jo, you suspected this to be the new bane of Damonâs existence called Kai. You furrowed your brows at seeing him wear a gray Mystic Falls shirt.
He turned his body until his eyes zeroed in on you. With a tilt of his head, he asked, âOh, what do we have here?â
Glowering at the deflection, you twisted your fingers at your side.
Ignoring the bloody mayhem he left behind, Kai pointed behind him as he sauntered closer. âOh, them? Donât mind them. Weâre just having a bit of fun.â He smirked.
âWhat Iâm curious about is your-â His voice deepened until it fell silent. Kai stopped in his tracks. âWoah-â His fingers reached for his nose until droplets of blood touched his fingertips.
Shivers went down your spine at the intense stare shooting in your direction.
His voice turned raspy. âWould you look at that?â With a smirk, he lifted his arm. âMotus.â
A grunt left your lips at feeling yourself being dragged forward by the feet. You swung your arms around until a golden energy wave ruptured through the air. With the back of his head, he elevated against the ceiling before he fell down.
Kaiâs groan turned into delighted chuckles. Your fingers tensed at having to go another round. Gray eyes lazily met your figure with a humming sound.
âStay down.â Your arm rose to send another aneurysm his way, letting a golden shimmer linger around your hand in warning.
If it was possible his eyes glinted even more with mischief. Kai shook his head. âBut this is so much more fun.â
An arrow shot through his shoulder, making him fall to his knees before Alaric ran over to inject him with something.
âI couldnât agree more.â
Those were the last words he heard before his mind drifted off.
You absolutely hated how you were the go-to girl for everything. Including fulfilling the duties of a babysitter.
âTrust me, this guy is harmless like this.â Damon laid his hands on your arms. âBy now, heâs probably as dangerous as a baby. A siphoner baby, but still. So, no touchy.â Wagging a finger in reprimand, he pouted his lips at the sacrifice you were offering for not touching a siphoning serial killer.
You were still not convinced when you rolled your eyes. âOh no, what will I do with myself? Sounds like a fun time: watch the catatonic witch? Check.â
âTry not to kill him? I know itâs hard.â
You smiled serenely at the thought. âDonât tempt me.â
âBesides, the last time you two crazy kids met, he was already half obsessed with you.â
With a dry voice, you retorted, âThanks. That does make me feel better.â
âIt wonât take long. If it bothers you that much, just-â Damon wiggled his fingers to imitate your powers. âhit him with your sleepy powers.â
You laughed mockingly before you instantly sobered. âIf you take one second longer, Iâm going to make him obsessed with you instead. And I wonât even have to touch him.â
Realizing you meant business, he suppressed an unsettled shiver. âJesus, fine. I wonât take long.â
You threw your head back, exhaling heavily. You eyed Tylerâs knocked-out body lying on the ground next to Kaiâs bedside. âWell, that worked out perfectly.â
With a sigh, you dialed Damonâs number, muttering under your breath, âWhat a shit show.â
âIâm already on my way back. Loosen those empath fingers already. Donât tell me you already tried to kill him.â
âNot exactly. But Tyler tried ⌠something.â
Silence lingered on the other end. âWhat happened?â
âTried to put him off his Pentobarbital. The Gemini dadâs in town. Tyler wanted to grab him as a plan B, in case heâd say no to the blonde twins. I thought Iâd let you deal with this unconscious problem. The less murderous version at least.â
Even after reiterating everything that happened, it still felt strange that this was your life now.
Damon exhaled a tired groan. âWhat is it with Romeo thinking he can just take the psycho freak magic siphon and just waltz out of there? Wait. HuhâŚâ
You closed your eyes, rubbing your forehead. âOh no, I donât like when you get ideas.â
âY/N, pull a Romeo. Wake him up. Keep him alive until I get there.â
Still not convinced, warily eyeing the IV drip and the sleeping siphoner. âYou know, thereâs still time to not do this.â
âThis is the only way. I know what Iâm doing.â
You sarcastically grumbled under your breath, âBoy, do you ever.â
Hanging up the phone, you succumbed to your fate when you leaned over to unplug the sedative. âIâm going to regret this.â
You intensely stared at Kaiâs sleeping form from the chair you were sitting on. Feeling impatience swelling inside you, your fingers lifted in the air, clenching them into a twisting motion. Your features grimaced in concentration until only warmth lingered. Satisfaction bloomed when Kaiâs chest hummed with golden energy.
Eyelids twitching, Kai groaned with a gasp, touching his chest.
âAbout time, sleeping beauty.â
Kai groggily opened his eyes before he searched for the source of the voice. âIs this real?â
You bit your lip, flicking your finger at him until the headache hit him full force.
The groan leaving Kaiâs lips was deliciously gratifying to your ears. âGod!â It was short-lived though when he chuckled, sending you a slow, speculative gaze. âYou really are an empath.â He stroked his chest where the golden energy had hit. His eyes lit up with a vigorous curiosity. âWhich kind?â
Kai shook his head when you remained silent instead. âKeep your secrets. Iâll find out soon enough.â
âNot if youâre dead.â
He pouted. âOuch, so hostile already. And we donât even know each other.â With a smirk stretching on his lips, he nestled himself deeper into the pillow and bestowed you with a smoldering gaze.
âIâm Kai. Whatâs your name, sunshine?â At the prolonged silence his gaze darkened when he narrowed his eyes. âYou know, I could just make you tell me.â He twisted his fingers, pointing towards you.
Eyeing his hand, you stood up from your seat. You crossed your arms. âNope, no more Traveler magic for you.â
Kaiâs eyes caught Tyler lying on the floor next to him. âYou shouldnât have. Should I feel touched that you were the one watching over me?â
âItâs usually Damon or Alaric staring daggers at you.â
âI hope not. I mean, Damonâs such an incessant talker. How can you stand the guy?â
Ever the dramatic one, Damon barged in. âI was just about to ask the same question.â He turned towards you, arching an eyebrow. âHow can you stand the guy?â
Kai groaned. âGreat.â He smirked mirthlessly. âI was just enjoying myself but then I heard this droning voice in my ear.â
Damon widened his eyes. âNews flash: itâs not me, itâs you.â
âOh my God, thereâs two.â You placed your fingers against your temple, feeling a headache coming on.
âWhat do you want? Iâve got places to see, a sister to merge.â
âThatâs going to have to wait for a bit.â
Kai sat up in bed. Mockingly, he laughed once. âYou really think Iâm gonna trust you?â
âNo. And weâre not gonna trust you. I just happen to need a magic siphon and youâre the only game in town.â
With a spring in his step, he jumped over Tyler until Kai was inches from Damon. âHi. Letâs discuss my fee.â
You felt Damonâs sidelong glance on the side of your face. âDonât look at me like that. I wouldnât do this if it wasnât life and death. Literally.â
You shook your head. âEverythingâs life and death in this town.â With a sigh, you continued, âIâm going to hold down the fort until Tyler wakes up. At least, until he can venture on being Livâs knight in shining armor.â
âYouâre a good egg, Y/N.â Damon patted the side of your head.
You grimaced, not knowing what to make of the amicable touch. âWhatever.â
Feeling Kaiâs inquisitive gaze upon you, you watched him in return. He was basically vibrating with delight, like he was close to jumping in the air.
âYou still havenât asked me what I want in return.â Kai tilted his head.
âWe donât have time for negotiations.â Damon grumbled next to you. âYou are in no position to-â
âAs I keep hearing ⌠time is a luxury you donât have. Iâm offering you my servicesâthe kind of which is quite rare if I recall correctlyâyou think Iâm providing those out of the goodness of my heart?â He chuckled darkly, tapping lightly against his chest where his heart laid. Supposedly.
âWe both know people like us arenât capable of that,â he added.
Damon clenched his jaw, stepping towards him with a threatening air. âLittle weasel-â
Kai tapped his ear. âUh uh uh, less insults, more groveling.â
âWhat do you want?â He hissed.
Kai stroked his jaw in thought. âIâm feeling quite peckish.â
Sensing the siphoning hunger inside Kai thrum with energy, you inwardly sighed at his antics.
âWhat?â
âHe wants a taste,â you elaborated.
Kai smirked. âThatâs not how I wouldâve phrased it, but if youâre offering.â He wiggled his eyebrows indecently. âIâll be honest, Iâve been curious. Never had an empath before. And Iâm not hungry for Vampire. Sorry, not sorry.â
Damon groaned, at last understanding Kaiâs insane tangents. âGotta be kidding me.â
âTimeâs a wastinâ. Looks like you got a choice to make.â
âA siphon leech who just lost all his Traveler magicâsounds like someone with a ton of self control to stop,â Damon interjected.
Kaiâs eyes settled on you. âDonât worry, I would know when to stop and trust me, I know all about self control.â
With a disgusted face, he rolled his eyes. âUgh, someone kill me.â Damon started to face you, turning serious. âYou know, I wouldnât ask this of you if this wasnât serious.â
You gave him a blank stare. âOh, Iâm sure Iâll find a way for you to make it up to me.â You narrowed your eyes, imagining the siphoning. âOr not.â Turning back towards Kai, you gingerly offered your arm.
Kai shook his arms like he was psyching himself up. âOh my, is that what nervous feels like? I must be pretty hungry, huh?â He let his hand linger in the air for a second before brusquely keeping your wrist in a tight grip.
A gasp left your lips. Not feeling used to the intimate touch after years of people avoiding it in fear of activating your empathy and have you read their innermost secrets. Instantly, the tingling sensation of your essence leaving your body remained.
He hissed through gritted teeth, watching in fascination at the glowing surface area on your skin. âOh, thatâs the stuff. Would you look at that? Who knew I needed empath power all my life?â
His face lit up even more at the struggle you were facing. âI bet youâre thinking-â His face leaned towards you until it was inches from yours, not moving his hypnotizing gaze away from yours. You could feel his warm breath on your cheeks. Kai pouted. âIf only he had some Traveler power left.â His grip tightened and if possible he siphoned even harder.
You clenched your hands into fists, grunting at the aching sensation.
His voice twisted into something spiteful. âMaybe you guys shouldnât have drained me like you did.â Kai observed your reaction with intent eyes, silently reading your expression.
âEasy on the control, Parker,â you could hear Damon say faintly behind you.
With a thunderous glare, you grunted, âLet go, Kai.â
âCome on, make me,â he said, baiting you to rise to the challenge.
Not wasting another second, you placed your hand around his throat. Not enough to choke him in return, merely as a threat that you werenât afraid to use force if necessary.
Kai, the pervert, closed his eyes and threw his head back to further reveal his neck. âOh, thatâs nice. Give me more of that.â
You pressed harder with more glowing energy.
âOkay, thatâs enough with the foreplay. Cut it out!â Damon kept the two of you apart, lightly shoving Kai away. He gazed into your eyes, holding onto your shoulders. âAre we good?â
You intensely stared at Kai, not daring to avoid his eye. âNo, weâre not. Not even close.â There must be something wrong with your magic. It swirled in your blood, humming with your heartbeat, like it needed more. To be close again, to feel more of that siphoning spark.
Kai stretched his arms over his head with new vigor. âDid it feel as good for you as it did for me?â With arching eyebrows, he mockingly frowned. âNo? Just me? Oh wellâŚâ
Damon exhaled heavily, clapping his hands. âChop chop. Do I look like I want to be bored by your endless yapping?â
Kai started to follow. His gray eyes were glinting. He never seemed to have heard of keeping his distance when he moved around you, walking backwards.
âUntil our next encounter, Y/N.â Kai smirked. âTold you Iâd find out,â he exhaled with a tranquil air, throwing his head back. âUh, I feel so refreshed.â
Damon pushed him towards the door for good measure, trying to hurry him up.
There was still no haste in his step. âThanks for that, my sweet little witch.â

am i the asshole? - series masterlist
Summary: Rivals-to-lovers. Kai meets his equal, not knowing how to deal with those pesky feelings (ugh). The question is: What's a guy gotta do to acquit himself in the eyes of a sweet little witch when he ... did some things while he was still a raging sociopath? (complete)
Warning: violence, language
Author's note: I swear this fic title had so many re-writes đ If my mind keeps calling it siphoning the sun i'm sorry. Not a fan of naming taylor swift song titles as fics đ Part one and two are officially done. I don't know if I'll do a part three since my mind is working on the outline of different series. My inspiration for Kai is only semi-there. Even if I said I won't let that one criticising reply get to me, I will always connect that with this mini-series. I'll see what happens in a few years, but officially this mini-series is complete.

