It will forever baffle me that HBO is making a LIVE ACTION show for BG3, rather than invest in an animated one that uses the official Larian designs.
Like, seriously, why risk this sort of thing when there was plenty of interest in an animated BG3 show when Larian was releasing these shorts for updates for the game?
You don't have to go looking for people who resemble these characters when you go with animation. You can either get the original voice actors back or get sound-alikes if they're unavailable. Besides, animation will age better than hit-or-miss CGI. If they didn't want to use the cartoony versions, they could go to the studio that is doing Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein. Hell, some of the elf designs make me think of Astarion as it is and you can't tell me Wyll and Gale wouldn't look downright gorgeous in that style.
Frankly, I'm probably going to pass on the show. It's rare for live-action video game adaptations to hit the mark (I think the only one I enjoyed was Twisted Metal, solely because of Sweet Tooth) and I'm not a live-action fan. I'm not worried about the storytelling since it's pretty much going to be someone's fanfiction of what happens rather than anything official since Larian doesn't seem to be involved.
I would KILL for an animated BG3 show on the same level as the shorts with more in-universe hijinks. I'm already bouncing off the walls from the animated Bloodborne movie that Jacksepticeye is overseeing.
