Which do you prefer: faded "A" or (swipe left) minty "B"? Here we have two (mostly) identical 1972 #Gibson #ES325 TDWs. Pic A is mine and it obvs. spent some time in the sun! Pic B is my friend Don's, and he apparently took better care of his because its finish is almost perfectly preserved and unfaded (oh, plus he has the fancier binding, tailpiece, tuners, and pickup covers, so he has an advantage right off the bat!). But when these guitars rolled out of the factory on Parsons Street 50 years ago they would have looked almost identical. Which one looks better now? I am of two minds: Half of me loves minty vintage. To have survived 50 years or more without any significant signs of aging is quite an accomplishment (I was not personally able to achieve this myself! 🤣). I have always been fascinated by history and old things, and to see a time capsule-grade instrument is always thrilling. But the other half of me loves to see wear and tear. Not only do battle scars, age marks, lacquer checking, scratches, and faded finishes make for more interesting pictures, they also speak to a life well (and sometimes, as in my case, not-so-well...) lived. Beat up vintage guitars have a story to tell beyond "I sat in my case under a bed for the last 47 years". And I think that story is what I am most interested in. 1972 #Gibson #ES355 TDSV. It may not be Easter Sunday, but today is truly a day of resurrection. My cherished 355 was out of commission for almost 2 years (due to an event so traumatic to me that I still don't think I am ready to talk about it yet...), but now it's back and playing better than ever thanks to the skilled work of my luthier @alastair_miller. A friend of a friend just brought his walnut #Gibson #ES325 over to my house for a #gibsunday visit and photo session! This one owner guitar was bought on November 1st 1974 at @stevesmusic in Montreal (I know this because the original bill of sale is in the case!), and is still owned by the original buyer. 325s were kind of a mixed bag of parts but this one is a little fancier because it has the ES175 style tailpiece rather than the regular ES3xx thinline tailpiece. Notice it also has the the harmonica bridge (typical of 1974), but the embossed Gibson pickups (typical of 1972). Plus, I have never seen a walnut finish 325 with multiply black/white/black/white body binding before (mine just has single ply white 😢). I have definitely seen this fancier binding on cherry 325s, but not so far on a walnut model!
