Edited to fix the colors, oops
Hey guys! So for the free space today, me and beloved/p Daydream decided to do another shared prompt. Go read theirs here! Hehehe, figured out the link thing >:) This is a bit of canon divergence from the StĂ„r TrÄk TĆG episode where Q became human
CW: hiccups, hiccups from hunger, hiccups that return, panicking, Ägere, hiccups from shock, abrupt ending possibly
Thank you for writing this prompt with me, @hiccuping-daydreams, ilysm /p đđ§Ąđđđđ
And without further ado, I give you the story! Enjoy!
Q awoke with a start, confused and afraid. Two things he never used to feel before. He sat up from the bed in the room he'd been trapped in, his stomach feeling weird. He didn't know how to describe it, maybe emptiness?
He looked around and noticed theâŠwhat was it again? Robot? Android? Tin can? They were all the same thing to him.
âA visitor, hmm?â Q smirked, thrilled to have someone to talk to, âI'd much rather have Pıcard, but I guess you'll do for now, robot.â
âI am not a robot,â DĂ„ta corrected him, âI am an android.â
âBah, same thing,â Q rolled his eyes as he paced around in his confined chamber.
DĂ„ta blinked and furrowed his brows, âno, Q, I do not think they are.â
âOh, whadduyou-â suddenly, Q was interrupted by a loud, âHULP!â
Q's eyes widened and he covered his mouth. He felt himself trembling as his heart began to race faster. He looked at DÄta, and the android recognized the fear in his eyes.
âWhat was-â Q paused as another, âHICKULK!â popped out of him.
His breathing picked up, slightly panicking. Was the room always this small? He needed more room, more space.
âQ?â DĂ„ta tilted his head curiously at the display.
âCall Pıcard,â Q pleaded, feeling lightheaded and afraid, âI think I'm HICK! I'm dyingâŠis this what HUCK! death is like? Miniature explo-HOLP!-explosions in my stom-ACH!â
âYou are not at any risk of death,â DĂ„ta tried to reassure him. âYou have the hiccups.â
âThe what?â Q's voice cracked as his breath was still labored and interrupted by the powerful spasms that were tormenting him.
âHiccups,â DĂ„ta repeated, âinvoluntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle, followed by a sudden closure of the vocal cords, resulting in a characteristic âhicâ sound.â
âHICKULK! please, get Pıcard,â Q pulled at his hair as he curled up.Â
âIt is unnecessary to-â
DĂ„ta froze when Q interrupted him in the most genuinely terrified whisper, âplease.â
The android unnecessarily sighed before calling for the Captain to meet them.
âThe Captain is on his way,â DĂ„ta informed him, kneeling down to his level, âthere is no need for alarm. You will be okay. The hiccups will pass. Just give it time.â
Q couldn't focus on what DÄta was saying. He just wanted Pıcard. Now the room was getting blurry? He closed his eyes and hugged his knees.
The doors opened and Captain Pıcard arrived.
âDĂ„ta, what's going on?â He asked, looking at the being that had been an agent of chaos throughout his trek.
âIt appears that Q is experiencing the hiccups,â DĂ„ta informed him.
Pıcard raised an eyebrow incredulously, slowly turning to DĂ„ta, âhiccups?â
âYes, sir,â DĂ„ta nodded, âhiccups, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle, followed by-â
âYes yes, thank you, DĂ„ta,â Pıcard interrupted him, âyou called me down hereâŠover a case of hiccups.â
DĂ„ta blinked, âI suppose I did. Q was requesting to see you immediatelyâŠhe seems extremely frightened.â
Pıcard's brows shot up in shock, âover hiccups?â
âIt appears so,â DĂ„ta nodded.
The captain tilted his head before turning to Q. He noticed the distant look of fear in his eyes as another hiccup jolted his head back. Pıcard walked over to the force field, âQâŠthis is Captain Pıcard.â
Q peeked up at the Captain through his tears. Pıcard's jaw dropped slightly. He hadn't been fully convinced that Q was being truthful about becoming human.Â
âLower the force field,â Pıcard requested.
âBut sir-â
âJust, trust me,â he said with no room for arguments.
They lowered the force field and Pıcard slowly walked up to Q as if he were a frightened wild animal. Pıcard sat down beside him, Q watching his every move.
âBreathe, you're okay, trust me,â Pıcard assured him, offering a hand.
Q's lip quivered and he threw himself at Pıcard. DĂ„ta prepared to reach for his phaser, but Pıcard held up his other hand, âremain in your position.â
Q was crying into Pıcard's chest as he hugged the captain, his hiccups increasing in speed and strength, terrifying him even more. If Pıcard didn't know any better, he'd say Q was acting childish. Though, he'd always thought Q was childish.
