“It was a violent crash,” said Cliff Coleman with the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.
Fort Hood officials confirm the aircraft was one of AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.
“Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts,” said Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, “Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information.”
The helicopter crashed in a field off Dove Hollow Lane. Farm to Market Road 2843 is currently shut down near the site of the crash.
The crash sparked a grass fire in the area and several homes in the area were evacuated. “This is a large fire that is out of control,” Coleman said.
The Texas A&M Forest Service is at the scene of the fire.
