Glycation is considered one of the key factors in the deterioration of collagen. The glycation phenomenon happens when sugars aren't fully utilised by the body. Glucose bonds to the amino group of a protein which modifies its properties, taking collagen and elastin from a visoelastic state (part way between a solid and a liquid) to a rigid, solid and brittle state. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The loss of collagen results in a loss of elastin and hyaluronic acid, as collagen is essential for their production.
