“Dasia” . ✍️📺 #tvconcept #showbible #scriptideas This is a homage to #RomanCoppala’s CQ . It was a tumultuous time for the Film Department, a known mediocre training ground for bitter creatives who want to direct feature films but those who stick w/ the craft go into advertising & corporate video production. A series of resignations & an acrimonious split w/the critical studies wing forced a refocus. . The new Cinematic Arts Department now only has production faculty & ugrad students now take pre-film courses & apply to be in the “film school” in their sophomore yr. Two odd new courses are required: economic & organizational sociology (SOC) & consumer culture & markets (ANTH). These were cynically dubbed as business courses for socialists. . . The Department hosted a student film festival featuring the work of the BFAs (shorts & pilots). There was a guerrilla feel to the training, where students made the most out of limited resources & learned to stay under the radar of authorities for non-permit shoots. It was a combination of exhilarating & grueling: a blur of shooting, lighting, sound, cinematography, & editing. . Jill always had earbuds on & seemed immersed in her own world. Her short would astonish everyone. She cast Dasia as a seemingly vapid college student who models & is trying her hand at being a fashion influencer. Something’s off though. It turns out that Dasia is actually an director/actor in a 1968 dystopic film about life in the near future where everyone is a glossy magazine on slideshow carousels placed throughout the city. The 1968 Dasia is seemingly put upon by her messy life of breakups, friend drama, & love triangles, but also realizes it’s rich with real interactions w/chainsmoking students in dive bars having heated conversations about Franz Fanon, social stratification and bougie aesthetics, & the Columbia student uprising. The audience feels the palpable angst of both Jill & Dasia’s relationship w/privilege & champagne socialism. “I need some conviction, or some kind of prescription” 📺✍️#TVconcept #scriptideas Isabella finds herself as the campus pub music events manager & got it to count for her co-op internship. She has 5 weeks to line up 15 headliners b/t Aug. & Dec. The Stroop is a small venue in the cavelike basement of The Union, a relic of a tenement building in Hell’s Kitchen. The 85/15 female:male ratio meant the pub had zero “broey” vibes, but it was way too gritty to be a hangout for basics. The crowd that hung out were an odd mix, but skewed towards the BFA, architecture, lit, & fashion crowd. So, most if not all of the bands would be indie w/nods to interesting crossovers. . . Like a huge Tetris puzzle the dates started to fill in. She started planing out the promotions on Twitter & Instagram & even creates wheat paste posters that double as assignments for her Adobe Digital Tools class. . . Visa issues stemming from increased INS scrutiny for performers creates gaps in the schedule. Isabella is now dealing w/immig. lawyers & contract disputes, on top of 15 credits & a failing relationship with a needy boy. She’s the “adult” in the relationship keeping things together, but things all come to a head at the fall regatta for the College sailing team out at City Island after getting a late summer cold. As the horn section of the irreverent “marching band” plays the fight song, the theme from Jaws, & @DuranDuran’s “Rio,” Isabella starts to fall apart & the boyfriend can’t deal & flees to his parents’ house in Connecticut. She picks up soup from the bodega & heads to her dorm (actually a cool converted row house building). Her dad unexpectedly visits from Weehawken, but she really didn’t want to see him or anyone for that matter. They have a good chat: work, school, stress, & the boyfriend. He just let her do the talking & work things out herself until she falls asleep. She awoke at 3am & sees her dad has tidied up, did the dishes, & filled the fridge with real food. The table has a bunch of meds & vitamin supplements. He left on a neon Post-it: “It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices.” – Dumbledore. She nodded & chuckled…& went back to bed. (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByA4x24FihU/?igshid=1v8dyda7qkeyc
“you confuse spectacle for talent” 📺 #tvconcept #scriptideas ✍️ . . It isn’t a generational #GenZ thing, but maybe it is. Alex singlehandedly turned the College blog into a mini media empire w/podcasts, @Spotify DJs, and a shoppable fashion @Instagram using an affiliate ecommerce model. Oddly, she is somewhat invisible on campus, but has an effortless style that others envied. Some figured out that she knows how to accessorize, but also has a keen eye for fabrics & which ones look & feel cheap. She seems to have an endless supply of designer glasses/sunglasses & rotated handbags, each of which has her essentials: a Juul, a touch-up makeup bag, a micro first aid kit, and a jeweled mini ballpoint pen that a NYC designer made for her as gifts. . . Alex isn’t 20 going on 36, but is no-nonsense and has a way of turning a phrase that can be devastatingly spot-on. Her Met Gala Camp commentary Tweets were simple one liners punctuated by emojis: #GwynnethPaltrow (Reading for the part of Miss Haversham 👵), #KarlieKloss (Liberace’s wallpaper 🎹✨), & #FrankOcean (Dropping his new ska album! 🕴🎺🎷). Alex isn’t easy to get to know, but three things are clear. She navigates privilege effortlessly, is extremely well-read & culturally literate, and is a staunch…champagne socialist. . . While she’s not a prude, Alex despises so-called confessional writing that appeared to glorify sex, drugs, & excess. Growing up fancy w/parents in the film industry make such things seem pedestrian and so 90s…she is just so over it. The College gave Alex a small office adjacent to the defunct college radio station that went silent in ’95. Some podcasters want to do shock & awe. One pitched college students she knew who are sugar babies doing coke & X w/celebs. “If it’s such hot shit, string it to @pagesix. No & next.” She had a framed cross-stitch of her mom’s mantra: “Be Interesting…and have a fuckin’ point of view.” #notamanicpixiedreamgirl . .
