J. Seward Johnson Jr.’s sculpture Double Check was a perfect choice for me because I feel the original fits so well in Lower Manhattan. A businessman stops to sit on a bench simply to "Double-Check" something inside of his briefcase. Perhaps for a calculator? A pen? It's a common thing to do. He's man-made and is genuinely not indestructible as we humans are not either, but we do survive extremely hard things. What captured me most was a textbook photo by Susan Meiselas at Liberty Plaza in 2001 of Double Check still sitting there, in the rubble of the fall of the Twin Towers. He survived not just the elements and all that happens in the city, but a catastrophic, evil disaster. This truly adds to the art. It says so much. It advances the original work from a man stopping to sit for a minute, to the irony of how hard it is to survive being a businessman in New York City. How hard it is to survive in the world. Our textbook conveys that he is working on his computer but the images available show the inside of a briefcase. My interpretation is somewhat similar in comparison though.