âShh, shh,â Pıcard attempted to soothe him, stroking his hair back and patting his back. âYou are not in any danger. You're safe here.â
Q shook his head, ânot safe HICKOLP!-â he whimpered and shut his eyes tightly, âI'm dy-INGK!â
âYou are not dying,â Pıcard told him, âyou just have the hiccups. It'sâŠa human inconvenience. I can assist in trying to cure them, but I need you to relax. Getting worked up is just going to make it worse. Can you try and take deep breaths with me?â
Pıcard demonstratively took a deep breath in through his nose and then slowly let it out through his mouth.Â
Q sniffed and sobbed, âI HULK! I can't do HOOP! it!â
âYes you can,â Pıcard encouraged, âQ, look at me.â It took a few moments but he eventually looked up at Pıcard with the most miserable look on his face. âI'm right here with you.â
âAs am I,â DĂ„ta called, making both Pıcard and Q startle. âSorry, I did not mean to startle you.â
âIt's quite alâright,â Pıcard's brows furrowed as he felt his own chest jolt with a silent hiccup.
Apparently, Q felt it too and backed away from Pıcard worriedly, âthey're HULGK! contagious? HINGK! I'm so-HUK!-sorry!â
âNo, it hmpk it isn't your hrmk fault KâQ,â Pıcard put a hand on his chest, jolting with more quiet hiccups. He turned to DĂ„ta, âDĂ„ta can you mmk please get us some waâter?â
âCertainly, I shall make a swift return,â DĂ„ta nodded and left the room.
Pıcard turned back to Q, âyou can nk come back tâto me, if you wish hilmk to calm down.â
He extended his arms. Q stared at Pıcard, or tried to, he'd kept pulling back by hiccups. He eventually crawled back over to Pıcard and hugged him.
âGood gooâood, now, listen nkâup!-oh,â he covered his mouth with his fist, keeping one hand on Q's back. Pıcard could hear and feel Q giggling quietly and he smirked, âwhat? You think this hu'up! is funny now?â
âSounds silly âGUP!,â Q covered his mouth, trying to hide his amusement.
Pıcard raised an eyebrow, âI sound si-ic!-silly? Impossiâble. You sound hup'k! silly.â
Q giggled and hiccuped, ânuh-HULP!-nuh-uh!â
Pıcard smiled, a giggly Q was much better than a terrified Q it seemed. But why? Q had randomly popped up to torment him and his crew constantly. He would always get in the way. Shouldn't he relish the fact that Q was terrified?
Pıcard had to admit, he did feel sympathy when he'd first seen Q in tears and shaking like a leaf. He imagined had this been the first time he was human and his body experienced something it hadn't before, he'd probably be a bit freaked out too.
As Q continued snuggling with him, them both sharing hiccups, Pıcard realized that maybe Q wouldn't be so bad as a human.
Especially with the smile and pleasant look on his face as he'd calmed down in Pıcard's hold. Something had shifted, it didn't seem like Q. This Q reminded him of a child. Not an adult that's childish, but a literal child. Was it possible that Q had regressed at some point?
Pıcard didn't know a lot about age regressıon. He personally hadn't experienced it, but he'd heard about it. One of the people on his old crew had been a regressÞr. Should he ask Q about it? Was this just because he was human? Or was this something he did even as the entity?
âCap-ULP!-in Pıcard?â Q looked up at him with innocent eyes.
âYes, hulp'k! Q?â Pıcard looked back at him curiously.
âAm I gonna HIUP! be ok?â Q still worried a bit.
Pıcard nodded and rubbed his back, âyes, himpkip!-mm. You're going to be hup! fine. See? They're harmless just hmp! annoying.â
âKay,â Q nodded, trusting him completely.
Pıcard smiled at him, âDĂ„ta should ulk! be back any minâany minute with that wa-huckuck!-water.â
âWhat's wat-URK! gonna do?â Q asked curiously.
âWell, it's ingk! going to cure me and hoâopefully cure you too-hugk'lk!-uh,â Pıcard explained.
âCure?â Q tilted his head.
âIt will make the hick! hiccups cease,â the captain made it clearer.
âOh? Make HILK! it stop?â Q's face lit up with hope.
Pıcard found it truly adorable, âyes.â
Soon after that, DĂ„ta returned with two glasses of water. âCaptain, here are the waters you have requested.â
âAh, yes, thank hiuk! you, DĂ„ta,â Pıcard reached up and carefully grabbed one of the glasses. âNow watch hmgk! Q, drink it like hip! this.â
Pıcard waited until Q was watching before slowly drinking the entire glass of water. He muffled a burp behind his lips and fist, waited a moment, then smiled.
âAnd voila, the hiccups are gone,â Pıcard patted his head. âWhew, good thing too. I was getting tired of my words being interrupted every few seconds.â
Q's eyes sparkled, âwhoooa, HURK! my turn! My HILK! turn!â
Pıcard nodded and handed DĂ„ta the empty glass in return for the full glass. Pıcard helped Q sit up, âI'll help you drink it, and remember, drink it slowly.â
âKay, Cap'n HUP! Pıcard,â Q nodded.
Pıcard tilted the glass into Q's mouth and helped him adjust to swallowing. After a rocky start, Q got the hang of it and soon enough the glass was emptied.
âAll done!â Q cheered.
âVery well done,â Pıcard nodded.
