Technique for Transplanting Seedlings
Transplanting seedlings can be tricky, but you can help young plants thrive with the right approach. My go-to technique is to transplant during the early morning or late afternoon when the sun isn't too intense. I ensure the soil in the seedling tray is moist before transplanting, as this minimizes root disturbance. After gently loosening the root ball, I planted the seedling at the same depth it grew in its container. To reduce transplant shock, I water thoroughly and mulch the base to retain moisture. I provide shade or cover for the first few days if conditions are harsh, giving the plant time to adjust to its new environment.
So this has become the “throw it at the wall and see what sticks” tray. Not a bad germination rate so far considering some of these seeds were packed as early as the 2016 growing season! What’s sprouting so far are zinnias (giant and ‘Exquisite’ cultivars) and calendula ‘Resina.’
Both very quick to germinate if you are doing any kind of gardening with kids or are just impatient. Going to get some nasturtiums started with the intern today for another quick gratification plant!
Most of you are aware I grew up in the greenhouse business our family has owned for 4 generations . We still are a greenhouse family to this day. I’ve shared this before but I’m sharing it again for beginner seed starters because generations of experience has taught many lessons. 1- Do not use the brown paper recycled pots of doom. 2- Add cinnamon to your seed starting mix. 1 cup of cinnamon per 20# of soil and then more sprinkled a top it. This will aid to prevent damping off and is actually a rooting hormone as well. 3- Use seed starting mix not potting soil and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. It does matter. 4- Use heat mats w a thermostat set at 73-75° for most seeds . They’re worth it and they do improve germination significantly. 5- Any light in the right K temp will work. 5500-6500K is the correct k temp. This is not to be confused with lumens, they are not the same. 6.) Start when the signs are right. Don’t be willynilly. Ask any member of The Compound Club and they’ll tell ya all about how their termination rates and garden yields improved bc they followed this advice. . . . . . . #folkcore #cottagecore #gardencore #simpliving #slowfashion #simpleandstill #farmcore #slowliving #prairiestyle #mountainstyle #fromscratchliving #fromscratch #ancestralliving #folkways #ancestralwisdom #slowmotherhood #intentionalliving #counterculturemom #seedstarting #seedstarts #greenhouse #greenhousegardening #greenhouselife #greenhouses #greenhousebusiness #nurserybusiness #gardenmama #gardencore #gardencoach #gardening https://www.instagram.com/p/CmsL-E0O3E1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello folks!
Due to the level of interest, I’m going to do my first gardening class in three weeks! We’ll start off with seed starting, because that had the most interest, but I’ll also be covering many other topics over the following weeks. This first class will be Saturday the 12th at 7pm (PST). If you can’t make it at that time, I’ll also be doing it Tuesday the 15th at 4pm. I’m hoping that by doing them on different days and at different times, that most people will be able to attend one of them.
Here’s the description for the first one:
This is your chance to learn all about seed starting for beginners. The focus is on starting vegetables that will thrive in our specific climate and avoiding common mistakes. Topics covered will include: seed variety recommendations, seed company recommendations, timing for transplant and direct sowing, and methods for indoor and outdoor seed starting suited for the Maritime Pacific Northwest. This will be a 40 minute class, followed by a Q&A period. The class will be recorded, so please turn off your camera at the start of class if you don’t want your face shown. $20 per class, and you will get a link to a page of information and you are always welcome to ask me questions directly at any time.
If you’d like to register, please pm me! If income is a barrier, please message me so we can work something out. I cannot express how happy I am to be teaching these classes again! :)
I would like to say that though it says it’s specifically for my home region, seed starting basics are pretty universal, it’s really just the seed varieties and companies that are locally relevant.