umbrella readers...
isn't it ironic umbrella academy pulled me out of my writing hiatus with sparrow!ben? essentially, i tried so hard to keep going until i was no longer certain if/when (but a bigger if) i can finish the sequel series i set out to do for the empath and the eldritch horror.
i always feel so bad when i put out there how i'm working on something and then i don't deliver. especially since i worked on this for almost a year.
full disclosure, it's a fix-it story with 10 parts, with only one chapter finished so far đ so, at the moment it's another abandoned wip đ¤ˇđťââď¸
currently trying my hand in a whole different fandom instead. đ¤Ş
the empath and the eldritch horror - series masterlist
Summary: Number 8 challenged him. Ben just needed to decide if he liked it or not. Nope, definitely hated it. There was no way in hell he actually liked the little Empath. (Set in S3)
Warning: language, violence, fluff, angst, smut
Author's note: Just re-did this artwork to make it more from S3. In chronological order.

Holy shit! This is one of the best series i've ever read despite only having 5 chapters in it. You've written both characters with so much respect and quality that reading them is a masterpiece on itself. Can't wait for the next parts! đđđđđ
Oh my God that is actually really nice and sweet of you! đ I've been in a writing funk, so your comment has been a breath of fresh air. I may not be the best in narrating - unless I'm feeling really inspired and "awake" - but I like painting the picture with witty dialogue.
I do love the grump/sunshine trope with those two tickling each other's dark/light sides.
to the people who already have seen the new kraven movie (since i haven't yet) ... so you're saying we're not getting Russian Kraven?
What's the point in taking that accent away from him? Already had a feeling from watching the trailers but I was hoping we'd get some exceptions when in a primal/emotional state. Where is my Russian Kraven? Or British/Russian Kraven at least?
the empath and the eldritch horror (5/5) - sparrow!ben x empath!reader
Summary: Ben and Eight have breakfast together. Diego is being weird-er than usual. Two manipulators (more or less) have a heart to heart. Ben and Eight have the best and the worst day together.
Word count: 5.6k
Warning: language, mention of smut, angst (kinda?)
Author's note: Yes, this ends on a cliffhanger note, but that's only because the finale episode will be used as a recap in the new series, so you'll be picked up for the next ride. The Ben/Eight scene during the one hour reprieve can be read as a deleted scene since I couldn't just leave that out.
Just so you know, if you're interested in the sequel series for S4, you can already enter the taglist. Just access the series masterlist, the rest is gravy. đ I'm going to take a break after this since I'm getting mentally tired - maybe I depleted all there was for this character for now.
Dear me, thank you for 1.8k. Remember guys, reblogging and writing a small comment is love. Let me know if you even liked this.
Series masterlist
There was just so much to choose from, you realized, when you were standing in front of the buffet, admiring the breakfast collection. Your stomach emitted a rumbling noise to signal its craving for food. You just started filling your breakfast tray when Ben joined your side.
âHere, have some vitamins,â you said, popping a pineapple cube into his mouth.
A grunt left Benâs mouth. He paused awkwardly before he slowly munched on the fruit. Ben wiped his mouth. âYouâre lucky Iâyouâre alright. You do remember me punching your brother for wanting a hug, right?â
It felt surreal to have him not being his snarky self. Without him hissing at every turn. Benâs behavior in the elevator shouldâve been indicative enough of how the morning after was treating him.
âIs this the hangover talking or are you losing your touch? Because I remember you being way more hostile when you want to be.â
Ben groaned loudly at being caught unawares. âJust give me a few minutes with a cup of coffee, alright? Then Iâm back to insulting your whole family.â The corners of his mouth tensed until he managed a smirk.
Your eyes widened comically, clutching your throat. âI was getting worried for a second there,â you retorted before taking a sip from your cup of tea. Feeling satisfied with your yogurt and selection of fruits and cereals, you playfully brushed your shoulder against his and strolled to the dining area.
You chuckled quietly to yourself when you felt him inquisitively turn his head towards you.
Okay, fine. You were kinda flirting with Ben.
But sometimes it was just fun to tease him and to ruffle his feathers a bit since that guy was all about control.
You pulled out the chair at a long banquet table which was covered by a white tablecloth and took a seat with a small sigh. The sweet taste of a juicy strawberry was barely in your mouth before you were reintroduced to Benâs company who seated himself next to you. He dropped his chin on the palm of his hand, suffering in silence. Which didnât actually sound like the Ben you knew.
Maybe this was Benâs idea of a small pity party. Not needing another convincing of him, you touched his forehead without averting your eyes from your food.
Ben groaned while closing his eyes. Bit by bit, he managed to regain his energy. âOh damn, thatâs nice.â
âIt was starting to distract me,â you calmly let him know. As soon as you felt him slowly being himself again, you dropped your hand next to your cutlery.
Ben stared intently at you. âOh, my mistake. How could I dare for having a hangover, right?â He smirked sardonically before he drank from his coffee. âAnd here I thought you were being all altruistic. Maybe youâre just like me after all.â He inclined his head, like he knew something you didnât.
The moment when you stirred your cereals into the fruit yogurt, something else crossed your mind. Ever since this morning his mind was preoccupied with morose thoughts. Something must have gotten to him in the wee hours.
You exhaled unevenly. âWhatâs wrong?â
âWhy would there be something wrong?â Ben settled his arms on the table, turning his head towards you with a small smile on his face. Despite the energy surge, Benâs eyes looked tired.
âWell, if itâs not your emotions revealing themselves, itâs certainly that look in your eyes,â you said softly.
Ben grunted low in his throat. There was something he hadnât been able to forget, as much as he tried to bury it to the back of his head.
âAh, classic defense mechanism. Pushing away the people who care about you the most. Just like Dad.â
Ben inhaled deeply and spoke almost absentmindedly. âKlaus said something.â
Remembering one of the first words he uttered while in the elevator, you nodded. Wondering what it was that Klaus said that would make Ben feel so uneasy.
âIt really must have gotten to you, huh?â
âEnough to make me want to punch him in the face.â Ben smirked faintly.
âBut you didnât. That has to count for something.â The semblance of pride remained in your voice at the minimum of self-control.
~ Diego POV ~
From afar, Diego and Lila observed Ben and you having breakfast together. Almost in slow motion, Diegoâs eyes followed your hand movements when you reached forward to cover Benâs forehead, swiping his hair to the side while doing it. Barely even noticing the golden shimmer under her palm.
The serene and blissed-out expression on his face made Diego frown. âWhat the fuck?â Diego muttered under his breath, stalking towards the two of you.
He felt Lilaâs fingers clench around his bicep. âEasy there, tiger. Your sister doesnât have time for your testosterone bullshit,â she calmly whispered into his ear, trying to be some sort of voice of reason. A deed which didnât sound right in his head. Lila wasnât exactly known for being reasonable or calm.
âItâs not bullshit if mean Ben just wants to get his tentacles into my sister.â Diego waved towards the little shit. He felt the twitching in his fingers, as they reached for one of his knives in the holster around his ribs.
Lila leaned her arms around Diegoâs shoulders, muttering quietly. âOverprotective Diego is kind of a turn-on,â Her voice turned normal again. âCome on, just let your sister have a wee bit of fun for once. I mean, are you behaving like such a controlling, big brother that you donât even want your sister having a good shag?â
Despite Lilaâs flirting or intimate gestures, Diego felt far too tenseânot to mention, he was way too in his headâto react accordingly to his girlfriendâs needs. He whipped his head around, feeling slightly nauseated at the mere thought. âWhat did you say? You think theyâre having sex?â
âIâm saying I donât know. Why?â Lila pulled her head back, slightly befuddled. âWhat did you mean?â
âI meant that heâs still Dadâs kid. A damn Sparrow. Strategic power move, you know? Keep your enemies closer and whatever. I mean, since when are those two so chummy?â
âDiego, calm your tits.â Lila implored him with a soothing tone, widening her eyes. She enunciated her next words with a deep voice. âWe donât know whatâs going on. Is it that surprising that your sweetheart of a sister makes friends with literally everyone? I thought everything was cool.â
Diegoâs hard glare met Lila. âThat was before, Lila.â Squaring his shoulders, he stalked briskly towards you. Something flashed in his eyes. âLetâs find out.â
She whisper-hissed, âWhat do you mean letâs find out? Diego!â
âIâm proud of you,â you added with a tad of mischief and gentleness shining in your eyes.
Out of nowhere, the chair opposite of you was pulled out by Diego, rendering you both silent. With a loud grunt, he sat down, bracing his arms on the table. âHey, whatâs up with you two?â Diegoâs gaze alternated between Ben and you, it was almost the scrutinizing kind.
You paused from eating your yogurt, feeling stumped by the nature of the question. âHaving breakfast?â You arched your eyebrows, speaking slowly. âWhat are you guys doing?â The question was uttered more out of courtesy, getting the feeling that Lila didnât intend to take up more of your time. Despite that you watched her tentatively take a seat next to Diego. You didnât think it was possible for Lila doing anything tentatively.
âSame as you,â Diego said, taking a sip from his cup of joe while keeping his gaze set on the two of you.
âSomeoneâs being serious,â you muttered before leaning towards Lila, needing something to lift the mood. âI heard the two of you were being some horndogs.â You wiggled your eyebrows.
âOh, Y/N, you know, a lady never does kiss and tell.â
You smiled, provocatively tilting your head. âAnd what would you call yourself then?â
Gasping mockingly, Lila guffawed with laughter.
âCare to tell what you guys did once the party was over?â Like a bucket of ice-cold water drenching the atmosphere, Diego interjected.
Before you could react, Ben answered for you. âWhat do you care?â He braced his arm around his chair.
Diego smirked sarcastically, trying to get under his skin. âAnd here I thought we were becoming best buds.â
You tilted your head. If anything, Ben got to Diego before you couldâve said your piece. âNo, Iâm kinda with Ben here. Why are you in detective mode?â Widening your eyes, you inquired with both parts levity and earnest fascination. âWait, did someone actually die?â You kept weaving that hypothetical scenario in your head.
âNobody died, I think,â Lila threw in. After throwing a secondary glance at Diego, she affirmed stronger. âNobody died. Donât mind Diego,â Lila replied, soothingly stroking his shoulder. âHe didnât get much sleep last night. Didnât you, love?â Lila articulated with a firm tone, intending to jog his memory.
âI told you, babe, this is important,â Diego retorted forcefully.
âAnd Iâm telling you, youâre behaving like the weirdest guy ever. Now is not the time. Now, come on, letâs get moving before I change my mind.â She shook Diegoâs shoulders from behind when he didnât move a muscle. âDiego, Iâm serious. Move your cute bum.â
With great reluctance, Diego finally relented. But not before sending you two a meaningful glance.
âWhat was that all about?â Ben asked almost boredly once the both of them walked away. Or more like Lila dragged your brother away. Ben sank his teeth into a cucumber with relish, emitting a delicious crunch as he stared after them.
âThatâs Diego in detective mode for you. My theory with a whodunit still stands, you know?â
Ben hummed. âAnd what a tragedy it would be if someone didnât wind up dead,â he said with a sardonic smirk.
You merely threw him a dry expression at Benâs idea of a good time.
âSo, you heard about that family meeting dad called in?â Ben inquired and continued speaking when he heard you sigh wearily. âYou going to show up?â
There was something about Reginald calling in a meeting that felt like more of an emotional chore to pull through. Your eyes looked into the distance. âHe probably has some sort of devilâs advocate favor to ask.â
Ben arched an intrigued brow. âSo, youâd rather he influenced the rest of your family instead? Klaus doesnât seem that opposed to gaining his favor.â
With your eyes narrowing, you saw right through him. âDonât manipulate me.â
He shrugged without a care. âItâs not manipulation when you know itâs a manipulation.â
You tilted your head in consideration. âI donât think thatâs how it goes.â
âJust saying, you donât think there are a few other people who would join his side if given the chance?â Ben probed even further, âMaybe Allison or maybe even the dynamic duo we just had over?â
A gleam was shining in your eyes when you pursed your lips. âYou do realize I was going to show up either way before you decided to confront me with your sales pitch, right?â
Ben lost all the fight in his body when he leaned back in his chair with a huffing exhale. âWhy do I even bother with you?â
Five was the last to join the family meeting when Reginald and him entered the lobby. The younger Hargreeves was confronted with boisterous applause when he went across the carpet to sit on the armchair by the wall, sending you back to drunk Five during the wedding.
Klaus clapped his hands. âWoo! Five! Yeah!â
A sarcastic Diego agreed by mentioning, âThat speech last night! Wow!â
Lila joined the spectacle. âBrought me to tears, you big softy.â
You sat between Ben and Klaus on the round mustard-colored sitting area when Ben impatiently covered his forehead at everyoneâs antics.
