Given Shadowrun is a tabletop game, each character sort of has a 'role'. Now the more characters that are added, the more 'roles' that appear. Of course, there are the 'NPCs'(in tabletop), but in the story they're more sub-characters that are still important that aren't on the main team(like Spanky, Mama, Grizwold, Dr. Douglas and Yasha, you'll meet them later too.)
They're sort of like an 'RPG team' in the story(maybe hopefully some day graphic novel/comicy!) type format, though they extend past your normal 'Fighter/Mage/Thief'. Since it's more cyberpunk, I think the roles usually fall a little different. I guess hmm, for fun I decided to break them down!
Downfall: One of the two brawlers. Talon also is a heavily martial arts based fighter, but I'd say Downfall is more a 'pure' brawler in the sense that he only uses his handguns if absolutely necessary, or his knife as a tool most of the time. His huge size makes him frightening as well; if brute strength is needed and cyberware is a no-go(it can be detected), he's the guy.
Jolt: Given that he's a decker; not too much of a fighter(though can if necessary), I'd say he fits the 'rogue' archetype a little more, with a side of 'techie', dealing with the teams' electronics needs. He likes staying in the shadows(since that's where he does his best work with his cyberdeck!)
Val: She's the 'wheelperson/wrench wench.' Any good team needs a getaway driver, and she doubles as that plus vehicle tech/vehicle mounted weapons. . I suppose she also triples since she also is good with demolitions.
Ortega: The gunner. His deal is mostly long-range weaponry of all sorts, though sniping is his specialty. He also knows some demolitions, explosives, and heavy weaponry, though while Val knows more vehicle-mounted weapons, Ortega is more knowledgeable in portable heavy weapons.
Silver: Being a mage, she's...the mage! Literally the mage. Though she has healing spells as well so she also sort of doubles as 'team doctor', when they actually need on the fly patch-ups(though most of the team knows basic first aid out of necessity.)
Talon: In a way he's the 'combat jack of all trades'. Good with guns(though not to Ortega's extent), excellent with melee weapons, but also about on Downfall's level with unarmed(though lacks his adept abilities), he's the heavily cybered sort of 'Loose Cannon' that when shit needs to die/be dealt with in really nasty ways, they 'let him loose' and look the other way. 'Loose Cannon' is probably the best way I can think to describe him.
Even the NPCs in the story have their little 'parts'. So yeah I guess in ways they do have a bit of the 'stereotypical RPG team' but in others they don't!
I need to get cracking on writing up the rest, but I was having a fun little info dump here where I was trying to fit them in some sort of RPG role.
Also I think I'll be discussing some of my old favorite sourcebooks soon!