âNow what?â Q tilted his head.
âNow we wait and see if it worked,â Pıcard tapped his nose with his finger, making Q giggle slightly.
After a few moments, Q smiled, âthinkâŠthey're gone!â
âYou are correct,â Pıcard nodded.
âButâŠtummy still feel weird,â Q complained and held his stomach.
They all heard a rumble in his stomach.
âAh, it appears that you are experiencing hunger,â DĂ„ta explained.
âYes, you're hungryâŠhow about I take you to Deck 10 forward to get you some food?â Pıcard offered.
Q nodded, he would go anywhere Pıcard told him to as long as he was there with him. The captain nodded and stood up. He extended his hands to Q. The new human took his hands and stood up with a bit of difficulty. He hadn't known why he was feeling fuzzier and fuzzier, but it was a nice, warm feeling, so it hadn't scared him. But being this close to Pıcard helped and felt nice. He was being nice to him, a definite shift from earlier. Did he know what was going on?
Q looked at Pıcard, âCap'n Pıcard?â
âYes, Q?â Pıcard responded as he had prepared to start going to the particular deck.
â...d'ya know why m'soâŠfuzzy? And warm? And safe?â Q squeezed his hand.
âAnd younger, perchance?â Pıcard questioned.
âYounger? Dunno what that feels like,â Q tilted his head.
âI believe he is experiencing an age regressıon of some sort, sir,â DĂ„ta informed him, albeit a bit timidly. âQ might not have had a childhood, which explains why he would not know what younger means or feels like.â
Pıcard would ask about why he was shy about it later, but right now, his focus was getting Q some answers and some food.
âI came to the same conclusion, Mr. DĂ„ta,â he nodded to him instead before looking at Q again before explaining.
Q hung onto every word that Pıcard was saying.
âThe fear of the unknown must have triggered the regression,â DĂ„ta added.
âHow I stop?â Q asked curiously, not that he'd wanted to stop. Pıcard was being nice to him and letting him hold his hand and stay close to him.
âYou have to give it time,â DĂ„ta explained, âI advise you to enjoy it while it lasts.â
âKay,â Q nodded, then turned to Pıcard, âwe go now.â
Pıcard nodded and started leading him out of the room and towards a turbolıft. DÄta stayed in his spot until Q had requested he come along too. Q reached for DÄta's hand and the android accepted it with a small smile.
Q swung both their arms happily on the way to the turbolift, humming to himself. Pıcard smiled slightly in amusement.Â
The three of them made it to the turbolıft and went inside.
â10 forward,â Pıcard said and the lift moved.
Q squeaked and squeezed both Pıcard and DÄta's hands.
âIt is alright, you are safe with us,â DĂ„ta reassured him.
âDĂ„ta is correct,â Pıcard agreed, âno harm will come towards you here. There's no need to fear.â
Q whimpered and closed his eyes as the lift slowed to a halt and the doors opened.
âSee? We've arrived,â Pıcard pointed out and led everyone to the lounge.
Q looked around in awe. He gasped at the view of the stars through the window. Pıcard smiled at his reaction. He could feel Q tugging them to get closer to the window, looking at Pıcard with pleading eyes.Â
Pıcard nodded, looking at DĂ„ta, âMr. DĂ„ta, can you order something you think he would enjoy?â
âYes, sir,â DĂ„ta nodded and headed over to the bar where Guınan was tending.
Q giggled and led Pıcard to the window, putting his hands and face right on the glass. He watched the stars in complete awe.
âCap'n Pıcard! Look!â Q pointed at the window.
Pıcard smiled slightly, âI see, you enjoy watching the stars? Aren't they lovely?â
Q nodded, âprettyâŠâ
Suddenly Q's stomach grumbled and he whined as he gripped his tummy. Pıcard wrapped an arm around him and led him over to where DĂ„ta was waiting withâwait, how many ice cream sundaes?
âDĂ„ta, why did you order ten chocolate ice cream sundaes?â Pıcard questioned.
âWhat that?â Q's eyes sparkled as he tasted one of the sundaes. âMmmmm, s'good!â
As Q continued to devour all ten of the sundaes, Pıcard watched in complete shock.
âQ, maybe you shouldn't eat so much,â Pıcard warned a bit too late, âyou'll give yourself a belly ache.â
Q groaned as his tummy grumbled unhappily and he hugged his stomach, âuugghhhâŠtummy not happy.â
âI tried to warn you-â
âHULGK!-uggghh,â Q grunted uncomfortably. âCap'n it HUP! hurtsâŠâ
JeĂ„n-LĆŻc sighed, âalright, come on, let's visit sickbay. Perhaps Dr. Crvsher will be able to find something to assist with your stomach ache."
âHUCKULK!â Q covered his mouth with his hands.
âAnd those hiccups,â DĂ„ta included.
Pıcard nodded, âagreed.â
Q looked at JeÄn-LƯc and then DÄta and then hopped down from the bar stool and held out his hands to the others.
DÄta and Pıcard held his hands and headed towards sickbay.
Fin~
