#shellshock lullaby

The most intriguing part of Shellshock Lullaby’s recent release is that the songs were written by Nelson in his early twenties. Nelson revisited the songs half a decade later and recorded the eight tracks that now appear on his full-length album, A Lighter Shade.

With a sound reminiscent of mid-2000’s alternative bands like The Friday Night Boys and Forever The Sickest Kids, Shellshock Lullaby has a sound that is unique, yet familiar enough to get stuck in listeners minds. The album takes a few listens to hit home, but once it does, it hits hard.

“Backwards” is a catchy acoustic singalong about wanting to start over but not knowing where to begin, while “All I Need” is a stark call-out that somberly mentions a person who’s not worth fighting for anymore.

Nelson shows off a beautifully crafted fingerpicking chorus in the passionate “Crimson Skies,” before diving into “Without Serendipity,” a song  with brilliant tambourine shakes and overlaying lyrics.

Shellshock Lullaby gives listeners comfort in knowing that their experiences are real and valid. With stories about feeling alone, helpless, empowered, and then eventually alright, Nelson uses his voice to shed some light on personal situations and make people feel like things will get better along the way.
