Servamp Characters and Reading Habits
here are some headcanons I spent too much time compiling <3
Misono
Misono reads most among everyone heās acquainted with. Itās become a little less since he has other things to do with his days, but in the evenings or during the weekends or whenever he wants a moment to himself, he can be found with his nose in a book. A love of reading is inherent to any Alicein, but itās greatest in him.Ā
He will read any book he can get his hands on, but if asked heād say that his favourites are those from which he can learn something new. This can mean many things ā novels exploring strange countries or periods of history, non-fiction about topics he deems fascinating, or anything generally considered a classic. He also likes to read in foreign languages, to practice or to acquire new vocabulary.Ā
What he wants to learn about most, however, are the minds of his peers. He likes stories that explore their lives, and often seeks out the books that are popular among them ā just to see what all the fuss is about.Ā
Beyond entertainment and learning opportunity, Misono considers reading a way to connect with others. He loves discussing books with Lily, and will demand he read to him at night even as he grows into an adult. He makes a habit of reading all his loved onesā favourite stories. He also prides himself on his skill at picking out books for his friends.Ā
Some books Misono likes: Lonely Castle in the Mirror, All About Love, The Book ThiefĀ
Lily
Lily reads fairly much. Itās a nice and cosy pastime that can be indulged in from the comfort of a soft couch or in his favourite window seat, with a cup of coffee and a pastry nearby. Whenever heās not watching a movie, heāll be reading a book.Ā
His favourite stories are those that have something to say about love. Naturally this means he reads a lot of romance novels ā be they sweet or silly or sad or dark, he finds something to enjoy at the core of them all. He will read most other genres too, however, as long as thereās love at the core of the story.Ā
He likes a raunchy book, but heās particular about sex scenes and will skip them if the writing doesnāt suit his tastes. He also likes a book that is twisted or dark, and sometimes finds a certain catharsis in them. In stark contrast he goes through a lot of literature for kids and young adults as well ā his children (and Misono) frequently demand his services for Story Time, and he has yet to find the strength to deny them.Ā
When the opportunity presents itself, he will pick up whatever his Eve is reading at the moment, just to talk about it with him. Misono likes to get passionate about discussing his books, and Lily loves to see his passion (and also shared trips to the book store).
Some books Lily likes: This Is How You Lose the Time War, Half a Soul, Der Tod in Venedig (Death in Venice)
Licht
Licht doesnāt get many opportunities to read, but itās something he likes doing whenever thereās time to pass that he cannot spend on his piano. Most often he reads while travelling.Ā
He likes stories that have a certain whimsy to them. He likes fantasy thatās full of fun details and ā even better ā charming little creatures. He likes a cute animal companion. He also likes action and high stakes and a firm moral core at the heart of a story, even if it is one that challenges his own.Ā
Character-wise, he seems to gravitate to books that have pathetic, messy men in them. His Servamp doesnāt seem to be sure how to feel about that.Ā
He retains a great love for the book series that he devoured in his childhood, and will often go back to them. They are a familiar comfort that he welcomes especially when life around him grows hectic.Ā
He likes listening to audio books. Itās convenient while on the road, and allows him to do other important things at the same time, like playing with his nintendogs or kicking Hyde. Itās also reminiscent of how he first got to know the stories he loves ā as cassette tapes playing to him while he drifted off to sleep in his childhood bedroom.Ā
Some books Licht likes: Howlās Moving Castle, Tintenherz (Inkheart), any book in the āDie Drei ???ā (The Three Investigators) seriesĀ
Hyde
Like Licht, he reads mostly while travelling. He could read more during their free evenings, of course, but those are more often than not spent listening to his Eveās piano practice.Ā
Hyde reads for drama. He likes grand and epic tales that make him feel like punching the air. He likes stories of conspiracy and love and betrayal that read like the most delectable gossip imaginable. He likes a hypercompetent, larger-than-life protagonist to get obsessed with for a bit.Ā
In a similar vein, heās fond of the occasional celebrity memoir. Not all of them are to his taste, of course ā heās most prone to getting invested in the lives of people he considers exceptional, and not every celebrity fits the bill. The right memoir, however, provides both the juicy gossip and overexaggarated drama he so enjoys.Ā