Five waved a hand. âOkay. Enough. It was the booze talking. In the light of day, youâre all still deplorable.â
âAnd your dayâs about to get worse,â Reginald added ominously. Your inquisitive eyes met him anchoring a thickly bound journal to his chest. âAs a boy, I heard the legend of the eight bells. All these stories are the same. The village is under threat by flood, by fire, by a night that never ends. A shaman brings his disciples to a sacred cave.â
Lila laid with her head in Diegoâs lap. There was something in her eyes which told you she didnât fully believe the tale yet.
âHe tells them if they can ring the magic bells, the village will be saved and all will be restored just as it was. None of you can deny whatâs going on around us. All of existence will be gone by the end of the day, but whoever or whatever wove together space and time, they left a way to put things back together if the universe ever faced total annihilation. There is a portal in the universe. I built this hotel around it, and on the other side is the answer.â
Luther voiced your inner thoughts. âAnd⌠weâre supposed to, what? Just stroll in there, ring some bells, and fix this shit?â Sloane leaned against him, seeking comfort while her hand slung around his arm.
âSarcasm aside, you are mostly right. Except for the guardian.â
Viktor filled the tense silence. âWhat kind of guardian?â
With a calm voice, Diego explained, âKinda guardian that does this. He had a sword.â He held up a hand which had two fingers missing.
Eyeing the missing appendages, you spoke dryly, âSounds like the stakes are pretty low then. Not to mention very convenient.â
âIt is a force to be reckoned with,â Reginald assured fervently.
Still, Viktor remained cautious by this reveal. âWhy would the builders of this âback doorâ need to have a guardian?â
Sloane raised a hand, speaking all too eagerly, âAh! To protect it from people who want to use it for nefarious means.â
There was something about Reginaldâs agenda which irked you to no end. Especially with some sort of guardian protecting this reset device. âGuess weâre gonna be the ones who will use it for nefarious means,â you retorted sarcastically.
If there was one thing you could trust about Reginald, it was that he couldnât be trusted. So, you wondered what he wasnât telling everyone since this whole story seemed way too convenient for already offering a way out of this mess.
It was obvious where Allison stood with all of this. âSo itâs gonna take all of us to defeat the thing protecting the bells.â
Like he already made up his mind when he came to this gathering, Ben stood up and positioned himself next to Reginald. Despite the unwavering loyalty being drilled into him at a young and impressionable age, uncertainty still simmered under the surface. âIâm in.â
Diego followed. âMe too.â Lila winced when he left her side abruptly, making her jolt her head on the sofa.
Your eyes scrutinized Benâs unhesitating willingness, especially with Diego joining the mixâall too willing to go all Batman again.
âWell, I say we vote,â Viktor offered diplomatically.
Ben glared at him. âThis isnât a democracy. Dadâs calling the shots.â
âIâm with Viktor,â Five agreed. âWe vote.â
âThe world is ending, and you want to count hands?â Reginald exclaimed in incredulity. With Ben silently agreeing with him who wanted this to get done as quickly as possible.
âYouâre asking us to risk our lives,â Lutherâever the mediator among the familyâthrew in. âI think itâs only fair you give us time to discuss it. Privately.â After hearing Reginald make an indignant huff, he continued, âWhy donât we meet back here in an hour?â
After a tired sigh, Reginald brushed his hand against Benâs shoulder as he passed him by.
âAgreed,â Five added.
You didnât need the extra hour to make up your mind. You tasted the cold dessert in your mouth while your back leaned against the balcony on the roof top.
âSo, itâs a portal, right?â
Ben sighed, digging with his spoon into the tub of ice cream between you. âYes, itâs a portal from where I can summon eldritch monsters.â
âThen, if you had the choice what other monsters would you pull through your body?â
Ben groaned loudly at that. âYou know, I didnât have that in mind when you said weâd have some fun.â
âCome on, this is fun.â You giggled, waving your hand towards the sky. âThese are some front row seats to the apocalypse. Iâm trying to get to know you with these questions. Ergo, a fun time.â You pursed your lips. âIâm thinking probably a creature who has the skin of a snake, lots of eyes. Maybe some sort of Medusa, you know?â
Ben nodded indulgently. âDefinitely.â
âItâs your turn.â
Ben exhaled. âDo we have to turn this into a game?â
âItâs called a two-way street. Otherwise, I would just be the one talking which I donât mindâto a certain degree.â
âOf course.â
âThis way you could divulge what interests you in return.â
âWhat is that called?â
âAn interaction, you dork.â You chuckled, brushing your shoulder against his. âCan be anything. Favorite foods, cereal first or milk, favorite sibling.â
âHow do you see the auras?â
You turned your head. âThatâs your first question? You want to talk about powers?â
Ben shrugged his shoulders in justification, exclaiming, âYou were the one who did this first. Besides, I already know who your favorite sibling is.â
âWait, what?â
âSo, letâs get back to power talk.â Ben continued when he heard you grumbling, âHow do you see them? You keep mentioning clouds.â
You finally sighed, making up your mind. âEvery person has some sort of smoky cloud following behind in a specific color. All those colors just have a different meaning.â
âWhatâs mine?â
âWhat do you think yours is?â
âLet me guess, anger?â Ben smirked, having speculated from all your conversations.
âAnd green.â You looked at him with a serene expression.
âWhatâs that?â He arched an eyebrow, smirking mockingly. âHope?â
âItâs willpower.â
Ben averted his gaze before he hid his smile. âOh wow, you really know how to build a guy up.â His dark eyes met yours again. âHave you seen yours?â
You could remember the handful of times you saw the familiar colors while passing reflections. âYellow and violet. Fear and love.â
âFear and loveââ Ben quietly repeated to himself. âWhatâs that like?â
âHavenât you ever loved something so much you were afraid you were going to lose it?â
There was hesitation in his eyes. â⌠Canât say I have.â
You felt your mind wandering elsewhere as you leaned with your arms against the railing overseeing the lobby. The others had withdrawn for some peace and quiet to make their choices. It was barely half an hour left before the rest would have to reconvene.
Tensing your shoulders, you reared your head. Needing a moment for you to breathe mindfully again.
âAre you here for some peace and quiet?â
If there was one voice you didnât expect to hear, it was Allisonâs.
You didnât bother turning your head, hoping that Allison could read your disposition that you werenât good for company. At last, you murmured, âI thought some solitude might do the trick, but I guess thatâs out of the window now.â
Her long suffering sigh couldâve bridged the distance. Allison was torn between staying or going before she seemed to make up her mind. She exhaled deeply and took her time in joining you at the banister. âHere we are ⌠another day, another apocalypse. Whoâd have thought weâd be here again, huh?â
You had already gone tired from any affectation. âWhy are you here, Allison?â
A reminiscent smile tugged at her lips. âYou know, there was never any bullshitting with you. No pretending. I kinda loved and hated that about you at the same time. That day at the Sparrow Academy, you saw me. For what I really was. When everything was out in the open, when the others saw what I did, I was ⌠afraid that you would try to influence my emotions and then I was almost anticipating you to when you didnât.â
Something akin to disappointment rose in you at this recurring notion.
âThatâs not who I am. I wonât be subjected to being a painkiller you can just take when you canât deal with something.â As soon as you said it, you remembered who you were talking to and that there was a 50/50 chance that she would misunderstand and think you meant the reset of her daughter and not anything in general.
Before you could clarify, Allison beat you to it. âI know that now.â
There was hesitance in your eyes when you chose your words carefully. âWhy is it exactly youâre wanting to talk to me?â
âYouâre probably one of the only people in this family who doesnât want to kill me ⌠yet.â
It still came out of left field that Allison said that out loud. Despite that you raised your eyebrows at the astute observation of your siblings. âYet. With some exceptions.â With an exhale, you averted your gaze. âAs much as I understand and feel what youâre going through, I canât cross the line into your darkness.â
âI donât want you to.â
âThen tell me youâll be satisfiedâhappy when all of this is said and done,â you implored.
âI donât know. I hope so. This rage ⌠itâs all I have left. Iâm scared I would fall apart if I just let myself feel things.â With her eyes shining wistfully, Allison continued, âWhat do you see when you look at me? The truth, please.â
You didnât need to look at the wisps of smoke to discern the black and red colors surrounding her like an ominous beacon. âPain,â you inhaled, feeling your chest tightening. â⌠and rage.â
Allisonâs laughter echoed with a choked voice. âTrue.â She sent you a cursory glance. âIsnât it strange that with our powers being so similar, our paths still deviated?â
âWell, our powers donât shape us. We are the ones who choose how we use them.â
âThatâs a very black and white perception to have.â
âOnly when youâre telling yourself itâs the power making you do bad stuff, instead of the other way around.â
Allison shook her head. Perhaps a part of her felt rattled that you didnât take the bait and rather painted her in such a light that it was her own doing for becoming a cunning person for misusing her powers like that. âI just donât get it. How you could remain untainted by all of this. You have no idea what itâs like having someone like you grow up beside us.â
âItâs not like you ever gave me a shot, did you?â You replied monotonously. âFound someone else to blame other than the obvious culprit?â
If it was possible, Allisonâs huffing breath elevated her level of frustration even more. âI get it, Iâve been a shitty sister.â Her gaze wandered around in thought. âThe thing is, we donât have a lot of time. You always struck me as this sensible and sorta neutral person, so I guess, I wondered on which side you fell on?â
âThe unsurprising one. Youâll find out like the others, donât worry.â
Not satisfied by that answer, Allison clenched her jaw and licked her lips before she accepted your words with a small nod. Your gut was telling you that she intended to mentally join her side. Her back was already turned to yours when you threw one last shot.
âTo answer your question, I never wanted to hurt people with my power. Thatâs the difference between us. So, either tell me, you know what youâre doing and that youâll draw the consequences from your actions or promise youâll find a way back to us.â
There was an added layer with the tension in her body when Allison stopped in her tracks.
âI promise.â
It was unsurprising how fast an hour could pass when time was of the essence. The moment of truth called as soon as the question was uttered whether the other side should be crossed. You sat between Viktor and the just married twosome of Luther and Sloane on the stairs, calmly waiting for Allison to finish her take.
â-which way Iâll be voting. Weâve all been through a lot. Weâve all lost people.â She sent an awkward glance towards Five who leaned against the illuminated pillar. âMannequins⌠But their deaths have to mean something. Which is why Iâll be voting to go with Dad.â
Lilaâs quiet muttering to Diego, âWhat she said,â wasnât as muted as she wanted to believe when your eyes met the two over your shoulder. She hollered, pumping her fist while following Allisonâs example when she sauntered to Reginaldâs side. âLetâs go save the bloody universe!â
In turn, Diego moved away from the pillar and decisively walked towards the stairs with the rest of us. âAll right, well, since she said yes, I vote stay. Howâs that for nice?â Diego stared with defiance at Lila, offering a shallow smile.
âI am with Father.â Klaus spoke with a low dramatic voice. He waved his hand at the aforementioned man, with a flower in his palm.
Ben offered Reginald an indiscernible nod at Klausâ reaction, making you frown.
Sighing at Allisonâs gaze, Viktor spoke softly. âLook, I want to believe, okay? I really do.â He waved his hands. âI just canât shake the feeling we donât know what weâre getting ourselves into.â
The thunderclap echoing in the distance was a dire warning that time was a rare currency you didnât have.
Allison crossed her arms, stubbornly refusing to accept his stance. âNo, but we know what weâve got if we donât. We have to go into this together.â Her imploring stare switched over to the rest still sitting on the stairs. âViktor.â She smiled softly. âA family.â
Viktorâs body language turned weary and incredulous. âYou canât just keep throwing the word âfamilyâ around. It isnât enough. I vote stay.â
Hugging Sloane from behind, Lutherâs hands brushed against her shoulders, gazing at her from above. âUm⌠Sloane and I talked, and-â
Offering her silent support, Sloane covered his hand comfortingly.
âWell, weâre out,â Luther continued, âLook, we wanna spend whatever time we have left together, and not fighting some guy with a sword and ringing bells and stuff. SoâŚâ
âFour in, four out,â Viktor summarized.
âI saw the future, and it told me to sit this one out. I vote stay.â Five arched an eyebrow at Reginald. âItâs time we accept our fate.â Slowly, his head swiveled around until his green eyes met yours. âThe moment of truth,â he mumbled as encouragement.
Absentmindedly, you licked your lips in consideration. âWe jump from one apocalypse to the next. Maybe Iâm tired of jumping into the next one.â You shrugged your shoulders. âMaybe this is supposed to happen, who knows? Iâd rather we choose to live or die on our own terms than face something we arenât prepared for. So, Iâd rather stay.â
âThis is insane,â Ben exclaimed, waving a hand. âSo, youâd rather give up than to even try fighting?â
âSounds like a great ideaâconfronting an enemy we know nothing about except it can chop off digits. Sounds like someone to be reasoned with.â
Ben shook his head with a grimace. âYou didnât strike me as a little scaredy-cat. Thereâs something called strength in numbers, you know?â
His adamancy in trying to change your mind made you frown. âYou actually expected me to go pro-Reginald? In what world?â
âMaybe I expected more from you,â Ben hissed in a whisper.
