Waiting on the Sox to Change
When are Eloy Jimenez and Michael Kopech going to be promoted to the MLB roster? This is a question that has made Twitter go nuts the past few weeks. Are we just impatient and sick of watching a team 30 under .500 trot out some subpar starting pitchers and outfielders? Maybe, but this is worth the question. It may seem like overkill because I am definitely not the first Sox blogger to write about this. I am just bringing to light some potential dates and delays to these two promotions.
Let’s start with the delay. The front office could have some reluctance after watching Yoan Moncada, Reynaldo Lopez, and Lucas Giolito struggle this season. I get that, but that isn’t the smartest approach to development. Some players are going to struggle. Some aren’t. That’s why the Sox are stocking up with as much talent to give them the best percentage chance at sustained success. If one guy struggles, it shouldn’t make, break, or delay your rebuild timelines. My Sox Summer from THE Section 108 said this and I agree with him that this could be one of the delays, so I have to give credit where credit is due.
The second and perhaps correct answer is that extra year of control. Ah yes, it’s such a fun topic to have everyone explain how an extra season of control in 2037 matters in 2018. I’m kidding about 2037, but you should see my point. The target window for this team to compete is still 2020-2029. It may start with an 85-win season and sneaking into the wild card game. It doesn’t matter. Competitiveness in a season should be defined as meaningful baseball at the end of September. If that’s the case, then that extra season of arbitration doesn’t really matter all that much now. How is this control determined? Essentially, a minor league player only has a certain amount of service time, which is 172 days on an MLB team. Said MLB team can keep the player for 6 years, once he starts his service time. If you want to go into more depth, click here: https://www.fangraphs.com/library/principles/contract-details/service-time-super-two/.
Basically, people are worried that they won’t have Eloy and Kopech for that extra season, but by that time the following will have happened: Carlos Rodon (the ace of your staff) will be a free agent in 2022, and Tim Anderson, your starting shortstop for the foreseeable future, will be a free agent in 2025. Those are two core pieces to your future that might not be on the team for that extra year of control
Either way, the front office is in no rush to bring these guys up, so when will they? Here are some dates:
August 10 or 17 – Eloy only. I can see the front office making this move on a weekend series, which makes sense. They want to sell tickets. I think if they feel he is ready, we could see Eloy either of these days.
August 31 – Eloy Only. We play the Red Sox. Maybe they can put this game on ESPN. Once again, it’s a Friday.
September call-ups – I don’t think this will happen, but you could see both Eloy and Kopech on the roster in September. At that point, you might as well leave at least Kopech in AAA to get that extra year of control. He has pitch well lately, but he did start the season in Charlotte looking a little shaky.
After April 15, 2019 – This looks like it might be the most likely scenario for Kopech unless he continues his hot streak of pitching. We could see Eloy then, too. The front office could be aiming for both of them next April, since 2018 doesn’t matter.
Either way, these two need to have MLB experience eventually. You can only prepare for the MLB in AAA for so long. Anyways, I’m getting sad that we have a little less than two months of White Sox baseball. Enjoy it while we can, even if we don’t see Eloy and Kopech in White Sox garb until next season.
It makes little sense for Congress to attempt to craft specific limitations and exceptions that take into account the nature of particular users or particular kinds of works if instead people are simply going to look to fair use in order to support such activities.
The Association of American Publishers' lobbyist Allen Adler, to CommDaily (sorry, the article is behind a paywall, but it's from the Aug. 11 edition). In case you thought we were being paranoid when we suggested Section 108 revision could endanger fair use.
The Library Copyright Alliance (LCA) consists of the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Association of College and Research Libraries. On May 8, 2015, LCA provided the House Committee on the Judiciary with recommendations on copyright reform. In that document, LCA specifically urged Congress not to address Section 108 of the Copyright Act, which provides exceptions for libraries and archives.
Indeed, some rights holders see the updating of Section 108 as an opportunity to repeal the fair use safe harbor in Section 108(f)(4) and restrict the availability of fair use to libraries.
Some people hate libraries.
Additionally, LCA is concerned about the lack of transparency relating to this inquiry. LCA expects the Copyright Office to publish a list of the interested parties it meets in the course of this inquiry as well as a detailed summary of what each of these parties advised.
It’s not like we don’t know who hates us, but being able to drag them in front of the public with proof is always nice.
