I’ve been thinking about my unique perspective and how I can talk about current issues going on in the world, as someone who is trans. Tackling lots of different issues for me is too vague so I will narrow it down to LGBT issues and experiences.
Therefore I’m going to look at more queer and LGBT artists starting with Martine Gutierrez.
Gutierrez is a trans, latinx, visual and performance artist based in Brooklyn. In this series of photos, ‘line up’, she explores the divide between reality and fantasy. The photos include the artist amongst mannequins dressed similarly to her so closely that you can barely tell them apart.
“Mannequins very succinctly represent the artificial, especially in materiality, when compared to the imperfect reality of the human body, but in coaxing the viewer’s misinterpretation, misleading with light and guise, I am looking for the place where those two worlds meet.”- Martine Gutierrez
Being a trans person people expect you to play up these gender expectations in order to prove that you are real. Trans women are expected to always be perfectly feminine to be accepted, as are trans men expected to hyper masculine and non binary people expected to be this perfectly in-between androgyny.
This shoe box scene was made by my great grandmother Spiffy, the two dolls made from old fashioned cotton covered lead hair curlers-
“I think they had pipe cleaner arms twisted round the neck & a piece of bent tin - cut from a tin can (lethal - really needed metal cutting shears!😮 Tins are thinner now!😉) jammed between the 'legs' to make a 'stand' “-my Nan
She also made wooden peg dolls, I find that I’m interested in puppets and home made dolls because they are a sign of the working class and resourceful, if you were poor you would likely more see a musical puppet show than go to a theatre. The personality from being home made gives a narrative to the doll with it simply existing.
Some quick sketches based on peg dolls, I wanted to take inspiration for their stiff form and the awkward ways that they can be posed. I also wanted to think about how they usually look dishevelled as they are essentially made as toys for children and how that might effect their character.