The others revealed a mildly astonished expression at Benâs reaction to your line in the sand, throwing each other furtive glances.
Diego crossed his arms, wasting no time in standing close to you. âDude, she said no.â
Ben pointed at Diego as his shoulders tensed from the protective gesture, itching to go toe-to-toe with him. âDonât call me âdudeâ.â
âI reckon this is final then.â This time it was Reginald who spoke up ever since you offered your perspective.
Once the word final was uttered, Allison scoffed. âYouâre all pathetic,â she said, strutting away.
âWhy canât we go in there, just the four of us?â Ben pressed quietly on the subject.
âThat would mean certain failure. There must be eight.â Reginald answered. He faced the others in one last speech. âChildren, I canât say Iâm happy with this. But I see now the blame falls on me. I failed you when you were young, and I have failed you now. And in doing so, I have doomed the entire universe. If anyone needs me, Iâll be in the courtyard⌠awaiting the end.â With that, it was almost with a pitiful air in which he walked away.
Benâs hard glare haunted you when he followed his fatherâs example. âIdiots.â
âWas that a real apology?â Viktor inquired in uncertainty.
Luther remained steadfast, no matter what. âThe manâs never apologized for anything in his life.â
With his arms laced together over his abdomen, Diego admitted quietly, âI actually feel bad for him.â
Hearing him offer sympathy compelled you to send him an admonishing, but weary glance. âDonât.â
Five reinforced the notion. âDonât worry. Itâll pass.â
The elevator let out an ominous ding with its arrival from your side while you were unlocking your room when something else caught your attention.
âOh, great work out there.â
Enormous dread made your body freeze, as much as those words of utter sarcasm were to be anticipated. Ben wasnât the type to just take it without complaining the whole way through. Dropping your head with a sigh, you already let yourself in. Expecting him to barge in anyways.
Not bothering to close the door, Ben started with his rant. âI especially liked the part when you admitted to just accept fate and-â He dramatically spreads his hands in a final gesture, âjust give up. Very moving stuff.â
You exhaled heavily, turning around until you were facing him. âWhat do you want from me, Ben?â
âI want you to give a shit. We had this one shot to come together and face whatever there was on the other side.â Choosing to dip the knife deeper, Ben smirked darkly. âBut instead, you decided to blow it.â
âWait.â You tilted your head when you brought to mind the last few hours. Allison doing her little shtick was one thing but⌠âYou actuallyâA part of you expected me to go a different route. Thatâs what you were trying to do before. By going for an Allison maneuver?â
âFirst, thanks for the compliment. Being compared to the schemer of your family? Not exactly the insult you think it is. Second, I just canât believe youâd willingly waste the rest of your given time before the apocalypse. Truth be told, I thought youâd pick the smarter choice. Guess I pegged you wrong.â
Your skin started to heat up. The first petals started to fall from the flowers in the vase on the windowsill. A few breaths in and out later, you shook your head.
âBecause I donât see it like you? Because I donât trust your father? Because I donât want anyone to die just for his whims?â
Benâs eyes were blazing with fervor. âHeâs been training us for this our whole lives. It has to mean something. This didnât just fall into my lap. I was chosen for this. To be a Sparrow.â
You chose to confess what was on your mind, as much as it pained you. âYouâre breaking my heart. To willingly offer your loyalty to someone who will always have conditions bound to that. You want Reginald to see you?â
You shook your head. âHe wonât. As much as it takes me no pleasure to say this, but ⌠he wonât accept you as his equal. No one could ever measure up. Your Dad sees himself far too superior for everyone else. That man follows his own agenda.â
âYou think youâre so damn smart, donât you?â Ben harbored a narcissistic expression. His arrogance and destructive second nature felt like a familiar sting. âYour family is the reason weâre in this mess in the first place. You think Iâm just going to accept it when all of you are just wreaking havoc regardless of the consequences? At least our father is actually trying to fix this.â
âIâm just saying, you need to take a step back and listen to your gut instinct.â Your hands hovered in front of you, almost close to touching him. âReginald does not deserve your undying loyalty when itâs not even warranted. In every universe so far, he doesnât care about anything other than achieving his own goals. Do you think he would actually lay down his life for you or for Sloane? You deserve more than this. I care about you, Ben. Your sister cares about what happens to you. That has to mean something.â
With his eyes softening, it felt like Ben would step closer. For a few seconds you thought you got to him. Until he clenched his jaw.
âYouâre so pathetic,â Ben hissed, shaking his head in derision. âFor thinking your opinion matters to me.â His face hardened. âYouâre the damn replacement. You probably wouldnât have been even able to save your Ben, if you had the chance. So why donât you lie down like a good little corpse and wait for the Kugelblitz to take you. See if I care.â

the empath and the eldritch horror (3/5) - sparrow!ben x empath!reader
Summary: This was truly the end of the world. Both families chose to band together to get rid of the ball of lightning in the basement. Allison is showing her true colors, affecting Eight. And Ben is trying his hand at pep talks.
Word count: 6.8k (*cough* don't look at me)
Warning: language, angst, Eight's mental health (or powers?), violence, Eight's self-esteem, mention of smut, mention of drugs, Eight has a very specific tattoo
Author's note: This is the chapter I was most looking forward to đđ¤ If you know the gif, you'll know which episode this is set in. The last chapter will be then after the wedding shenanigans.
Full disclosure, when I first watched this season so many years ago, I felt like so many others, truly angry at Allison. It's why I didn't want to do a re-watch, but now I have a more balanced approach. Not to mention, yes, Eight is deeply affected by Viktor and Allison, but ... at the same time, she gets it in a way, so she's more neutral about it. I think the next chapter delves deeper into that.
This chapter is so long because I included the whole episode (almost) from start to finish. You're welcome. đ

Series masterlist
The absolute impossible happened. Who knew that both Hargreeves families could get over their petty squabbles and band together to defeat a common foe? This time around they chose to acknowledge that the Kugelblitz signaled a more pressing matter in spite of the egos of some people itching to kill the others.
Ben followed after Fei by sauntering into the sitting room as soon as some of your siblings had arrived to start off the family meeting and to deal with the next cataclysmic event.
Ben frowned impatiently at Feiâs inquiry about Diegoâs handâit was probably half curiosity and half a morbid way of making friends by feigning interest. âWe donât have time for idle chitchat. Everyone, sit down.â
Diego decided to be his typical brotherly self. âPlease would be nice.â
His partner in crime (as you lovingly called her in your head) called Lila chuckled at his antics.
Ben barely turned his head in his direction when he uttered with a serious, âNo.â With a frown, he tilted his head, scrutinizing the guests with a subtle glimpse. âWhereâs the Empath?â
Casting his suspicious gaze onto Ben, Diego narrowed his eyes at this fascination. Maybe this was the overprotective brother in him who didnât like the idea of this version of Ben being mesmerized by youâfor whatever nefarious motives. Since he didnât want to imagine anything else going on there.
Stretching his arm against his thigh as he leaned forward, Diego demanded with an accusatory voice, âWhy do you care?â
Ben waved a hand, smirking widely to get under his skin. âMaybe Iâd rather appreciate the presence of the sensitive sibling rather than the knife guy bashing his head through the fucking wall.â
âYou little-â Diego hissed.
This was the moment when you arrived at the Academy. âI heard someone requested my being here,â you sang, hoping to de-escalate any frictions with your arrival.
The tension in Benâs shoulders dissolved. You reminded yourself to appear as easy-going as possible when you passed Ben. Trying to disregard the intense gaze he sent you over your shoulder. You picked the seat in the middle of the couch, between Diego and Five, just in case Diego and Ben decided to butt heads.
Mildly curious, Diego grumbled, âHow can you even stand the guy?â while waving a hand in Benâs general direction as a gesture of irritation.
This was just your idea of a good time. To be subjected to being the woman in the middle trying to mediate between two pig-headed guys.
You sat down with a sigh, sending Ben a teasing expression. âSometimes he reminds me of you.â
Their reaction was instantaneous.
Benâs face contorted into a grimace. âDonât insult me.â
Simultaneously, Diego added, âNot funny.â
Fei and Lilaâs chuckles eased the tension in the room. But this appeared short-lived.
âAre we done now with the little stand-up show? Can we get on with it?â This time, Ben branded you with his dark stare.
You exhaled heavily, choosing to grant Ben this small amount of silence and Luther the opportunity to say his part, due to him bringing everyone together. The absence of Klaus and Viktor was starting to concern you. It was the not knowing part which bothered you, especially since there was this specific tradition in this family to not tell anyone anything. So, the chances of being absorbed by the Kugelblitz or being kidnapped were equally high. Or they just didnât care to show up.
As soon as your gaze wandered around the room, the darkness emanated from Allison like a cloud, prompting you to slowly turn your head. Wisps of dark smoke encircled her being more and more by every second.
When Allisonâs gaze almost found you reluctantly, you mouthed, âYou good?â
The coldness in her eyes froze you in place, when she muttered, âNever better.â
Luther distracted you from your anxious mind when he stood up to face the families. âSo, uhâŚâ He cleared his throat. âThis is kinda nice, right? All of us here together. One big happy family.â Luther chuckled before he bent down towards Sloane who was sitting in a chair across from you. âI feel like Iâm sweaty. Am I sweating?â
âNo, youâre fine.â Sloane whispered back reassuringly.
âLook, I know thereâs been bad blood between us,â Ben admitted with a carefree voice, like everything which transpired between the families was just water under the bridge already. âWhatever. Bygones, right?â
Faking a smile to speed up the process, Ben pointed at Diego as soon as he raised his hand. âQuestion?â
âYeah, if I kill you, do we get our Ben back?â He said, prompting Fei to snicker in jest.
You sighed, leaning back against the back of the couch. Diego must have sensed the grim expressions on Benâs face and yours when he added, âHypothetically.â
âGuys,â you admonished your brother. You felt the itch in your fingers before you finally relented and nervously nibbled on of the snacks which was laid out on the table like a small peace offering or a more strategic distraction. Knowing you would need the food to get you through the rest of the meeting.
âKeep talking, and your hand wonât be the only thing bleeding,â Ben hissed through gritted teeth.
âOkay, if the testosterone twins are done,â Five interrupted before a fight could fully break out between the Twos, âIâd like to get back to a plan.â
The sudden appearance of Viktor was a welcome distraction. But that was before you detected the yellow tendrils of fear wafting around him. Viktor rushed in, demanding answers while alternating his gaze between Allison and Ben. âWhere is he? What did you do to Harlan?â
Ben had the good instinct to sneakily take a seat between Five and you. You were grateful that you functioned as a buffer next to Diego. He picked up the tub of cheese balls from the table and placed it in his lap, watching (and relishing) in rapt fascination the drama unfolding. You felt an altercation between Allison and Viktor about to boil over, not knowing whether to step in or letting it play out. Judging by Allisonâs pain, you felt concerned if it could be contained for long.
âThey didnât do anything. I did. I killed Harlan,â Allison stated without emotion in her voice.
You knew better though. Allisonâs eyes told you how this deplorable action wasnât as easy for her as she wanted to let on.
The longer you remained in their vicinityâespecially when Viktor was added to the mixâan almost deafening sensation grew in your ears. You tried to keep your emotions in check, afraid of what would happen if you would let it erupt. Sometimes you hated being this vessel of empathy. Like you were just along for the ride or were some sort of empty glass while the emotions of others filled you with water, making it a part of you. Leaving you to yourself while you tried to stop it from overspilling.
Sensing the overflowing feelings of rage and vindication from Allisonâs side and the pain and grief on both sides, you experienced their conflict at parts like some sort of tunnel vision.
âBecause he didnât deserve to live,â Alison avowed, expecting it to be a given.
Uncomfortable silence prevailed the longer Allison and Viktor remained in their stalemate.
You tried to get your breathing under control and focused on anything else than the clashing of ideologies. Needing to distract yourself, you tried to hone in on Benâs mischief taking over.
âTwenty bucks on the little one,â Ben whispered to Five before munching on his snack.
âIâll take that action,â Five agreed quietly.
âI know Harlan killed all of our mothers.â Allisonâs statement pulled you back after only listening to their voices halfheartedly.
