I just watched the newest episode and it was honestly one of the loveliest things I have ever watched.. so I just want to share some of my thoughts on the series as a whole (so far) because I genuinely cannot get Shao peng and Zi xiang off of my mind.

Starting off: it’s really nice to see a well written character with a disability who isn’t infantilised! Throughout the show, Shao peng is displayed as being entirely independent, wanting to find his own work so on and so forth, and obviously, his mum is slightly concerned and the people around him do want to help him find work (but I’d put that down to the anticipated care of his loved ones), but he continually denies their offers and is determined to do it for himself! I love that so much!

In a similar vein, I really appreciated the scene shared between Shao peng and Zi xiang in the hospital in which basically Zi xiang made Shao peng aware of the fact that it is okay to ask for and need help because, at the end of the day, he has a disability and unfortunately the modern world isn’t entirely equipped to people with disabilities yet. It was a very important scene in the development of Shao peng’s character and seeing him talk with his parents and finally opening up even slightly was so heartwarming to see.

Parents of the year award goes to them for sure!

Zi xiang’s character development has also been very lovely to see after he met Shao peng! Seeing as he’s matured and chose to work harder to prove himself to Shao peng even when he didn’t have to has been so nice to see, and what’s been even nicer has been the fact that he is still himself! He is still the silly Zi xiang we met in the earlier episodes, except now he undeniably lovely through and through.

There’s a lot I could say about this series! About the fact the use of sign is so fluid and feels so natural in the narrative, and the way all of his loved ones learned it (at least to some degree).. or how important it is to have this representation, but for now I’ll just finish this by saying it is easily in my top 5 of 2024 bls! I think everyone should give it a go!
