Oh, he remembers alright. After all, it hasn’t been terribly long now since the night that it happened, has it? Just a perigee or two, nothing more, and while he forbids the thought from crossing his mind too often there are still moments when he sits in his new hivestem unit, cheek cupped in his hand and eyes lingering on the little ones clicking away in the planter box on his window sill, that he can’t help but remember. It was just so… sudden. Kahdri was back from the dead after perigees of haunting Sevink’s nightmares, and he had already been angry with her for all of those days that he held his matesprit while he quaked and cried over her, mourning her death over and over every time she sent another cryptic message hinting at her survival. But then she had stepped aside and revealed Audrey, HIS Audrey, healed all wrong from nearly experiencing death and yet still there, still ALIVE, and he had been livid. He had been more angry and hurt in that moment than he had been in his entire life, and of course Sevink - sweet, supportive, loving, perfect Sevink - had swept him inside and tried to calm him down. But then when Aequus begged him to send her away, he…Ahh, he swallows thickly as he remembers that part. He can’t stop thinking about that hurt and imploring expression on Sevink’s face when he refused to send her away. It had been a moment of truth that he hadn’t seen coming, a ‘her or me’ scenario wherein he expected to be chosen over anyone and everyone else. They were matesprits, after all, and he’d never loved or trusted anyone like that before. When he said ‘send her away or I’m leaving’ he had expected only one, inevitable result.And it didn’t happen like he thought it would.That pained expression, worn by that face that still made his bloodpusher twist and bleed in his chest, still lingered in his mind like a ghost. The numbers had all been laid out in front of him, every variable standing between them and their ideal future together so easy to solve for, and then it all fell apart. Divided by 0, reduced despite all of its complexity and perfection to nothing but another piece of his past. He had his new hive, the last he would care to live in until he left Alternia for good, and he had fulfilled his obligations to the drones. Nobody would ever have to touch him again, not unless he wanted them to. And maybe he never would. Either way, he was still able to sit here and look down at his little ones in his windowbox garden, dining on their dinner of little flies and spiders, and try his best not to remember.