He doesnāt mind a bit of purple prose, if done right. If an authorās voice is so ornate and beautiful, why should they hold back?Ā
Some books Hyde likes: The Name of the Wind, Carrie Soto is Back, The Third Gilmore Girl
Mikuni
Like his younger brother, Mikuni reads a lot and will be found pouring over a book whenever he has a moment to relax. He has much fewer of those, however, and is thus more selective about the books he reads.Ā
There are two types of stories he prefers above anything else. The first is profound literature that has some deep wisdom or a thorough examination of the human psyche to offer ā typically those will be classic or contemporary novels. The other is the most blasphemous smut in existence.Ā
Also in a similar vein to Misono, Mikuni reads for connection. To him, however, this means fighting people in deeply pretentious ways. He will be equally ostentatious about his highbrow literature and his blasphemous smut, and is unashamed of turning to online forums when no one is willing to have these conversations with him in real life (which is often).Ā
While most of Mikuniās literature opinions are a provocative show put on purely for his own entertainment, he is also a genuine snob when it comes to translations. He will read a book in its original language whenever he can, and complain ceaselessly when heās forced to pick up a translation. He also hates rewrites of any kind, though heāll always read a book before disparaging it.Ā
Some books Mikuni likes: Stories of Your Life and Others, The Picture of Dorian Gray, PriestĀ
Jeje
Jeje reads neither very much nor very little. He enjoys curling up with a book when he can get a quiet moment to himself, which is rare.Ā
One half of his reading materials is philosophical or theological literature. He often feels like there is much to question about the world that surrounds him and the way he thinks about it. A book wonāt change his outlook on life, but he appreciates having more perspectives to consider.Ā
The other half is books he picked up from the supermarket bestseller shelf while grocery shopping. Sometimes he just doesnāt want to think that much, and something light is just what he needs. Unlike his Eve, he has the ability to read a story without getting into a twist about every single one of its plot holes.Ā
When it comes to Mikuni, Jeje is very happy to listen to him ramble about whatever he is reading at the moment but entirely unwilling to discuss his own books. He generally prefers to keep his reading to himself. Recently, however, he has come to make the occasional exception for Misono.Ā
Some books Jeje likes: Meditations, The Essence of Christianity, The Housemaid
Mahiru
Mahiru doesnāt read much. He never really had a lot of free time in the first place; and what little of it there was he preferred to spend in more sociable manners.Ā
He likes having opinions on current discourse, so he would on occasion read books that had gained great popularity. Apart from that most of his reading was texts and excerpts assigned by teachers, which he wasnāt too enthusiastic about.Ā
That somewhat changed upon becoming friends with Kuro, who loves to disappear into a good story, and even more so Misono, who keeps bringing him books he may like with a fervour thatās as unrelenting as it is hard to resist. Mahiru still does not read much, but slightly more for the stack of books on his nightstand that he knows heāll enjoy.Ā
Mahiru reads for entertainment. He likes exciting and accessible plots that get straight to the action, though heās come to appreciate meandering if he can see the point in it. Heās not one to turn up his nose at common tropes and archetypes, and in fact really enjoys seeing the normal guy get thrown into a fantastic adventure because it makes him feel represented. He likes stories best when they are hopeful.
Some books Mahiru likes: The Percy Jackson series, Project Hail Mary, A Psalm for the Wild-Built
Kuro
Kuro likes to escape into a story, even as his life has become one that doesnāt need escaping anymore. Usually he prefers doing so through a video game or anime or movie, but occasionally he will read a book.Ā
Because of this, he enjoys worlds that are fantastical in some way, and stories that take their time to explore them. He likes hypercompetent characters because they remind him of Mahiru in some ways. Heās also a nerd at heart, which menas he loves a fun reference and often reads books that exist as extensions of franchises heās already a fan of.Ā
When he got into reading in the 21st century he preferred shorter books, as they took less of his limited energy to get through. Heās started working on longer novels now, and is determined to tackle the truly menacing tomes of fantasy canon soon.Ā
Sometimes he trades recommendations with his siblings, most often with Hyde. Their tastes overlap in surprisingly many ways.Ā
Some books Kuro likes: Ready Player One, The Will of the Many, Master and Apprentice