Your siblings erupted into shocked reactions at that turn of events. âWhat?â
âYeah, but he didnât mean to hurt anyone,â Viktor attempted to appease the rest of his family, despite Five and Diegoâs vexation slowly taking over. âHeâI knew him. And he was sweet and kind until I made him like us. Okay? So, I screwed him up. And if you need someone to blame, Iâm right here-â
Yet, Allison didnât care for any redemption of Viktor. She turned confrontational while she was burning for a fight. âWhat makes you think I donât?â
Your eyes widened anxiously at Allisonâs aura shifting into a mixture of a darker red and almost black.
âThis wasnât about saving the world. This was about hurting me. Payback for-â Viktor grunted lowly.
Gingerly, yet menacingly, Allison moved to her feet. âGo on. Say her name.â
With your eyes closed, you clenched your hands into fists. âCan we please stop?â You mumbled quietly. The provoking words of your siblings echoed shallowly while your breathing was turning heavy.
Ben shifted his head in your direction at the shift of your breathing pattern. The tunnel vision was still happening when you felt Benâs hand covering the edge of your back, but thankfully without touching the sliver of skin. Just letting his hand linger in place. His warmth was perhaps one of the only things keeping you centered in the moment without going insane. Or at least without releasing an exaggerated amount of energy to protect yourself.
âTo what? Help me grieve? God, this whole family is so quick to tell me to suck up my pain and so worried about fixing yours! Somebody had to pay because you never seem to. Destroy the world, kill Pogo, almost kill me, and for what? So we can all run around and clean up your mess? Iâm sick of it.â
You could feel Diegoâs concerned gaze dwell on you. âTake it easy, Allison,â Five interjected.
âThis isnât helping,â Diego added, knowing that Allison wasnât exactly known for respecting the boundaries of others when she felt attacked as a person.
Ben shushing at both siblings, and anyone who were trying to get between Allison and her thirst for vengeance, reminded you he was still being an asshole. Even if he was being nice when no one was looking.
You sighed, rejecting his offered touch by leaning forward. Benâs grumpiness was more than obvious. If you didnât already sense it growing in him, then it was the small grumbling noise he made while leaning back.
As soon as Viktor tried to say his part, Allison yelled, âShut your mouth!â
From across the room, you felt Viktor choking from Allisonâs power upgrade. But this didnât end there when Allison kept screaming, âEvery time I build a new life for myself, you end the world and take it from me!â
Feeling angry for Viktorâs sake, Luther jumped into action. âAll right, thatâs it. Knock off the power shit, Allison. Itâs not okay!â
The gratification grew around her when Allison delivered one last blow. âWe should have left you in the basement.â
The unrest of your siblings broke out when she crossed the line. Diego jumped up from the couch with the others, commanding resolutely, âWhoa! Allison, all right!â
Viktor finally had enough when he slapped her in the face with the back of his hand. After being asked about her well-being, Allison assured them, âIâm fine. Letâs continue.â
You wished it was that simple.
With his footsteps departing, Viktor shook off his hand with rage.
âSweet. You guys fight just like us,â Ben commented with a smug grin on his face.
There was sadness and disappointment in Diegoâs voice when he elaborated, âNah, man. We donât fight like this.â
Once the air felt clearer with the absence of Viktorâor at least without a face for Allison to get mad atâyou managed to breathe normally again. Your body still felt shaky when you stood up, needing a moment to come to your senses again.
Luther seemed to have read your intentions correctly, when he said, âHey, Y/N, where-â
Blinking wearily, you murmured hoarsely, âI need a moment. I think everyone could use a bit of a break,â before walking around the couch.
Unfortunately, that meant crossing the path of Allison who eyed you with apprehension. As much as you wanted to avoid the confrontation. Allisonâs arms were crossed when she faced you.
She smirked crookedly, tilting her head. âHave you decided to manipulate my emotions? Take my anger away?â
You felt too tired for any sort of conflict to arise again. As much as there was a lot unsaid between you two. Unlike her, you didnât believe in manipulating other people.
Inhaling deeply, you gathered your strength. Truth be told, you had no intention of hurting her. With that in mind, you still couldnât stop the pain from showing on your face. âI thought you knew I donât force myself onto others,â you said almost in disappointment before leaving the sitting room and any of that lingering darkness behind. It felt way too obvious when the air you breathed seemed cleaner, less of a struggle.
You barely walked a few steps down the hallway when you heard slow footsteps follow behind.
âWhere are you going?â The voice of Ben inquired expectantly behind you.
You sighed before you slowly turned around to face him. âI need some fresh air. Going up to the roof.â You smiled sarcastically. âSorry I canât enjoy the show.â
Ben looked over his shoulder to keep track of where the others were. The glittering in his eyes revealed his intentions before he even spoke. âYou want to see my room?â Benâs idea of flirting entailed him placing his hands in his pockets and letting the muscles in his arms flex.
As much as his concept of fun would serve as a nice distraction, you still couldnât help the little awkward smile on your face. âYou think the airâs better there?â
The earnestness in Benâs eyes couldnât fully diminish the mischief he had in mind when his eyes wandered up the stairs. âWell, itâs definitely secluded. No oneâs going to bother you there.â His suggestion turned into something more teasing. âYou could see how it looks in broad daylight.â
Leave it to Ben to try to cheer you up while the situation was so dire.
You chuckled. âSure. No ulterior motives at all.â
Ben covered his chest in mock hurt. âMoi? What do you think of me? Iâm just a nice guy whoâs offering his private quarters as a small sanctuary for you.â
You nodded, pursing your lips. Remembering how he could stir some trouble when it was fun for him before choosing to go in a completely different direction when it suited him. âSure, nice guy.â You braced your hands against your waist. âWould you also give that offer to Diego?â
Benâs face remained blank. âRight. Are we talking about the guy with the stupid hat or with his knife kink?â When you didnât rise to the bait, he continued, âDonât worry, I donât care about their names. My hospitality does have its limits after all. Besides, youâre one of the few people I donât mind being up there. You know, maybe I could help you take your mind off of things.â Ben offered, stroking your arm through your clothing.
It was with reluctance when you pulled away. âAs much as a distraction would be appreciated, I need to be alone right now. Unless you still want that anxiety attack while being around me.â
Nonetheless, the reminder made him smirk. âPromises, promises.â
âWhatever you guys decide, Iâm all for. Clearly you donât need me for it.â
You still had your eyes closed when you heard the door on the rooftop slide shut. With your hands on your stomach, you were lying down on the cornice and enjoying some peace and quiet. The sensation of the familiar aura reached you, instantly letting you know who it was that joined you.
You breathed in deeply, thrumming your fingers against your abdomen. âI wasnât aware that I gave off the impression that I wanted company?â
âI was being more than generous by waiting five minutes before coming out here,â Ben hissed, like it went without saying that he would show up.
You smiled serenely. âWhat a gentleman,â you whispered teasingly. Ben seemed to be in one of his moods. Judging by that, you surmised he met another of your siblings or one of his own who soured his attitude.
The auditory perception of a city burning from the assimilation of the Kugelblitz rang in the distance. The only thing out of place in this universe. With you lying on the cornice it felt like the good olâ times ⌠if you tried to ignore the abuse and trauma being inflicted on by Reginald.
Ben placed his arms next to your head and leaned his body against the waist-high parapet, exhaling loudly.
You cleared your throat, deciding to take his bait. âSomething on your mind?â
Ben didnât need more prompting when he just as quickly replied, âYou know, your emo brother is really something else. I mean, being stubborn just to stick it to someone or because they didnât get an apology? Talk about pathetic and spiteful.â
So, it was frustrated Ben who needed to vent.
You sent him a small smile, watching him upside-down. Or more like to the side. âYes, because you could never be spiteful.â
Ben waved a hand in vehement agreement. Humor was shining in his eyes when he smiled. âExactly. You really get me.â
He eyed the bricks in the low wall. âSloane, Lila and Christopher are going to work together to contain it. Viktor, as well, if he finally gets off his butt.â
âThatâs good.â You blinked at him, feeling like he was reluctant to tell something else. Which didnât feel like Ben.
âI came here because I told the others they would need your help in beating this thing.â
Astonishment filled your belly with uncomfortable heat. The blood rushed to your head despite you slowly sitting up. Your feet dangled at the sides of the wall. âWhy would you do that?â You said with a husky voice.
âYou have all these abilities at your fingertips, you just wonât use them.â
You shrugged your shoulders, surprised by Benâs insistence. At feeling enraged on your behalf. Especially since he only knew you less than a week. âIâm just an Empath. I canât control stuff which ⌠probably isnât even human.â
âYouâre notâyouâre not just one thing. Do you even see what youâre capable of? Iâve seen it. I mean, converting energy? Projecting illusions? And youâre supposed to be Number Eight? What the hell?â
âThe numbers donât really mean anything. I mean, Viktor is like Number Seven.â Even you could hear that your arguments sounded feeble. After so many times of being told to be one thing by Reginald Hargreeves, it felt like second nature to tell Ben you werenât what he said you were. It felt surreal to have someone other than Diego in your corner claiming you were more than you wanted to acknowledge.
Ben shook his head. âIn another universe, you couldâve been a Sparrow. I mean, what just happened in there?â He pointed back to the Academy. âYou couldâve influenced everyone in there and be done with this shit.â
âThatâs not me. I do that to people who hurt us. Not my own family.â
âNo, thatâs not it. You know what I think? Youâre just so scared to show your true potential. Show them what you can do. Iâve seen you. If you were able to blast me away by creating a shield of kinetic energy, you should be able to hold something else in place.â
You narrowed your eyes at Benâs advocacy on your behalf, feeling overwhelmed by his mere presence. âWhy are you so adamant in analyzing all of my powers? Is this your plan to recruit me? You already gained Luther. What else do you want?â
âIâm trying to help you. You could be so much more than just the girl who feels stuff around her,â Ben said with utter passion in his voice, making the veins in his neck protrude.
âWow, Iâm being psychoanalyzed by you because Iâd rather not take care of a ball of lightning? So, tell me, what else am I supposed to be afraid of?â Yes, you were being defensive, but maybe a small part of you actually wanted to hear someone state objectivelyâmore or lessâthat you could hold your own to someone like Allison or Viktor.
Well, Viktor was kind of a big deal. You favored the possible outcome of at least standing firm against him for about five minutes or without instantly dying.
âYouâre terrified of losing them. How they would react to the magnitude of your true self. You think everyone is like Dad. But theyâre not. Screw everyone else if they are.â
Wow, resilient Ben was something else. Especially if he defiedâat least mentallyâsomeone like his father. Knowing it would be a long time coming before he would actually turn away from him.
You remained silent, trying to process his analysis before you finally found your voice again. âDid you give Viktor the same pep talk when you tried to rouse his participation?â
Ben smirked at the memory. âYou know I can be very inspiring.â He sighed heavily, offering his hand. As if it took a lot out of him to even provide the gesture. âCome on.â
Your heart was beating wildly in your chest. After some hesitation, you exhaled and reached forward until you felt the warmth of his hand. Trying to pretend you didnât sense Benâs respect for you once you touched his bare skin. He helped you down from the cornice.
You sighed, knowing that time was of the essence. âLetâs just do this.â
As soon as Ben and you headed down to the basement, you noticed how both families were already gathered.
Five turned around, with his arms crossed. âNice of you to join us. Wouldnât have been the same without you.â
Diego wearily rolled his eyes. âFiveâs just being Five. He didnât have his coffee yet. We could use your magic touch, you know.â
Truth be told, Five always felt like a dark horse to you. And someone who behaved like an old man when he finally blinked back. Sometimes you just wished that you could actually get to know him. Not just the stories of legendary status about the outlier of the family who first defied Reginald. It felt like this was the only thing keeping you from truly becoming a part of this family. As much as you yearned to be. Running from one apocalypse to the next didnât make you feel like Five even had the time to get to know the newest member of the family.
âYou okay, kid?â Diego asked quietly, appraising your eyes for any mental harm shining through.
You nodded calmly to cease him from worrying too much. Something else caught your eye though. With wariness you scrutinized the Kugelblitz in the center of the basement. âSo, thatâs the thing, huh?â
Fei stepped forward. âIf you mean the entity which is responsible for the collapse of micro black holes absorbing everything around it, then yes.â
âAnd absorbing billions of people so far. I donât think we have a lot of time,â you said anxiously.
âNo time like the present then.â Ben clapped his hands once, ready to get rid of the universal threat for good.
âOkay, how do we start?â Viktor inquired with a curious mindset.
Sloane did the honors of explaining. âHave you ever moved a nest of bees? You canât just pick it up. You have to keep the nest calm while you build a box around it, and then you trap it.â Her eyes met yours. âBen said you could contain it. Keep your shield over mine.â
You merely nodded in understanding.
âOne of those black holes inside is vibrating at a different rate,â Fei continued.
âI can feel them.â Viktor nodded.
