Another mission of @checkeditoutchicago is to give back and make a positive impact within our local community. Each year we partner with a new charity that focuses on those who are underserved in Chicago. This year we are supporting @second_bridge_inc

Second Bridge was established to support children in the foster care system by supplying items such as clothing, shoes, bedding, toys, gifts and school supplies. All the necessities to make kids feel loved and deserving, while transitioning into a new home.

To make the greatest impact we are asking for your help. In addition to showing your Porsche, you can also make a difference by participating in our online auction. The auction will be open on August 16th, then close live at #Check21. March 1 marks first anniversary of Penang's second bridge

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 27, 2015:

The first year anniversary of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah bridge (JSAHMS), which falls on March 1, sees a total of four million vehicles having crossed the second bridge linking Penang to the mainland.

Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB), in a press statement released today, said that the past one year had seen an average of 12,500 vehicles using the bridge on a daily basis.

JKSB managing director Datuk Dr Ismail Mohamed Taib recalled how it took 64 months for the concessionaire and its contractors to complete the construction of the mega project.

“This project also puts Malaysia on the world map again with world-class accolades such as the Green Apple Award and International Star Award for Quality (ISAQ) Geneva, including 15 Malaysian Book of Records,” said Ismail.

The 26km-long bridge opened its door to traffic at 1am on March 2 last year after its official opening by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak the night before, which saw spectacular display of fireworks and colourful performances by local celebrities.

Thousands had gathered in front of the JSAHMS Toll Plaza Complex and most of them had been there since early morning on March 1 last year as many were trying their luck to get the certificate as the first one thousand users to cross the new bridge from Batu Kawan.

Ismail added that while the average 12,500 figure may seem low, it is actually collecting about 90% of the lower bound income projection.

“The number can increase to 20,000, especially during the festivities, long weekends and during school holidays, and these are the current pattern of the traffic using JSAHMS”, added Ismail.

Between April 2014 and December 2014, more than 3.4 million vehicles have been using the bridge to get to Penang from the mainland and vice versa.

JKSB, Ismail said, was expecting to see an increase in total traffic volume of at least 10% when the Public Works Department’s upgrading works on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway is completed by the year end.

Currently, the project is 57% complete and is reported to be ahead of schedule.

NGO: Name 2nd Penang Bridge after king

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 24

The Coalition of Muslim non-governmental Organisations in Penang on Monday suggested that the Second Penang Bridge be named after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

Its secretary, Ahmad Yakqub Nazri, said the move would empower the royal institution.

“I feel it is time the people suggested that the second bridge be named the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge after the king, who is also the Sultan of Kedah.

“We represent the people in being proud that the bridge was built in this state.  His Majesty’s name will be embedded on the longest bridge in Southeast Asia and the third longest in the world as well as the latest national landmark,” he said in a press conference here.

He was confident that everyone in the state would support the suggestion and hoped that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the state government and the Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd would accept the suggestion.

Ahmad Yakqub said a letter on the suggestion would be prepared and sent to the Prime Minister and Istana Negara on Monday.

The 24km bridge (17km of it will be above the water and 7km over land) had been designed to be environment-friendly, connecting Batu Kawan on the mainland and Batu Maung on the island.

The bridge, due to be opened early next month, was expected to reduce the congestion on the Penang Bridge by about 25%

2nd Penang Bridge will drive up land prices on mainland

NIBONG TEBAL, Feb 23

The opening of the Second Penang Bridge is expected to spur the state’s economic growth and development, apart from reducing traffic congestion, said Penang Umno Liaison Committee Chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman.

He said the bridge was expected to raise property prices in Bayan Baru, Batu Kawan and Nibong Tebal as they were part of the development network.

“The new growth areas will lead to higher land prices and open up job opportunities for local residents in industrial, commercial and residential development,” he told reporters after handing out 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) 2014 for the Nibong Tebal parliamentary constituency here today.

About 10,000 people are expected to witness the opening of the RM4.5 billion bridge on Saturday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce the toll rates and  duration of a toll-free ride from next Sunday.

Meanwhile, 333,915 people in Penang are eligible for the BR1M 2014, involving an allocation of RM174.3 million.
