Y’all I am not okay
My home city is surrounded by fires on all sides. I have friends who have been evacuated from their homes - some are allowed back right now, and some are not. I have friends-of-friends who have lost their homes already. One lost her goat farm and most of her livestock. My house is 5 miles (as the crow flies) from the nearest fire border, as far as I can tell on the most current maps. It’s 2 miles from the nearest evacuation zone border. My mother-in-law’s home is in an area where the evacuation orders keep getting put in place, then rescinded. We had to convince her yesterday to leave her home and come stay with us until it was safe. When she saw the evacuation zone no longer covered her place, she went back home.
I am breathing in the smoke of wild vegetation, homes, animals, electrical stuff, and more every day. Because we’re in the middle of summer and my house is a POS I can’t keep my windows closed. Because I can’t keep the windows closed, running an air purifier of any kind is pointless.
Every day for the past week(ish) I have woken up to yellow, brown, orange skies.
I can’t see the hills two miles from my house. I can barely see the trees in the park half a mile from my house.
My Found Family’s home base is about to go up in smoke. Not that we had a guaranteed “home” after COVID forced us to go a year without being open to the public (and therefore make the money we need to continue our hobby).
I am terrified for my friends. I am terrified for my family. I am terrified for myself.