âGood. Whatever happens, donât let them speed up or change, or everything will blow.â
âDonât shake the bees. Got it,â Viktor replied to Fei.
He started it off by becoming paler and controlling the vibration frequency, with Lila mimicking his actions. As soon as Sloane used her gravitational powers to condense it, you pushed forth a telekinetic shield from within to keep the entity contained.
Graceâs voice spoke faintly from the stairs. âYou didnât tell me you were building a prison for God.â
âMom?â Diego asked confusedly.
âThe day of vengeance was in my heart and my year of redemption hath come,â she said ominously before pointing a flamethrower towards anyone standing in her way.
You kept one hand focused on the ball of lightning while stretching out your other arm, using an encircling shield to keep them safe. Inadvertently, the flames started to lick Graceâs skin. âDoes anyone mind? Not good at multitasking here,â you said while keeping your eyes set on this universe destroyer.
Five had the good sense to blink her away before Diego would have to take care of his surrogate mother himself.
The moment when everything was calm again, Christopher disintegrated into smaller cube pieces, containing the Kugelblitz. You watched in suspense, feeling Ben move closer to you.
Sloane held Lutherâs hand. âNext Kugelwave in three, two, one.â
Everyone held their breath. Counting the seconds after the destruction was supposed to take place. Almost like you expected something wrong to happen.
You were studying Christopher when the sentient box released a fart.
Exhaling a breath of relief, you looked at the others while chuckling.
You could swear you even heard him utter audible sounds which sounded close to, âOh, was that me?â
The Sparrows certainly knew how to party and have a good time. Once the Kugelblitz had been dealt with, Sparrows and Umbrellas alike danced and drank together. Diego was a good sport by cutting off the top of champagne bottles with a katana before Ben poured the alcohol into the flutes of any willing participants.
You had the perfect view from the couch while Ben was getting sloshed and kept on filling Fiveâs champagne glass. It was actually hilarious to witness.
Diego was having fun dancing while balancing the longsword and jostling Ben from behind every time he tried drinking straight from the bottle.
You eyed the approaching company joining your lonesome self.
âIs someone having fun?â Fei asked with a smile.
You lifted your glass for show. âAlready did. This is me relaxing and enjoying myself.â
âI saw that. You and Sloane seem close.â
You narrowed your eyes, remembering you dancing with Luther, Diego and Sloane at times. Your relationship to the Sparrows was slightly less tense than you were used to. But due to the power struggles within that family and maybe some hesitation in your own family, you still decided to keep your distance from Ben.
Despite the dark-eyed stares he was sending you from across the room. You remembered the few times when he leaned his body against your back while playfully filling up your glass when it was starting to empty. Benâs body language was more than obvious that he wouldnât mind a few dances with you. But you also knew he would never do that, especially with his family members watching.
âWell, of course, sheâs a sweetheart. Not to mention, Lutherâs lady love.â
Fei hummed. âSo, you like solitude, huh?â
âSometimes. Keeps me calm.â
âWell, Allison just left, so your mood should definitely increase by not feeling her presence.â
You shrugged. âAs long as Viktor and Allison are not in the same vicinity, sure.â
âThat was some good work you did in the basement. It really makes me wonder though ⌠the fact that your family didnât advocate your skills in the first place. I mean, why would my brother throw your hat in the ring? He seemed really certain ⌠that you would deliver.â
Feiâs suspicious mind being disguised as interest didnât put you at ease. âWhat do you mean? He just wanted this entity out of his basement. The sooner, the better. Now he has one less thing to worry about.â
âJust curious about his involvement, thatâs all.â Fei braced her arm against the backrest of the sofa and leaned closer in a secretive manner. Giving off an impression which bordered on threatening and being your best friend. âSounds very altruistic. The problem with that is, Ben isnât the selfless kind, he always has something else in mind. I mean, he mentions your name and instead of sending one of your brothers, heâs getting you himself? Sounds interesting, donât you think?â
Your eyes caught Ben who was already staring at you and Fei with a frown. You gazed speculatively at Fei again. âIs there still some internal power struggle I should know about?â
Fei threw her head back to cackle, like you had said the most entertaining thing ever. âIsnât there always?â
You bit your lower lip and stood up. âWhy the curiosity?â
Fei remained seated when she looked up at you. âSomeone has to keep their guard up. Iâd hate for you to turn into my enemy,â she said monotonously, so matter-of-factly.
âDitto.â You checked your surroundings to watch out for the remaining guests. Noticing how Lila just followed after a departing Diego. Maybe it was time to slowly hit the road while things were somewhat amicable. âYou know what? I think Iâm going to hit the kitchen if thatâs okay. I need to get some food into me.â
She waved a hand to indicate her consent. âYou do that.â
~ Ben POV ~
The moment when you left the room, Ben was certain something had happened. The strange look you sent him before was the first clue that something was off. He grabbed Feiâs arm when she was about to cross the room. âWhat did you do, Fei?â
She smiled innocently. âDo? I didnât do anything. Just had a little chat with your Empath.â
Fei calling you by that nickname left an uncomfortable feeling in his stomach. Ben spoke through gritted teeth, âAbout what?â
She tilted her head to stare straight at him. âYou, of course. Youâre quite fascinated with her, arenât you?â
Ben let out a scoff before smirking. âSo, you canât see it? What sheâs capable of? Someone who can control the feelings of others? Unlike you, I see the big picture. Proves why youâre not Number One, huh?â He turned his head, knowing that the party was winding down. âYouâre saying she left already?â
Fei crossed her arms and enunciated, âYour little Empath was just hungry.â
Absentmindedly, you appreciated the cold taste of Rocky Road in your mouth while sitting at the kitchen table.
âSo, this is your idea of celebrating?â
Not realizing you were being watched since you were so distracted from your wayward thoughts, you looked up to see Ben leaning against the doorjamb. âThis is me eating my fill.â You let your scoop-filled spoon hover in the air and smiled giddily. You glanced down, taking out another spoonful. âYou know, since Iâm having a taste of you.â
Ben tilted his head, huffing with small laughter. âSounds hot.â
You rolled your eyes at that dirty mind of his and moaned, letting the frozen dessert melt in your mouth. âNot like that. You guys even have an ice cream brand and actually keep that stuff here.â
âRight.â With that, he stepped forward into the kitchen.
âI mean, itâs alright. Probably way too overpriced.â Your enthusiasm awakened and you turned your head to look at Ben. âWait, does Christopher have a flavor?â
âBirthday cake.â
âHuh, not what I expected. Weirdly fits,â you muttered under your breath and shook your head to clear your head. âAnyway, just decided to have something to eat, otherwise I would just fall asleep. Fei said it was okay.â
Ben wandered to the cupboards, opening and shutting drawers. âThere is still a bed, you know. Still hasnât changed.â
You chuckled, pointing with your thumb behind you without looking. âBehind me.â
He pulled out a spoon and arrogantly waved it around. âRight, I knew that.â
You nodded, pursing your lips at his make-believe. âSure you did.â
Ben got himself a taste after sitting on the bar stool diagonally across from you.
You slid the tub closer to the middle of the wooden table. âBesides, donât think thatâs a good idea.â
He didnât seem to agree when he frowned in confusion. âWhy is that?â
You laughed, like it shouldâve been obvious. âBecause of your sister? She probably has her crow spies everywhere. Especially after today.â
Ben chuckled to himself and widened his eyes sarcastically. âWow, get over yourself, youâre not that special. Was just offering a bed. Purely platonic.â
âDonât be such an asshole.â
âTold you, Iâm nice guy Ben.â
His statement made you observe him silently and place your fist under your chin. âSure you are.â
âI heard the two of you had a conversation. What did Fei want to talk about?â
You rolled your eyes. âIâm not getting in the middle of whatever it is the two of you are playing.â
âCanât change the nature of people.â Ben licked the cold treat from his lips. âStill didnât answer the question. What made you want to flee for the kitchen?â
Sarcasm made your eyes light up. âA healthy appetite.â
âIf you say so.â
âNot going to divulge more, in case you want to further examine the details of my powers into your Eight dossier.â Sometimes you had to catch yourself from saying more. Since you had been seconds away from straight-out telling him that overexerting yourself just made you hungry in general. And if it was a good enough excuse to evade Benâs sister, then so be it.
Narrowing his eyes in incredulity, Ben felt disgruntled for your sake. âIs that such a bad thing wanting you to expand your powers?â
âNot if itâs just your intent to gain some sort of upper hand.â
Benâs eyes darkened seductively when he pointed his spoon at you. âYouâre saying I still canât persuade you just a little bit to join our little ragtag group of Sparrows?â
You leaned your body forward mischievously. âAre you saying I canât appeal to you to join our band of misfits instead?â
Ben scoffed loudly, straightening up in his seat. âHard pass.â
A self-assured expression lingered on your face when you spoke with a dry tone. âRight. Who knew our families could work together after all?â
âOh please, only a few of them are bearable.â
With warmth in your cheeks, you felt yourself gush, âLook at you making friends. Iâm so proud of you.â
Ben smirked mockingly. âYouâre hilarious.â
Your mind went back to the party, remembering the unusual side of Ben just having fun. âWere you trying to get Five drunk?â
Ben chuckled. âSomeoneâs got to keep the old man in line.â
âPriorities, hmm?â You sighed, looking outside the window above the sink and noticing how dark it already was. âAnyway, I have to go. You know, not to overstay our welcome. Thanks for the dessert.â You closed the lid of the tub and jumped down from your seat.
He smiled sardonically. âI wish I could say âAnytimeâ, but, you know, still got a reputation to uphold.â Ben copied your stance, staring directly at you under the dim lighting.
Willing to play his little charade, you smiled softly. âOf course you do,â you retorted, wordlessly taking the spoons and placing them in the sink. You heard Ben stash the ice cream back into the freezer before he closed the refrigerator with a dull thud. You could feel your skin getting warmer the longer he was watching you intently.
You tilted your head in concentration and felt your eyes light up when Benâs emotional state came in waves towards you. âWhy the curiosity?â You turned around until you were gazing at Ben.
With a rough and quiet voice, he twirled his finger while muttering, âTurn back around.â
Pursing your lips with a humming sound, you followed his request and looked through the window which oversaw the courtyard. âYou donât expect me to tell you where the knives are, do you?â
Ben snorted at your imagination. âYou think this is an elaborate ploy to stab you to death?â
âI donât know, Brutus. Could be an interesting endgame.â
âThen tell me, what do you feel right now?â
You closed your eyes, breathing in deeply to center yourself. âYour playfulness, your curiosity.â You opened your eyes again when something else reached you. âOh wow, you canât wait to touch me, huh?â
Exasperation was added to the mix when he stepped closer. Ben exhaled heavily before you could feel his presence behind you. His warm breath tickled the back of your neck and his fingers danced around the nape of your neck, gently brushing your hair to the side.
âAre those goosebumps?â Ben purred.
You chuckled, watching Benâs reflection through the window. âTo spare your ego, I think Iâm gonna have to decline to answer.â
âWhatâs that?â He asked, stroking the ink on the back of your neck.
You licked your lips almost in anticipation. âItâs called a tattoo. I donât know if you guys have that in this universe.â
Ben ignored your amusing nature when you threw him a sassy look over your shoulder. âWhatâs it stand for?â
âWhat makes you think it stands for anything?â You whispered, getting lost in this intimate atmosphere.
Frowning in concentration, Ben analyzed the tattoo. You already knew what he was looking at. The base of two pyramids overlapping and facing each other, with a respective line drawn horizontally beneath the apex of both triangle shapes. His fingers carefully traced the shapes before he spoke slowly, âFor sure. Very intricate lines. You probably picked this because you thought it looked cool, right?â
âI made the draft. Klaus was the one who held the needle.â
âAnd Klaus is ⌠who?â
âThe guy you punched?â When Ben showed no further reaction, you continued, âWhen we arrived?â
âRight. For a second I confused him with knife boy. Since, you know, mentally, I punched your knife brother-â
You rolled your eyes and interjected, âDiego.â
Like you hadnât said a thing, Ben continued, âCountless of times in my head.â
You sighed, remembering the pure form of testosterone being released every time they faced each other. âYou two shouldnât even be in the room together.â
Benâs voice turned mockingly lighthearted. âOh, you promise?â It shifted into something mildly curious. âKeep going.â
You teasingly asked, âWhat do you think it means?â
âPutting me in the spot again? Alright. If itâs coming from you, theyâre probably ⌠the alchemy symbols for the four elements?â
He already knew.
You huffed, lightly shoving him back with your shield of energy. âFucking asshole.â You turned your body. Despite your furrowed brows, an astonished smile still lingered on your face. You had to respect him for the hustle he was playing while pretending otherwise. Or at least his subterfuge as a way to touch your skin.
