Yes I can explain those as well.

1) The black flag I suppose you mean this one

This flag was created for 2014, and it’s a reference to 1714, the year that Spanish troops invaded Catalonia. They had Barcelona under a siege for one year, and in the end Catalans knew we couldn’t resist and win the war anymore since our allies had abandoned us (looking @ u britain -.-). At that point the Catalan resistance raised a black flag, which in war symbolism means something like “we know we’re going to lose but we will fight until we die anyways”. This black flag sometimes had “viurem lliures o morirem” (“we shall live free or we shall die”) or “vèncer o morir” ( “to win or to die”) written on it, and sometimes with a skull drawn in it.

This flag represents that spirit of resistance, and it combines the black flag + the star of the estelada + the 2 lines of Santa Eulàlia’s flag. Santa Eulàlia is the patron saint of Barcelona and her flag was held by the soldiers defending the city.

This flag became popular in 2014 with the 300th anniversary of the fall of Barcelona.

You can also see the “we shall live free or we shall die” one quite often.

If you mean a flag that is completely black, that is the anarchist flag.

2) The white one with a blue stripe and a red star: Galician independence.

This flag is known as estreleira. It’s not about Catalonia. It means independence for Galicia. You can see it in Catalan demonstrations waved by Catalans as a sign of solidarity to the Galician people, or by Galician people who come to hep us in our fight.

For the same reasons you can also see the ikurriña, the flag of the Basque country.

3) The purple estelada. This one is the feminist estelada, but it’s quite uncommon to see since for our mentality this is kinda included in the red estelada.
