Pharisees and Saducees
When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees* coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?e8Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.9And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.f10Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
The above is talking about John the Baptizer, not Jesus. But Jesus also had problems with the Pharisees and the Saducees, the religious people of his day. And yet, it seems today, that it is many of the people who claim Jesus’ name the most loudly that act as the Pharisees and Saducees did in Jesus’ time. Why is this? I don’t know. But I tknow that it has turned most of the rest of the world away from Christianity because they think that it means being one of these self-righteous people. The second commandment is “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy G-d in vain.” When I was growing up I was taught that meant you shouldn’t say certain words. But what it really means is you shouldn’t claim to be a believer and then live your live in a way that makes others think less of the name of G-d.
