A lot of new gardeners buy expensive, pre-grown seedlings from nurseries. While it saves a little time, you are missing out on the best part of gardening! Here is why growing from seed is vastly superior:

Massive Variety: Nurseries only carry 2 or 3 types of tomatoes. When you buy vegetable seeds online, you have access to purple carrots, striped eggplants, and rare heirloom tomatoes you’ll never find in a grocery store.

Stronger Root Systems: Plants grown directly in their final container experience zero "transplant shock."

Cost-Effective: A single packet of seeds costs the same as one nursery seedling, but yields dozens of plants.

before a seed ever cracks open, its fate is already half decided by the medium it's sitting in.

garden soil feels like the obvious, free choice. it isn't. it's dense, it holds water in the wrong way, and it's full of fungal spores and old weed seeds just waiting for a warm tray to wake up in. a proper seed starting mix is light and sterile and lets roots push through easily instead of fighting for space.

the seeds themselves matter too. heirloom varieties from reputable growers carry generations of resilience in them, they're not just genetics, they're a small act of preserving something. it's less about buying the fanciest packet and more about starting with something alive and honest.

some things that help along the way:

a well-draining, sterile seed starting mix, never garden soil

organic or heirloom seeds when you can find them

a soil conditioner like eco green worked gently into the mix, for structure that roots actually want to grow into

it used to be that the gap between planting and germination felt like waiting for something fragile to decide if it wanted to live. now the seeds come up faster, the roots go down deeper, and there's a density to the plants that wasn't there before.

i switched to liquid biofertilizer this year — one made from biogas slurry, which is essentially the nutrient-dense liquid left after organic matter breaks down. it carries plant hormones, micronutrients, beneficial organisms.

the garden doesn't feel like a project anymore. it feels like a conversation.

Organizing my seed collection and doing some germination tests to see what to keep since some of these are a couple of presidential terms old. (It’s the Baker Creek seeds, I bought them before I knew they were the way they are.)

So this has become the “throw it at the wall and see what sticks” tray. Not a bad germination rate so far considering some of these seeds were packed as early as the 2016 growing season! What’s sprouting so far are zinnias (giant and ‘Exquisite’ cultivars) and calendula ‘Resina.’
