So, I've seen all the Best Picture nominees but haven't had time to blog out the rest of the adventures. I will! I promise! For now I will give you my picks before the big show! So here we go. My picks and why for some of them.
Best Picture - Argo
This one is hard for me. Personally Les Mis deserves it, but Argo has won the Producer's Guild and the Golden Globe so it looks like it's pretty much a lock.
Leading Actor - Daniel Day Lewis
It's Daniel Day Lewis... enough said
Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz
Amazing performance! He is no doubt, clearly the best performance of 2012. I'm a little worried about Tommy Lee Jones though.
Leading Actress - Jessica Chastain
There's a single scene in Zero Dark Thirty that makes her the clear winner. I think they could give it to Jennifer Lawrence though, being Hollywood's IT girl right now.
Supporting Actress - Anne Hathaway
This one pains me. I've hated Anne Hathaway for so long. She seems like she's trying so hard to be this generations Julie Andrews, but her performance in Les Mis was second to none.
Animated Feature - Wreck-It Ralph
Better than I could have ever expected! Brave might win it though with Pixar's history at the Oscars.
Cinematography - Life of Pi
If you can make the most tragic shipping accident look gorgeous, you might deserve an Oscar
Costume Design - Les Mis
I have to go with what I know. I've heard it might go to Anna Karenina, but I didn't see it. Les Mis' was amazing enough to sway me to vote for it.
Directing - Lincoln
With Best Actor goes Best Directing. I would have voted for Afleck, but he's not nominated.
Documentary Feature - Searching for Sugar Man
Didn't get to any of the Doc's this year, going on what I've heard.
Documentary Short - Redemption
Same as above
Film Editing - Argo
Brilliantly blended modern-day and historical footage together. seamless.
Foreign Language Film - Amour
It's the only one nominated for Best Picture, logical choice.
Makeup/Hairstyling - The Hobbit
Those dwarves didn't get that silly looking on their own!
Original Score - Lincoln
It's John Freaking Williams, and it's beautiful. As beautiful as Life of Pi? We'll see.
Original Song - Skyfall
Adele, hands down will win this.
Production Design - Les Mis
The opening sequence alone deserves this. Throw in Javar's final scene and the alley shootout and this production couldn't look much prettier.
Animated Short - Paperman
When a five minute cartoon can make you cry with joy, it should win an Oscar.
Live Action Short - Buzkashi Boys
Haven't seen any, going with my gut based on a synopsis of each.
Sound Editing - Zero Dark Thirty
All those gunshots didn't just make themselves.
Sound Mixing - Les Mis
Live singing the entire film, it had to be mixed well.
Visual Effects - Life of Pi
I didn't know the Tiger was fake half the time until I read about it after the film. It's realism was beyond words...
Adapted Screenplay - Lincoln
These last two categories were the hardest for me to pick. The only one I could eliminate quickly was Beasts of the Southern Wild. In the end it was just a gut decision.
Original Screenplay - Django Unchained
Here's hoping the Academy likes hearing Tarentino make speeches as much as I do. I really would LOVE to see Moonrise Kingdom win this as it was a beautiful story, but I think Django has a better chance.
So, my wife and I have a little tradition. As soon as the Oscar nominations are announced we try to see every Best Picture Nominee. Usually this just consists of us catching the couple of films we missed during the year. This is the first year I know of that we have not seen any of the nine nominees. We have until February 29th to see the nine nominees for best film and any other movies we want to see to fill out the rest of the ballet.
Here's our schedule:
As you can probably figure out the Best Picture nominees are in bold. The rest of the films will fill out the Best Animated FeatureActor/Actress/Writing/Cinematography categories. Therefore, the bold ones are the only ones we have to see, but the rest we really want to, to fulfill our Oscar watching experience. This is the first year we might not be able to see a Best Picture nominee, due to Amour being impossible to find.
