Book 7, 2023
"Seaward" by Susan Cooper reminds me once again how much I miss the era of pre-YA children's literature, where it was all categorized as nothing more specific than picture books, chapter books with pictures, and chapter books. Cooper's best known for her Dark Is Rising series, but "Seaward" is a concise little sort-of-portal standalone fantasy of the sort where normal kids from the normal world end up elsewhere and just roll with it. It's a melancholy book at times, clearly concerned with children's understanding and acceptance of death, but in a gentle way. There's a giant stick insect that talks and don't question it, just let the giant stick insect help for a while.
Just have an adventure for 160 pages.

Drawn Seawards (2017) watercolor, polychromos
I’ve always been - drawn seawards. There is nothing like the ocean, the vast sea to connect me with my inner being, my soul that yearns for limitlessness and freedom.
I always feel the drive to move forward, somewhere. Never quite there yet. On the other hand, the current moment is all I have. It’s where my power lies.
Mermay! I just wanted to draw a shirt that says Cunt. #mermay #seaward
