There are salty, warm tears streaming upon the surface of his cheeks as he keeps their fingers firmly clasped together, eyes still focused forward onto the rolling waves before them. He can't find the words to express how deafening this feels, this weighty dread that he can't seem to shake off. 

Her tone is soft in his ears but there's a subtle snap between each syllable. This was where they had first met, where he had first lain eyes on her; the beginning of their unwritten novel together. And here they were, slowly scribbling away at the close; perhaps trying to slip in some sad epilogue just to tie all the ends together.
