The Jam
Setting Sons (1979)
The 4th studio album by the Jam was released on 16 November 1979.
Originally intended as a concept album about 3 friends who become estranged as they grow up, 21-year-old Paul Weller ultimately abandoned the idea, and Setting Sons retains only 4 songs of the conceived storyline ("Thick As Thieves", "Little Boy Soldiers", "Wasteland" and "Burning Sky").
The album reached a wider audience in the UK, peaking at #4 (the band’s highest chart position to date) and spending 19 weeks on the charts. The Jam appealed to a smaller audience in the US, with Setting Sons peaking at #137 in the US.
The only single from the album, “Eton Rifles,” was the group’s first Top Ten hit in the UK, peaking at #3.
