There. I've said it. And I feel better.

I've been meeting up with some younger and folks I've known for as long as 25 years. They're all quite successful and not what I would have thought of as "normies". And yet. I came face to face with just how different I was from them, in deep, structural ways.

They enjoy privileges never available to me. I am neurodivergent, and suffered in a dysfunctional, dirt poor family living in the middle of nowhere.I knew from before I was 5 years old there was no one coming to save me. No one. Not mother, not father, not brothers, not sisters, not priests, not police. Sit down, shut up, don't exist, don't need.

I've obviously survived and I've been somewhat successful. I'm not dead, I've never been jailed, I've paid my own way, I've worked, I've sacrificed, and I've done my best to help and support the next and downtrodden. I did my best to drive local and national politics to make life better for others like me and the world in general. I worked in corporate jobs and tried to introduce change and humanity and care to the groups I worked in. I called out oppression, prejudice, ignorance, and bias. I have done my best through my adult life to be the best person I know how to be, and to shield others from the kinds of unpleasantness I've had to endure, and provided the most welcoming opportunities for folks.

I'm no saint. I've self sabotaged more than once. I've descended into depression and self hatred and despair. I've taken my rage out on the undeserving. I've also been held back, managed out, fired, and laid off unjustly.

These acquaintances are worried about the leopards eating their faces. And utterly confused about why the leopards were hunting.

A part of me feels schadenfreude, TFW when you feel: satisfaction at others misfortune.

I also want to scream at them : "Welcome to the party, asshole! How's it feel to be at the mercy of unaccountable people with money, lethal weapons, social and institutional approval, and the full force of the law at their disposal? Not very fun, is it?"

This is what lots of us have felt all our lives. What I have felt all my life. I lived under threat of being involuntarily institutionalized, jailed, declared mentally incompetent,chemically castrated, subjected to reprogramming or conversion therapy, and more, for the first half of my life because I like men as sexual partners. Whole categories of jobs and professions were not options. Because I was gay. Any social encounter could lead to being beaten or killed with impunity. Because of the "gay panic" defense. "He made me afraid when he looked at me." No joke, generations got away with lynching and murder. How would that make you feel, folks, if J. Random Stranger could rape you, kill you in public, and be pronounced "not guilty" if it even made it to a court?

"Christians" wanted nothing to do with people like me. "Christians" called us child molesters. So did Jews, Muslims, and lots of other religious folks. "Liberal" institutions? A New York Times editorial in the early '80s called for people like me to be tattooed and put in camps. More than a few well known, well funded, public figures were thrilled that people like me were dying from AIDS -- god's punishment, they crowed. Fellow minorities? Black and Hispanic folks wanted nothing to do with us.

Most of my life, I've been terrified of groups of men larger than 2. Why? Because almost every physical threat I've experienced, every time I've been bashed or threatened? groups of men. The only groups of ordinary people more frightening than men? Boys.

So, let's talk about job and career opportunities. Government jobs? Not available, queers are enemies of the state. Military? Nope, no fucking queers because they make some men uncomfortable. Teacher? Nope. Will no one think of the children? Religion, even as a parishioner? Nope, sinner! Public displays of affection? Nope, you disgusting fucking queers! Out anywhere? Nope, not even inside your house. Your house was your castle. Except if you were gay, then Johnny Law could jail you for anal sex between consenting adults in the privacy of their own home.

Does any of this sound familiar?

This was my life. This is my life. A bunch of nasty people using the power of the state and the normative society to deny me basic human rights.

So excuse me if I'm unimpressed you, yours, and your way of life feel threatened by the leopards. The leopards have threatened me and mine all my life. I'm glad you finally understand the danger, though. It's unfortunate it's taken a personal encounter with injustice. Sadly, there's more where that came from. So much more.
