hey, matthew gets one friend, maybe two, in the later books! :D but i know what you mean, matthew is very intentionally rootless and unattached. even though there are factions, we don't get to be in their mess so much, because matthew doesn't engage with them on that same level

​yeah and this is unfortuantely the weakest aspect of the books, and again: i love the first two Swift books, the prose and ideas are so good i'm actively jealous of them

but the thing that makes TDF good (or could have been good) is the sense of Chicago as a community, how everyone knows someone and the way people link, how no matter how dire things seem there is always someone who can be called in to assist and who that person is is often the most interesting part

and honestly a broad cast list makes the deficits of Harry as the protagonist easier to handle because he's surrounded by other people

RIP to Maker's Marks, probably doomed to abandonment, though I would like to finish the next chapter, at least. This is how the chapter after that would start:

Legolas of Mirkwood could move silently even for a Silvan elf. But he didn't hide himself as he fell in beside Celebrimbor, as the Fellowship trekked through the foothills of the Misty Mountains. Through the land that had once been covered in holly trees and joy.

"The stones here remember you," he observed.

"I know," Celebrimbor said, and did not grit his teeth.

"They missed you, I think," Legolas added blithely.

"I am aware."

“Straight to suppression,” Xue Yang said. “No appeasement? How callous of you, Song-daozhang.” 

Song Lan hoped his expression of disgust carried what he thought about the idea of giving Xue Yang anything that he wanted. Xue Yang laughed, the sound strange and wild. 

“It’s not going to work,” he said. “Just so you know.” 

Song Lan was growing increasingly tired of these one-sided conversations. 

“I mean,” Xue Yang said, “you can keep trying. But it’s not going to get you anywhere.” 

The hateful thing was that Song Lan believed him. He wished he didn’t – wished that he thought Xue Yang was bluffing – but it didn’t even particularly surprise him. Of course Xue Yang would resist conventional means. He already had.