Ben braced himself against the jostling chairs with his hands while one tentacle shot out to keep his balance. Slightly taken aback by your vehement reaction, he chuckled, letting pure joy shine in his eyes. âWow, was this as hot for you as it was for me? I like this version of you.â
You chose to ignore his idea of flirting. âI canât believe you were trying to screw with me.â
The tentacle retracted into his stomach again. âI wasnât. Well, not totally. Doesnât explain the reason behind it. Why the four elements?â
âI figured after Reginald forced this tattoo on us, I should choose for myself what I really want to do with my body. And I learned while Klaus and I were experimenting with his recreational stuff-â
You appreciated the small moment of real and unguarded whimsy in Benâs eyes. Something candid than just the sarcastic kind.
âI learned that my powers would enhance when I was connected to some of those elements. Like some sort of physical conduit. Showed me that everything was connected around me. That my mind could settle when everything around me was calm.â
His body language shifted into something more calculating with his next words. âMaybe you should just influence your environment, so you can finally calm your mind.â
âThat would be more like a temporary solution.â
âPerhaps you should just stick with me. This way I can show you a better perspective than what your family is offering you.â Ben placed his hands in his pockets. âIt could help you sleep better at night.â Almost like he was reminding you of his proposal, he widened his arms. âOffer still stands, you know.â
You chuckled. âMaybe next time,â you said, merely delaying the inevitable. With a small sigh, you advanced towards him until there was barely any distance separating the two of you. With delicate motions, you touched his neck, letting warmth wander through your fingertips.
His skin started to glow dimly under your hand. Wordlessly, he covered your hand with his. A part of you wanted to believe that he wanted you to burrow yourself deeper into him.
Ben inhaled deeply. âIâll hold you up to that.â

the empath and the eldritch horror (3/5) - sparrow!ben x empath!reader
Summary: Alphonso and Jayme were dead. Sloane was kidnapped. Ben was supposed to be Number One. He just didn't know whether to feel more at ease or challenged that the little Empath wouldn't stop crossing his mind and path.
Word count: 4.7k
Warning: fluff, kinda angsty, language, smut (mutual masturbation, unprotected vaginal sex)
Author's note: This series is officially back in progress đ I would have dubbed this chapter as part of the i'm not done arc, but you guys wanted this to be chronologically included in the series. So, this is between chapter one and two and is set during episode 4.
I don't know if this was the best smut I ever wrote, but it's been a long time since I wrote something sexual. At least, it feels very teasing. So, not a lot has changed between those two.
I was so scared of not writing enough for this chapter, but look at this 𤣠Still, feels like filler though.
Please don't think too hard on this ability đ It kinda reminded me of Emma Frost or a Succubus. đ
Please please please for the love of God write a small comment or reblog this.

~ Ben POV ~
This wasnât happening. He was supposed to be Number One. To lead the Sparrows and do a better job than Marcus ever did. And show his dad that demoting him was the worst mistake he ever made.
Now Alphonso and Jayme were dead. And Sloane probably too. Or detained if they were so lucky. Ben didnât trust the Umbrellas not to do something rash.
Ben just didnât see the old man coming. The Umbrellasâhe could take care of them. They were replaceable and stupidly tried to avoid conflicts they knowingly provoked.
Damn amateurs. If it werenât for the little one and ⌠Eight.
Speaking of the little EmpathâŚ
Ever since Fei and him debriefed their dad about the absolute mission failure, Ben couldnât just let it go. Even after a few hours, his feet led him back, hoping to get a glimpse of the walking firebomb. What he saw instead surprised him, although it shouldnât have.
The Empath who had been elusive during the fight. Or plain massacre as he liked to call it since pulling the wildcard out of nowhere felt like a foul trick.
Ben wouldnât have minded seeing you in action again. Maybe he would have pulled you to the side and watched how you reacted to his tentacles making an appearance.
Ben didnât get to really see you in action when you and your family first arrived at the Academy. At least, not personally. Still, he loved replaying the scene of you using your powers against Marcus in his head. Served him right for thinking you would be an easy target.
Before his mind would get sidetracked again, his eyes followed you as you were taking a stroll in the bright of day. Ben leaned his shoulder against the brick of a shop, hoping to appear inconspicuous every time you looked around.
Smart girl for remaining vigilant after the death of two Sparrows and being trapped in a timeline you werenât supposed to be in.
Ben passed the civilians on the sidewalk, zeroing in on the figure wearing the bright summer dress under the jean jacket. If he wasnât who he was and your family hadnât just killed two of his siblings, he would think you were cute. Still, Ben shook his head to ward off those wayward thoughts.
He pretended inspecting the display of books in the window of the shop, watching you linger near the clothes rack out of the corner of his eye. Ben crossed his arms, facing the bestsellers again.
He was still debating with himself what to do with you once you were within reach. He would consider it fitting to kidnap youâagainâas your family didnât see anything wrong in holding Sloane prisoner.
Benâs gaze slid to the sidewalk againâto find it empty. He furrowed his brows. Being on the lookout for the little Empath who probably intended to play a trick on him by spying on him from around the corner, like the little she-devil she was. His suspicions rose with every step he took, cautiously walking to the spot you harbored previously. His head swiveled around. But there was nothing out of the ordinary.
It was like you had turned into a ghost, turned invisible when he wasnât looking. Ben narrowed his eyes, listening to the soft breeze shaking the leaves in the trees. Feeling it ruffle through his hair.
Something soft brushed against his shoulder, giving off the illusion of a phantom touch. Ben grumbled, shrugging his shoulders to get rid off the feeling. A slow, tingling sensation wandered from his shoulder to his neck, leaving goosebumps in their wake. With a careful motion, Ben turned his head, finding nothing that would stir his interest.
He felt it before the voice whispered into his ear. âAre you doing something youâre not supposed to be doing?â
Ben turned his head to where the voice came from. Instantly knowing it was yours. Too many thoughts were rushing through his heads, like how you were doing this. Instead, he chose a direct approach when he spoke to the invisible form. âIâm not playing your little mind games.â
Your voice shifted around him with every movement when you said snarkily from behind, âNo? Are you more into the stalking game?â
Ben scoffed and shook his head. âIâm not. Thatâs ridiculous. You think youâre so special?â
âAnyone ever tell you that youâre a bad liar?â
Ben shook off the shiver he got from you whispering so intimately into his ear. He ground his teeth. âDepends. Do you always want to be right?â
His fingers twitched the longer you remained quiet.
âIâm sorry. I heard what happened.â
The mere reminder let heat rise in his cheeks. Ben clenched his jaw. He didnât need your compassion or your comfort. He just couldnât let his guard down around you. If you were anything like your family, you would use your charms to distract him and gain the upper hand before he could blink.
âSorry that you werenât there to kill my family yourself?â He shook his head derisively and snapped his fingers like he just remembered something. Not caring that he probably appeared like a crazy person just talking to air. âRight. I forgot. An Empath who doesnât use her powers to hurt or even kill people. What good are you even for, Number Eight?â
The voice of his father echoed in the back of his head, haunting him. Bringing to mind all the times he committed a grave faux pas during training or didnât behave in a way which was becoming for a Sparrow. Every second of silence from your end made him want to take it all back. But there was not a chance he actually would.
You slowly turned visible in front of his eyes. Ben had to blink at seeing the softness in your eyes.
âWhat do you want, Ben?â You said wearily.
Ben smirked, his eyes shifted into something lifeless. âMany things. Why donât we just start with justice?â
You sighed. âKill him, you mean? We donât get all the things we want in life.â
Recognition lit up his eyes. âSo, you know that man.â
You exhaled almost with disappointment. âSo, Iâm dealing with More vindictive Ben. Lucky me, huh?â
Ben narrowed his eyes. âYou actually think your family wouldnât have to face the consequences for what happened?â He hissed through his teeth.
âWhen will this end, Ben?â She inquired tiredly.
âThe moment when you guys accept your fate. You escalated the situation in the first place.â He gestured with his hands the causality. âEscalationâconsequences.â
âSomeoneâs looking at this from a very black and white agenda. We can end this right now. No one has to die for people to accept you as a formidable leader.â
Ben leaned towards you. âThereâs no psychoanalyzing me while Iâm threatening you. Give me what I want and maybe Iâll be a bit lenient with you.â
âThat was you threatening? Do you know that your idea of threatening feels a lot like flirting?â
He covered his ears. âDonât put words in my head, little demon.â Ben sighed. His eyes met the diner around the corner and instantly tried a more casual approach. âYou hungry?â
You waved your arms. âStill just an emphatic illusion who canât eat or drink like this.â
Ben smirked, hoping to tempt you a bit. âYou could just come out with your real body, you know?â
âAnd have you kill me? Thatâd be difficult to do since Iâm taking a bath right now.â Without waiting for him, you already walked ahead.
Ben lingered a few seconds, slightly distracted from the image you painted in his head. âLittle demon,â he muttered before entering the diner after you. They took their seats by the window before he ordered himself a milkshake and a burger with some fries.
Ben decided to pick up the conversation where you left off. âWhat makes you think I want to kill you?â
You placed your arms on the table between you, leaning forward. âThen explain why you were following me.â
He shrugged. There were some things he didnât want to consider what he wouldâve done if he had encountered you for real.
âAre you sure you werenât trying the same thing by kidnapping me ⌠again? Your sister is safe, in case you were wondering. Well, more or less. Allison is not the safest bet. But Sloane has Luther keeping her safe at least.â
âWell, that doesnât ease my mind, in case you were wondering. You people donât have the best track record when it comes keeping your promises.â
âRight. Takes one to know one.â
He grumbled to himself before leaning back against the plastic cushions. He ignored the presence of the waitress who brought his order and felt himself frown at your expression.
âHe says âthank youâ,â you stated with a self-asserted air, eyeing the server before sending him a harsh glare.
âThank you,â he murmured barely above a whisper.
The moment when she was gone, he could finally relax. Feeling grateful for the little moment of privacy again.
The smirk tugging on your lips didnât set his mind at ease. âJust so you know, only you can see or hear me right now.â
Ben rolled his eyes at your little deceit. âOnly me?â
âI would need to concentrate real hard to reach other people, but yes. Iâm in your head, Ben,â you whispered huskily.
Ben dug into his burger, relishing in the taste and instantly noticing your expression. âCome on, I know you want to try this. Get out of that bathtub, dry yourself off and just have a taste.â He absolutely loved the idea of knowing something else about you which he could use to his advantage.
You eyed his ordered food with a gleam in your eyes. âAs much as this is tempting, maybe I donât trust you right now.â
He scoffed loudly. âAnd kill you in a diner? Donât be ridiculous.â Ben rolled his eyes. He rubbed his stomach and mused, âJust look at this delicious milkshake.â His hand slid the drink to the middle, hoping to allure you with a small indulgence. âYou forget, ever since you were with us Sparrows,â he crooned mockingly, âI know you love food.â
It surprised him when you just chuckled. âThatâs your idea of torture? Should I feel flattered and special enough that I was noticed by the great Ben Hargreeves?â
Ben narrowed his eyes, scoffing. âSomeone thinks so highly of themselves.â
âOf course you would say that.â You smiled knowingly, leaning your chin on your hands. âYou like me.â
âSure, keep talking, little Empath.â
A dreamy expression lingered on your face. âYou do, itâs actually quite nice. I managed to tame the brooding Ben.â
âIâm not brooding,â he mumbled defensively under his breath.
âYou are. And thatâs why you like having me around. You enjoy my company. You know Iâm the only one that doesnât hold you to the standards as the rest of my family, or maybe even yours. You like being Ben, with no expectations. Asshole Ben, mean Ben.â You smiled with that wide smile on your face, almost happy at the thought. âGrumpy Ben.â
He shook his head, snorting. âWhatever. Just go bother someone else.â
You pouted. âDamn it. I was this close,â You pressed your fingers together. âTo get over here.â With that, the illusion evaporated.
Ben felt the corners of his mouth twitch at your little moments of cheering him up before a titillating sensation started on his shoulder. Slowly, it went further towards his neck when he felt your hand stroking the sensitive skin.
âStop that,â he grumbled. It was only half as fun if he couldnât even see you.
You merely chuckle in response, letting your breath tickle against his ear.
Ben exhaled heavily when he closed his bedroom door behind him. After the shower he just had he dried off his hair with a towel and mindlessly threw it into the hamper in the corner. Ben pulled down his shirt until the material covered his torso and found his respite when he lied back on his bed, closing his eyes.
Sloane was back and they got the bodies of Alphonso and Jayme. So, that was a small win. If one could call it that. To gain their edge back, Ben passed on the ultimatum to the emo kid and the big ape. At least there were some good things that happened during this shitty day. Bumping into you kinda worked in his favor. Sometimes he wished he could get a better read on you when you didnât wear your heart on your sleeve.
