Panic Attack by Douglas Robert Turek
True story. I had my first panic attack. Throughout the night I had chest pains, which kept me awake and worried. At 4 AM, I gave up on sleeping, resigned myself to a nap later and decided to go downstairs to read or something. I was still anxious about the chest pain and I started to panic, which made me breathe fast, my heart pounding, and I was convinced it was a heart attack. Googling did not make me feel better, as panic attacks and heart attacks have many of the same symptoms. My wife helped me calm down, assured me that panic attacks suck, but pass. At her urging, I listened to some music to calm down. An hour or so later, I was mostly okay. Throughout the day, my chest pain remained. I went to the emergency room, where, after about 20 hours of observation, chest x-rays, cat scans and poking and prodding, they finally determined that I had pericarditis, a swelling of the sac that surrounds the heart. It’s treatable, I got on meds, and they seem to have sorted it out. It’s been a rough week or so, but I’m grateful to be here. It’s amazing what can come out of nowhere.
