you were pleasantly surprised , the other day , that flayn seemed to have had a change of heart where you are concerned --- or , at least , seemed to have stopped taking stock in rumors . ( even those circulated by her brother , which were among the worst ones , honestly . ) but even more surprising than that was how she saw through your flirtations entirely , and twisted the conversation to her benefit . you're not sure whether to be impressed or baffled ( although a mix of both seems like it should fit ) but either way , you'd completely underestimated her . you hadn't minded her playing you like a fiddle , in all honesty --- you think you're definitely more impressed than baffled , if only a little . ( of course , growing up with seteth as her brother probably helped her learn how to twirl people around her little finger . ) ( you know he seems strict and harsh , but you can also tell that he loves flayn more than anything else , and that he would do anything for her . ) ( and that makes you sad , somehow . ) ( perhaps you mourn the brother you should have had . ) ( perhaps it doesn't make a difference . )
when you see her in the dining hall , seated alone , you decide that you'll eat with her --- if she'll allow it , of course . ( after all , who knows --- seteth might have come up with some other dastardly deeds for you to have reportedly done . ) so , you walk over to her , food in hand . ❝ i thought the world seemed just a little brighter when i came in here ! ❞ a charming smile , and a gesture at the seat beside her . ❝ are you waiting for someone to join you ? and if you're not --- may i ? i've always found that meals are better when i'm in the company of a lovely lady such as yourself . ❞
this one is different from the others. there’s a certain air of mystery about her, but odette isn’t the type to pry. not much, anyway. there are people that prefer to keep secrets hidden, herself being one of them. so she’ll keep herself from asking too many questions. at least nothing too personal. it’s not often that she decides to share her meal time with others, but in the name of socialization ( as well as curiosity ) she’s conceded to it this time around.
“ i thought my older brother was overprotective, but yours takes it to a whole different level, flayn. ” the archbishop’s adviser was something to say the least. strict and prickly. definitely not someone she’d ever want to be scolded by. still, she can’t help but get amusement out of the other girl’s constant fuss over his protective nature. it reminded her of her own brother. taking another forkful of food into her mouth, she hums contently. her gaze wanders back to other girl’s face, lips curling into a smile. “ pretty sure i wouldn’t have the same level of patience that you do. i don’t know how you manage it. ”

‘ it is saint cichol day, ’ though there’s something coy about the way she says it, with a gentle tap of her finger against her chin. ‘ ah... and your birthday as well, yes? ’ her eyes flit about, beyond him, beside them, and over her own shoulder, until she is satisfied there exists no one nearby to pry her for the words she speaks next, ‘ ...promise me we will have plenty more. ’
“One would hope you would remember your older brother’s birthday, Flayn.” It was merely a jest of course, playing along with her own. He sometimes wondered if being truthful about their day of births was cutting it a bit close to their secret, but so far there seemed to be little harm done. Receiving well wishes on a random date seemed an odd concept anyhow.
“I have no intention of leaving you to fend for yourself, don’t you worry... So long as you promise me we will be celebrating Saint Cethleann’s day for years to come. You know that I hold that day far dearer to my heart.”
his shoulder is gently prodded, though she spares no time waiting for him to turn around, instead leaning around him. hands are clasped behind her and she sports a cheeky grin to match. ' will you not join me for dinner? it is saint cichol day, you know. ' her eyes hold a spark that is blind to any passerby. it is a look only he would understand. the teasing nature of things is lost all too quickly, replaced with a softness and her voice sweetly states, ' i hear they are serving his favorite. '
truthfully, seteth isn’t necessarily happy with the idea of saint cichol day. it’s a bit too on the nose for his liking, and it’s not as though he was ever asked about it. he lets out an exasperated sigh to flayn’s imperceptible teasing. but then he smiles softly so. his birthday is such an inconsequential day to him, never making it out to be a big ordeal. still, it warms his heart in these cold winter days that flayn would remember and wish for a small celebration, ❝ i would like nothing more than that. ❞

a soft smile crosses your face and color rises on your cheeks as you return her hug . it has been quite some time since the last time somebody hugged you , truly , and you had expected to be --- well , slightly uncomfortable , if you're honest with yourself . but this is good . this is nice --- you have survived , and you will continue surviving , if only for times like these . it may take a while for you to start living for yourself , but until then --- you don't think it harmful to continue on until that point for the sake of others , for the sake of those who are happy you are still here . for the sake of small rays of light and happiness . yes , you think that sounds just wonderful . you glance down at her , smile widening , even if it is slight .
