She got her start as a graphic designer. She says she always adored bold and expressive typography. And she began her journey into lettering about two years ago. • I personally, am always drawn to groovy, 70s style, curvy lettering which is why her artwork caught my attention. Sydney left her full time job as a graphic designer just 3 months ago! She is now a full time freelance creative. 😄 • Sydney said her favorite project so far has been her "Badass in Bloom" piece. It was a personal project and its psychedilic style ended up influencing many of her new pieces. She'd love to do more mural projects this year as she loves the idea of seeing the details of her work on a large scale. • You know the drill by now! Artwork by @jamescoffmandesign. • Good morning everyone! 👋 Or evening or afternoon or sweet dreams wherever you are. It's 7:30am here in Austin, TX on Friday. Brooke @seaofthesunsurfer here (founder of Goodtype) taking over for a third day! Thanks for having me. • My first selection of the day is James Coffman who grew up in Portland, OR and recently migrated down to the Bay Area, just north of San Francisco. James would say he's an artist with a focus on design. I would say he's a brilliant type designer as well. He also does photography and pottery. • James actually went to school to play baseball where played professionally in Arizona for a few years. When he finished, he didn't really know what to do so he began painting and went back to school. He chose to study design because, to him, it seemed like a practical art. He loved it and took to it pretty quickly. After his junior year, a professor asked James, "Why don't you just go for it?" And so he did! After that term, he dropped out started his own studio which has been only 6 months now. • He recently finished his 8th font called "Terlingua" which was inspired by old hand welded iron signs. He tends to enjoy rebuilding old lettering into functional typefaces. Swipe to have a look at some of my favorites! • He now runs his independent studio full time and is available. Artwork by @taknaprimer. • Hi there!👋 Me again! @brookethesunsurfer or @seaofthesunsurfer Goodtype's founder taking over this week to share with you some artists that have intriqued me. • Tanya Kochneva aka Taknaprimer (in Russian it means "so, for example") is from Krasnogorski, Moscow region, Russia. Tanya says it's famous for being the home of the Russian camera brand, Zenit. • Tanya has been a graphic designer for the past 10 years. Having done logos, brand identity, advertising and paper goods as well as web design, she is now introducing lettering and calligraphy into her work. • Her style of lettering is what caught my eye. It is very unique and recognizable. I noticed it popping up on the feed a few timse and recognized it was her work immediately. Because I see all kinds of letters every single day, it impresses me when someone can standout. When they've honed their letters to a particular style unlike anyone else. Unfortunately, there is a lot of uniformity on the feed nowawdays. Tanya does a great job of separating herself from the rest. • Which is impressive considering she just began the practice of lettering last year! And even later introduced the practice of calligraphy in the form of online courses, master classes and self-study. She remembers making postcards as a child and is now very excited and inspired to develop her hand at lettering and calligraphy. • She is an indepedent designer and available for hire. She is eager to work on any kind of lettering projects as well as logos, logotypes, identity and paper products. It's me Brooke @seaofthesunsurfer and founder of Goodtype taking over as "Guest" Curator of the week! • Up next is Rafael Serra, a Type Designer and Lettering Artist from Porto, Portugal. I love Rafael's disctinct style and use of bold, defining shapes to create letters. He designs outside the box with his occasional offset tilts and squiggly "s." He's another lettering artist I would say sets himself apart from the rest, with a very recognizable style. • Rafael started as a Graphic Designer and said that his passion for typography and lettering came very naturally. He's been doing Graphic Design for 15 years and has been doing Typography for about 10 years. I asked him if he had any favorite projects and he said, "All of them!" :) • He is an independent designer and available for hire. I had to go check out his feed and was blown away by his consistant groovy illustration style and his magnificent use of type. "Guest" is in quotes because I'm the founder, but haven't curated in quite sometime. Today is my third day taking over the feed sharing some artists with you. • My 2nd selection today is Monica Romain. Monica was born in New Orleans but moved to Raleigh, North Carolina to work full time. She is a full time Graphic Designer at Sokal, a full-service advertising agency working mostly with automotive clients. • Monica loved art and design as a kid. Growing up, she would draw, paint and sculpt! And she soon began dabbling in lettering in high school—drawing the names of bands and musical artists in her sketchbook, and practice drawing letters on her Wacom tablet and computer. She majored in Graphic Design in college and took her letter experiments to Micron pens (love those things). • Monica's dedication to her very eye pleasing color palettes makes for a lovely feed to scroll. I can't remember which post first caught my attention, but I soon began seeing consistent posts from her which stood out and made me want to see more. Robin was found as a newborn beside a gate in a rural village in China called Xinghua. 9 months later she would be adopted by what Robin says is an incredible woman from Brooklyn, NY. Robin's quest for her biological family continues. • Robin works full-time as a designer, letterer and illustrator at @colorofchange, a racial justice organization. She enjoys creating pieces that speak to identity and family and specifically adoption in her personal work. • Not only is she a talented designer and illustrator, she is also quite a talented illustrator with dynamic style.
