The Sheksna River is an important part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway (formerly the Mariinsky Canal System), draining the south-eastern part of Lake Beloye. The Sheksna was a small service steamer that belonged to the Ministry of Communication and Transportation.
The first photo shows a sailor giving a parting blast on the steam whistle on the pilot deck. The captain of the Sheksna is to the right, with other crew members at the pilot wheel. In the background is the Rybinsk harbour, with boats and barges anchored on both sides of the river.
