i kind of assumed that when we hear about western and japanese studios outsourcing some of the animation work (especially inbetweens) to korean studios, those studios are mostly south korean. but actually a whole bunch of stuff has been worked on by the north korean SEK studio.
on that list, the only projects I’ve watched are AtlA and the Simpsons movie. for AtlA, the one they worked on is the first episode of season 3, after the south korean MOI studio subcontracted some of the work out.
as far as original work goes, they’re mostly producing kids’ stuff that doesn’t make its way out of NK, but there were a couple of notable north-south collaborations in Empress Chung (2005) which was dubbed in both dialects of korean and debuted on both sides of the border simultaneously, and subsequently Warriors of the Goguryeo which I can’t find any info on.
unfortunately the worsening of diplomatic relations in the 2010s put a pretty hard stop to collaborations like that so there’s not really been a lot since, though they’ve been contracting to other studios (mostly in china) as recently as 2016. i’m going to see if I can track down a copy of Empress Chung because I think it would be a really interesting thing to watch in animation night down the line.
