a poem for the end of the world
the end of the world is near
and i haven't much to say
it's as if all my thoughts and woes
the thought of mama's dying
and pa's and sister's too
much like mine doesn't you
the grass will soon be nothing
like your favorite story told
and all the books you've never read
the thoughts you have don't matter
much like your daring acts
the record books are burning
the clock reads seven thirty
but that seems awfully soon
i don't believe it's happening
i'm not yet finished painting
it's hard to keep on toiling
but i think i'm on to something
the portrait goes like this:
the flea is somewhere in there
