What are the differences between the religions the characters in your story follow?
oho, this is going to be a long one! :) Senki is the biggest religion in the RÄmian Empire. It originated in the Sen valley in the RÄmiq Highlands about 4000 years ago and is based around the divinely-given Annals of Prophecy and a loose collection of gods that varies depending who you ask. It has been deliberately spread around in the past millenium as the empire has grown to try and form a cohesive group identity among the various conquered peoples, so its very prominent and also comes in a lot of variants, since it has syncretized with the local beliefs in so many different places. The Senki denominations that feature in Aros Against Fate are: Norvic Senki, which holds the mythology and in some cases the gods themselves to be allegorical and has a prevalent theme of order versus chaos (based on the original two Norve gods, Alteyr (order) and Manir (chaos), who in broader Senki are watered down to language and weather but are still the most important figures in Norvic Senki), and in which Saints are historical figures but not extant divinities. Gharan Senki, which has the figure of the Artisan of the World (the creator) above any other gods (they donât consider the Artisan a god- the Artisan is on another level entirely), who are sometimes considered independent beings but sometimes considered aspects of the Artisan, and in which there arenât really Saints. Dak Senki, which holds the gods and myths to be literal and in which Saints are Resurrected (sometimes the gods bring people back to life) who have fulfilled their divine purpose and ascended, and within Dak Senki: Lowlands Senki, popular in the RÄmiq Lowlands. Saints are popular. Medeis Senki, which reveres magic above all else as a divine gift from the gods. Mages are seen as inherently superior/closer to the divine due to having developed magic naturally, and the study of magic is a holy pursuit. Senask Senki, which is heavily syncretized with pre-RÄmian Se-Naskan beliefs; small gods are everywhere and a common practice is to have little wooden icons as household gods.
TelÄso: believes that the dead become part of a greater collective consciousness, and honour and seek guidance from that ancestral collective.
Vatki: There was a being known as the Creator who became the world and everything in it, so Creator and Creation are one and the same, and everything is equally sacred, as the Creator gave herself to bring everything into existence.
Jumalusk: originating in Berysek, this religion worships the Three-Faced God. The Three-Faced God is one god with three aspects: the Maker (a woman), the Scholar (a man), and the Kether (parent, belonging to the Beri third gender of kolman), who each have dominion over different parts of life; roughly speaking the three domains break down into physical, mental, and emotional, and they also represent the trinity of established Beri genders. They believe there are no other true gods.
Sarkjyn religion: There is a closed pantheon of gods, each with domain over their own element. The six elements- one for each cycle of the year- are fire, light, air, water, ice, and earth.
RĂșĂfaitawn: everything has its own unique spirit and should be respected as such.
How did you come up with the name "Senki" (which has a very nice sound btw) and all the gods and things surrounding them? How much of it is true and how much is perhaps misinterpretation if the people who follow the religion?
honestly I just threw some letters/syllables together lol. All the religion stuff is a work in progress, and honestly probably will be forever because itâs polytheistic and has lots of different permutations so there isnât One True Form. As to how much is true⊠all of it is true and none of it is true. These forces exist- no one denies this; âdivineâ magic is still pure and concentrated magic even if youâre not inclined to believe it was granted by gods. They manifest how you believe they will manifest. These beings exist, maybe, and if they do maybe you see them as gods or maybe you see them as some other powerful being like very powerful fairies or aliens or demons or whatever.
Copied from my theology document:
School of thought 1- Schrödingerâs cat/Heisenbergâs uncertainty principle gods: Divine entities are both real and not until acted upon by an outside force that causes them to become one or the other.
School of thought 2- Manifestation: Divine entities are all manifestations of the same omnipresent magical force, which presents differently depending on beliefs.
Differing interpretations, differing presentations (more Senki specific): How divine entities act and present is dependent on how they and the actions of the observer/object of divine action are already interpreted by the observer/object of the divine actions and by that personâs particular branch of religion.
Itâs like quantum physics, kind of.
The Annals of Prophecy are real, but whether that means that gods predicted thousands of years of existence or that some property of the Annals traps the world into these patterns is debatable; maybe itâs both. Not everyone believes theyâre real, because some of the prophecies are quite vague and could be interpreted to mean whatever event actually happened, and hardly anyone can read Ancient Wersenki anymore anyway so how do we know that what they supposedly say is even what they actually say?
From Daanah: âWe know there are forces beyond our comprehension. Divine magic users and the Annals of Prophecy are proof of that. We personify these forces and call them gods, but to what degree do gods as person-like beings truly exist? I have felt Alteyrâs power but donât believe ze is a being to be conversed with, but some who believe they are say they have seen and talked to gods.â
happy storyteller saturday! your characters end up at a fortune telling booth! what are they told? how much stock do they put in the predictions? how do they feel about fortune tellers and the whole process? :3
this is a great question actually because prophecy is a HUGE thing in the world of Aros Against Fate. (Iâm gonna deviate slightly from the exact scope of the questions because I have interesting and related information to share that is maybe slightly to the left of what this question is actually asking.)
