I saw this image on twitter recently (https://twitter.com/luckytim81/status/529424197878288384). In this photo it's 1989, before the World Wide Web (just), and long before instagram and twitter. We see Kylie Minogue taking a selfie with a fan. I remember those small format cameras, the one in the image looks like a 110 format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/110_film) Pocket Instamatic (http://photo.even.free.fr/col_app_kodak110.php), or something similar. Those cameras were, as the name implies, pocket sized, easy to use, and generally took quite lousy photos due to the very small negative and the typically cheap, sometimes plastic lenses many of the cameras used. Plus, of course, they had none of the advantages of today's digital cameras. The fan in this picture would have had to finish her roll of film, send it in for processing, and then wait a few days or weeks to find out if the tiny grainy image her camera took actually captured both herself and Ms Minogue. She should be so lucky... Lucky lucky lucky. But I do miss the actual shape of these cameras, especially the later, slimline models. They were kinda cool. I wonder if, since digital cameras are now so cheap, if we'll ever see a digital camera in that shape. The body shape is just right for stereoscopic 3D photography too, since it would allow the placement of two cameras eye-distance apart, along with two Viewmaster-style viewfinders to look through. Add gyro sensors and a head strap and it would be a simple VR headset as well. I'd back one on kickstarter. What does it say about me that a photo of a slender, young, bare-tummy Kylie Minogue prompts me to geek out about cameras?