Ben exhaled heavily.
âSo, this is your bedroom, huh?â
Ben felt like he was going insane. First, his mind wandered to you and now you materialized like that. He certainly hoped this wasnât one of your abilities. To have someone think of you strongly enough and you would be conjured like a demon.
Ben opened his eyes, turning his head toward where your voice came from.
It felt like you were haunting him, Ben realized when he saw you sitting on the side of his bed, scrutinizing your surroundings. âItâs very you. Like the poster of yourself.â Your voice turned deeper, mocking him with your impersonation. âHey, Ben. Youâre absolutely awesome. Donât listen to the others.â
Your eyes met the display of books near his bed, quietly chuckling. âAnd you called Marcus a nerd,â you commented with a normal voice again. âSomeoneâs an artist, huh? Arenât you full of surprises?â As much as your delighted smile soothed him, Ben couldnât take any chances. Before you could mock his means of recreation, Ben tried to divert your attention.
âWhat are you doing here?â
You shrugged, sending him a cheeky expression over your shoulder. âWhat? You chose to stalk me and I canât return the favor?â
After your afternoon together, Ben could admit with recognition that if he narrowed his eyes just enough, he could see your figure almost emanate that golden shimmer. As you projected yourself across the city to play tricks on him again.
Ben sat up, not appreciating your little games to get to him. âThis is different.â
You leaned forward with a glint in your eyes. âWhy? Is this too personal for you?â
âYouâre damn right it is. You donât see me rifling through your stuff in that crappy hotel.â
You narrowed your eyes with understanding, smiling to yourself. âBut you want to. Youâre so weird, Ben.â
Why did he feel the need to defend himself? âItâs not weird. Itâs called being vigilant and careful. And stop invading my head.â
You rolled your eyes. âOh please, you would know if I was in your head. Youâre just such an easy person to read once youâve deciphered all the little clues.â
Ben waved a hand, not needing the reality check that he was easier to analyze than you were. Not needing to know that you could use it to your own gain if you should choose to.
âFine, youâve made your point. Now leave.â
With an ease, you stroked your hair to the side. For a second, he hated himself for finding you beautiful with that dim lighting hitting you just right. Benâs fingers itched to feel that graphite at his fingertips just from watching you. He saw the outline of a tattoo on the back of your neck and detected a few lines, feeling eager to get a better view to perceive it in all its splendor.
Ben cleared his throat, turning his head away.
âIâm sorry, youâre right. I was just trying to tease you.â
A mocking smile grew on his lips. âWhatever, I donât care. My command still remains. Now, shoo, evaporate. Whatever it is you do.â
You rolled your eyes. âJesus, youâre so grumpy in the evening. I thought your mood would be better, with Sloane being back, and everything.â You inched closer on your knees, intending to move away.
âYouâre the one making me grumpy,â Ben snarled.
âSure, I am.â
Ben narrowed his eyes, watching you try to scoot over the edge of his bed by picking the longer route. He groaned, throwing his head back.
âYouâre so annoying.â Ben felt his abdominal muscles tense when your fingers held on to his stomach for support. He eyed the hands bracing against him, more surprised by the sensation of your touch than your willingness to get close to him.
Ben furrowed his brows while muttering quietly under his breath, âI thought youâre just an illusion.â
Wariness spread on your face. Probably wondering why he wanted you to stay. To be honest he didnât know either. âI am.â
âThen why can I feel you?â
The shrugging of your shoulders seemed almost timid in nature.
âMy body works in mysterious ways, Number Two. Letâs just say, I can make it as real as possible. Make you believe Iâm touching you even when Iâm not really here.â
There was something electrifying and addictive about being close to you. Once a greedy thought hit him, Ben leaned forward. His gaze was hypnotized by your mouth, finding it utterly tantalizing. He licked his lips before staring into your eyes again. âItâs Number One, actually.â
Ben was giving some seriously tempting vibes. His eyes gleamed darkly as he watched your face. You swallowed thickly, feeling his hands teasingly stroke your hips, almost like he was trying out the feel of your corporal form. You felt the tingling sensation from his touch, like the feeling was your own. It was like touching something real, but the surreal feeling still followed.
You eyed his luscious lips, whispering, âPity. Kinda liked calling you Number Two.â
His breath exhaled against your lips. âI think you like calling me Ben more.â
âSometimes I like you even more when youâre not talking at all,â you whispered, trying not to sever this spell you both were under. Hoping not to break this rare moment of this bond.
Something twinkled in Benâs eyes with the spoken challenge that followed. âThen give it your best shot in shutting me up, little Empath.â
Everything inside you tingled like you were experiencing a new sensation. Stroking his cheek, you carefully traced the scar on his cheek, watching Benâs pupils dilate until his eyes were pitch-black. Absolutely loving how dark his eyes could get. Ben almost mesmerized you with his ability to not turn away from you, silently watching your every move. You told yourself you were merely curious, to find out how this would feel like. To enhance your abilities. While your body laid in bed and your spiritual being was sitting in Benâs lap, enjoying his ministrations.
Before you could talk yourself out of it, your lips met his. Involuntarily, your throat let out a whimpering sound, adoring the softness of his lips. You closed your eyes, opening your mouth to let your tongue dance with his.
There was a low rumbling sound in Benâs throat. Your fingers stroked through his wet hair, massaging his scalp with your fingernails. His hands tightened around your waist, hiking up your shirt.
You heeded his silent command by unbuttoning your chemise until you were only clad in your bra underneath.
Impatiently, Ben yanked off his shirt, revealing his naked torso. While he showed his physique, he teased with a smirk, âYou know, you could be here right now. Get out of that damn bathtub.â
âNot in a bathtub. Iâm laying in bed right now.â
It could be said that Benâs upper body was too distracting for his own good. You groaned, finding it hard to concentrate. âWhy do you have to look so good?â You felt compelled to stroke his rippling abs, delighting a bit in his small groan and feeling it reverberate in your whole body.
Ben was seriously making it hard for you not to like him. Or at least his body did the work in making you feel something for him. The longer you rubbed Benâs chest, your clit started to throb wantonly with need.
âYouâre welcome.â Ben spoke huskily, smirking arrogantly. âTell me what youâre wearing right now,â he said, losing his casual pants in the process.
You let yourself get swept away by him as you discarded your short pants down your legs. âJust in my underwear,â you teased with a small smile.
âSaucy minx.â Ben started chuckling arrogantly before pulling you close at the back of your head while pressing open-mouthed kisses against your lips. âAre you touching yourself?â He panted against your mouth. A startled noise came from Benâs throat when your hips rubbed teasingly against his crotch. You felt your sex clench when that sound shifted into a moan of appreciation.
You nodded. âYes.â Feeling the hardness in his boxer briefs with every movement of your gyrating hips.
âSay you want me to touch you,â Ben whispered against your lips before letting them wander sensuously towards your neck, making you go crazy with want with every breath he emitted against your skin. Leaving wet kisses behind.
Oh God why did he have to entice you so bad?
A whimper released from your throat as you tried to relieve the pressure by rubbing against his hardening crotch. You nodded mindlessly.
âUse your words. Say please.â
You rolled your eyes, shoving him backwards until Ben snorted with laughter. With his unruly hair spreading on his pillows. His hands didnât let go of your hips, instead let them roam and touch whatever he could get in contact with. Ben licked his lips and watched in fascination as your fingers unlatched one of his hands and slid it underneath your panties. Letting your wet juices coat his fingertips. Ben could only groan at the sensation of your arousal like it was some tangible proof for your carnal need towards him.
You leaned forward, brushing your lips against his neck while sucking on a sensitive spot. âPlease, Ben Hargreeves, Number One, oh great Cthulu, just finger me.â
His fingers moved in circles around your swollen clit while his other hand kneaded your covered bottom, making you gasp and rub against him. Needing to feel more of him. Craving more of that delicious tug from your dripping cunt. You absolutely could stay in this moment forever with Benâs fingers slipping beneath your panties and palming your butt.
âYou know, I donât feel very appreciated with your sarcasm,â Ben grumbled against your throat. To prove his point, he completely let go of you by placing his arms behind his head, relaxing further on the pillows. âShow me then. Maybe Iâll do you a favor later, if I feel like it.â
You rolled your eyes, unceremoniously dropping your panties. âYouâre such an asshole.â
âAs you keep telling me.â Ben drew out his hardened cock out of his boxer briefs, tucking the material around his waist. His gaze never left yours while he started massaging his member.
What a cheeky jerk he was for making you work for it.
Kneeling down at the edge of his bed, you made sure that Ben had a clear view while you drew circles on your clit. Just the debauchery of it all instilled you with a deeply sensual and gratifying sensation. You licked your lips, feeling your breathing pick up the longer you stared into his eyes.
Ben was enjoying your little show immensely and threw his head back while not losing sight of you. Your eyes zeroed in on his Adamâs apple when he swallowed. Ben smirked salaciously, breathing heavily. âBut you like me.â
Keeping your eyes closed, you threw your head back. âJust stop talking.â You could only depend on your sense of hearing as Benâs hard member made slippery noises while he kneaded it furiously. Feeling the heat in your body grow, you yanked down the straps of your bra until you were entirely nude.
The silent stare from Ben stopped you in your tracks, feeling nervous all of a sudden.
âGet over here,â Ben exhaled a breath. He dragged down his underwear, throwing it on the floor.
Slowly, you crawled over to him until you were sitting in his lap again, with your fingers sweeping his hair from his forehead. However, that content feeling which filled you at the touch he allowed was short-lived when Ben propelled you underneath him.
You gasped and your eyes widened at Benâs unexpected move. Slinging your thighs around his waist, you let out a hum, enjoying the feeling of your legs rubbing against him. âSomeone really canât stand to be on the bottom, huh?â
âBe quiet,â Ben hissed before he slowly thrust inside you.
You sighed deeply, tightening your hands around his shoulders for support. A whimper released from your lips when Ben pulled you closer to him. With every single thrust, he slid even deeper when he held your legs against his chest.
The veins in Benâs neck protruded with the exertion he committed, letting out quiet moans the more you clenched around him, losing yourself in the sensations of bliss. Not realizing that the spot where you touched him began to glow with golden energy,
Benâs hips stuttered, clenching his fingers around your thighs. âOh shit.â He opened his eyes in astonishment when in an almost serious voice, he said, âDo that again.â
You did it unintentionally. Licking your lips, you felt uncertain, having never done this before during sex. You gasped when Ben hit a certain spot, making your walls clench before your fingers brushed against his neck. Just like that your own emotions were bleeding into him, projecting your ecstatic state onto him. Enhancing those sensations tenfold for him.
You grew even wetter if that was possible once the sounds of Benâs blissed-out groans hit your ears. Obscene sounds of your groans and bodies slapping together filled the room. Your sex clenched around him like a vice.
His hips faltered before he panted heavily. âTell me youâre close.â
Throwing your head back, you nodded with a humming sound, pulling him close until Benâs lips were on yours. Suddenly you felt your body shimmer with ecstatic energy before a soundless moan came out of your mouth. Warmth spread through your whole body.
As soon as your emerging orgasm erupted, your eyes adjusted to the changing surroundings of the hotel room your body was actually lying in and Benâs bedroom. The illusion you tried to uphold kept flickering until your consciousness was pulled back underneath Ben.
The first thing you focused on was the sound of Ben groaning while his face contorted into a confused frown every time you flickered back to him.
You felt him pull out of you before something wet squirted against your skin when Ben ejaculated on his lower stomach. âOh fuck.â Ben leaned back with exhaustion, trying to catch his breath.
You chuckled, relaxing next to him and enjoying the view of a Ben whose cheeks were heated from the strain and who stretched out his limbs, needing a few seconds before he would be himself again.
You laid down on your front, letting your fingers dance on his warm skin. And maybeâjust a tadâyou wished you couldâve had the real thing just now. âI like speechless Ben.â
Ben let out hoarse chuckles before he turned his body away to clean himself up with a tissue. He pulled up the sheet until it covered the two of you again. You still thought it was sweet of him despite the knowledge of not needing the added warmth.
Benâs body language certainly was more at ease as his bones stretched out. He raked a hand through his messy hair and let out a sigh when he gave you an uncertain look. Ben opened his mouth to speak.
Before he could mess it all up, you shushed him by placing a finger above his lips. âNuh uh, donât ruin it. You were either going to say the sweetest thing ever or utter something hurtful just because you canât handle intimacy.â
Ben was taken aback when you leaned towards him to have one last taste of him since this would remain a one-time thing.
The moment your lips were no longer on his, Ben shook his head before commenting, âYouâre fucking confusing.â
