Look I mean
Fiction is not a 1:1 with reality. Sometimes those of us who have been through something truly henious write things to cope with the horrors, or sometimes those who are frightened of the idea may write things to try and make the horror smaller. I don’t kink shame people because I know it’s shockingly common for people who have been sexually assaulted to explore kink as a way to regain control in a safe, healthy environment, with a partner that hears them and respects their needs. (Although I side eye the white people writing Louis getting called slurs in those fics. That seems a bit much).
That being said: I think there’s some hypocrisy with the “yes for me, not for thee” mindset going on that some people have been touting. I agree the season was insensitive. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, especially as it comes out that the actors were not happy with some of the choices made. But to say dark topics can never be depicted, and then to turn around and write the very same topics you condem? That’s some bullshit. It also silences survivors or demands survivors have to look or act a certain way to be deemed worthy of respect, which is a disturbing precedent.

I think it kind of highlights the idea of some of these younger or less experienced activists.
The whole “Justice for Louis” shtick is easy. He’s not real. He’s a fictional character. They can graft whatever uncomplicated feelings they want onto him, demand he’s a perfect person with perfect ideals and then go on the warpath when he’s not. They send anon hate and threats and have escalated to threatening to commit violence at a real event, and they’re calling that activism.
However, what alarms me with this is two things. First, this ire is being directed towards a real man of color. He doesn’t agree with some of their ideals (bipoc characters should be allowed to be imperfect, and explore hard situations, instead of being put on a pedestal) so they have resorted to calling him slurs. Some are threatening violence towards him. They’ve centered a fictional character over a real man.
Second- look, as powerful and affirming as stories are, demanding characters do what you want in media always in every story isn’t really a way to organize. It becomes fascist at a point, especially if a black creative said he wanted more opportunities to explore complex stories and you’re attempting to take that away from him through threats and violence. Where’s this rage for food deserts? For affordable housing? For affordable health care? Labor rights? All of these things impact men of color too but I don’t see this level of energy from these folks. I don’t even see many of these people talking about these problems.
I mean, maybe they care. But I think the way they’re talking about Jacob because he didn’t agree with them about a character he played is wildly inappropriate.
