I think the hardest part of following the advice to “be myself” is that I’m not always the same self.
I create different versions, snapshots, representations of who I am for the different people in my life. They’re all still me, they’re not lies, they’re just different.
So which one do you mean when you say “be myself”? The version I made for one on one conversations, the one I made for group situations, the one I made for you?
I’ve decided that “be myself” is rubbish advice and that if you ask me what to do I’ll say “do whatever you normally do. It’s worked so far”.
I don’t know if that’s any better advice but it’s a comfort I’d like to hear.
