Super Mario RPG SNES/Switch Script Comparison:
This was already linked in my pinned post, but I'm posting it again mostly as an announcement now that it's basically done. It's still a bit messy, but for all practical purposes it's finished outside a few very specific formatting and menu bits. This contains every line in the text dumps of both versions of the game, placed side-by-side for ease of reading and marked with what degree of change from the original, if any, was made. I hope it's helpful to someone. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l8I9s3GwsRPpdmo72tTcjeLnBk7X_ElXPsVB4QV-01o/edit?gid=174644527#gid=174644527
Digimon Adventure 02 Episode 11: Original vs English Dub
Episode 11 is the biggest pet peeve in my eyes. This episode shows the fight of Daisuke and Takeru over their point of view in rescuing corrupted!Agumon. The idealistic Daisuke views that hurting digimon as his ally is something he cannot do, while the shell-shocked Takeru views that such violence is necessary to save Agumon (though it was more to Taichi's part). This feud eventually results to the fistfighting between both of them, which ironically Taichi and Yamato approve.
However, there is a big difference in terms of characterization between the two versions: original and English dub.
Scene 1-In the Train Original
Daisuke: But I... I wonder if I'll be able to attack Taichi-san's Digimon... Takeru: But we have no choice. Daisuke: What? Takeru: I don't want to do it, but there's no choice. If we don't fight, we can't save Agumon. We have no choice. Daisuke: Destroying Taichi-san's Agumon? What's that about having no choice? Takeru: Not destroying, just removing that Evil Spiral! Daisuke: But we couldn't, could we? We can't remove it unless we destroy the Digimon! Takeru: But that's what Taichi-san has decided! We all have to do our best! Daisuke: Easy for you to say!
English Dub
Daisuke/Davis: I'm not so sure, guys. What makes you think we can beat Ken and MetalGreymon? Takeru/TK: What makes you think we can't? Daisuke/Davis: Who asked you? Takeru/TK: I'm speaking from experience! We have to fight becuase if we don't, we'll never save Agumon! What are you afraid of, Davis? Daisuke/Davis: No one said anything about being afraid! I just don't want to see Agumon hurt, that's all! Takeru/TK: No one said we had to hurt him! All we have to do is get rid of the dark ring! Daisuke/Davis: And how do you propose we remove it, especially without hurting Agumon? Any bright ideas under that fancy hat? Takeru/TK: At least I'm trying, goggle-head! And don't make fun of my hat! Daisuke/Davis: That's it!
In original version, even the meek Takeru is forced to apply such violence for rescuing Agumon. Daisuke, though he is a rookie leader, has such idealistic view to not hurting digimon allied with him. That is why they have such feud and fight each other. In dub version, Takeru is shown as a total asshole who considers Daisuke as a moron based on his experience in Digital World, even insults him as "goggle head".
Scene 2-Battlefield Original
Daisuke: We can't make a move... Takeru: What are you waiting for!? Daisuke: What? Takeru: We have to get Patamon back! Daisuke: I already know that! Takeru:Then don't just stand there watching! Daisuke: Who's just watching!?
English Dub
Daisuke/Davis: I don't see how we can! Takeru/TK: We've got to try! Daisuke/Davis: Oh yeah? How? Takeru/TK: We can trap him by using you as bait! Daisuke/Davis: Me? Why do I have to be the one? Takeru/TK: We have to use some kind of bait we could do without! Daisuke/Davis: Oh, yeah? Well, we could easily do without your hat!
Such an asshole and heartless words coming from Takeru's mouth as an veteran in English dub who looks down Daisuke so badly. In original version, the hesitant Daisuke in terms of saving Patamon from Kaizer makes Takeru upset. I think Takeru just does not want to see Daisuke hesitating in such dire situation. He just want to see Daisuke doing his best, which is ironically ignored by the goggle boy who charges at him.
Scene 3-Pre-Digimental Up! Original
V-mon: Patamon... Patamon: V-mon, don't give up! Daisuke: Patamon! Takeru: Daisuke-kun! Don't worry about us. Go for MetalGreymon! Daisuke:Even though I couldn't understand how Takeru felt...Even though I couldn't save Patamon...Dammit...I'm so pathetic!!
English Dub
V-mon/Veemon: I owe you one! Patamon: Don't worry, I'm keeping track! Daisuke/Davis: Veemon, you okay? Takeru/TK: He is, but no thanks to you! Patamon risked his life to save Veemon, and all you did was sit there and watch! Daisuke/Davis: I...Now I'm beginning to understand what makes friendship so powerful! You have to be willing to do whatever it takes to protect them, because they would do the same for you! VEEMON, I'M YOUR FRIEND!
The scene before Daisuke obtains Friendship digimental is crucial in my eyes. In original, Takeru really supports Daisuke to not give up and do his best in focusing MetalGreymon, reassuring that he and other Chosen Children will be okay. On the other hand, English dub version shows the heartless side of Takeru who considers Daisuke as a weakling and a nuisance. Also, Daisuke's whiny monologue about friendship makes situation worse, while in original he realizes his error about viewing Takeru as someone who gets in his way, before cursing himself for his cowardliness.
Scene 4-Final Decision Original
Takeru: Daisuke-kun, fight together with Lighdramon! Daisuke: Together?
English Dub
Takeru/TK: Not sure?? This time, you're going to do things the right way! Daisuke/Davis: How can I?
Basically, both versions of Takeru encourage Daisuke to fight with MetalGreymon, but there is difference in terms of execution. In original, Takeru reassures Daisuke that he is not alone; he will fight together with Lighdramon to save Agumon. In dub, Takeru shows his "high-and-mighty" attitude to snap Daisuke that applying violence in saving allies is necessary, and poor Daisuke is hesitant even more.
