The Rio de Janeiro Marine Aquarium (AquaRio), has given a fun twist to the naming of the first female reef shark (Triaenodon obesus) born in Brazil. After a public naming contest, the little shark was dubbed "Sharkira" on April 17. 🦈

The winning name is a playful mix of "shark" and Colombian singer Shakira, and it managed to top other suggestions like "Ayla" (14.3%), "Lady Gaga" (9.5%), "Gaia" (6.9%), and "Natalina" (5.6%).

At four months old, Sharkira measured 65 cm and weighed 1.2 kg when she was born. Now, she’s 70 cm and 2 kg, growing steadily and displaying the usual nocturnal and feeding behaviors typical of her species.
