Today is #WorldSemicolonDay and this year it seems even more important to share. #ProjectSemicolon #SemicolonProject216 #semicolonmovement
"A semicolon represents a sentence the author could've ended, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life." Today is World Semicolon Day. As someone who suffers, I know first hand how important it is to start the conversation and bring awareness to mental health, suicide and self harm. In March of 2016, after my closest call with suicide, I decided that it was time to figure out what was going on in my head and try to "fix" it as best I could. I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, Manic Depression (an extension of my Bipolar) and Generalized Anxiety disorder. Since my diagnosis I've put in a lot of work trying to improve my life and overall mental state. I was on tons of medication and while it decreased my desires for suicide, all of that medication made me feel like someone I wasn't, made me sick and had me hazed 24/7. I am no longer on any medication. In October of 2016, I got my semicolon tattoo. Getting the tattoo has been a constant reminder that I can conquer whatever I set my mind to. That I can get through anything that the world throws at me and come out the other side, still breathing. In December 2016, I lost my grandpa. My grandpa and I had a unique relationship, we had always been really close, and he was always helping with my mental health. Before I was diagnosed, I would always say, "if grandpa passes, I won't be able to go on without him." When i found out that he was really gone, I thought about killing myself, but this time it was different. What I thought would end my life has, in some way, made me a stronger fighter. My grandpa was integral in my mental health recovery. He was always there, ready to listen, give advice and just be there for me with a funny joke or a strong hug. It was fitting for me to place his signature so close to my semicolon tattoo. His passing showed me that I am here to fight this fight I was given, and to bring awareness any way that I can. Your story isn't over yet and neither is mine. #keeptalkingmh #projectsemicolon #semicolonproject416 #semicolonmovement

Today is #WorldSemicolonDay, founded by @projsemicolon. This year's theme is "A Story Worth Sharing", so I thought I would share a bit of my story with you. My name is Caitie, and I started The Bumblefly Effect. I struggle with generalized anxiety disorder and chronic depression. Since I have become more candid about my diagnoses, it has opened the door for so many incredible people to come into my life. Although it has certainly made things a bit easier, I still struggle internally with guilt, embarrassment, and shame. Most of the people in my life who struggle with mental illness are also creative. I do not think this is a coincidence. Society doesn't exactly make it easy for those who struggle with mental illness, nor is it easy or encouraged to follow a career path in the arts. I hope that by curating these works of art, someone will be able to find some peace and solidarity in their darkest moments. Suffering is a universal human condition. I feel that it is crucial to acknowledge this and start creating a larger space for creatives and those who struggle with their mental health in our society. #semicolonmovement We accept all types of creativity (music! visual arts! writing! dance! photography! film! you name it!) Send a DM/tag @thebumbleflyeffect or e-mail [email protected] for a feature. ππ
