INTRODUCTION
Congratulations, you have found my journal. if you have made it this far then you may have a chance of finding "The way out". Think of this book as a guide from someone who made it out. I am going to tell you the story of a time I got lost in a place that doesn’t exist. I was a young girl of only seventeen when I was unlucky enough to find myself in the hellish plane where you are now, “The Backrooms”. It is my hope that this chronicle of my experience may someday help another poor soul who is so unfortunate as to find themselves in the same situation I did. I got out, but not many are as lucky as I am. I will not tell you my name, I can’t tell anyone my name anymore, I can’t write it nor can I whisper it to myself in the quiet hours of the evening. If I do, They will find me; an unfortunate consequence of one of the many mistakes I made during my time in the backrooms, but we will get to that, all in due time. For the sake of this journal, you will know me only as “Lucky”.

One day, I was unloading some files in the back of a long forgotten home video store I once worked at when I tripped on my shoelace and “no-clipped” out of reality. No-clipping is a very rare thing, one in a trillion or so they tell me, the molecules of my body hit the floor in just the perfect alignment. The best way I can explain it is that the stuff that makes up my body fell through reality into an unforgivable pocket between our world and whatever comes after it. No-clipping feels much like blacking out while simultaneously falling into TV static and whitenoise.
So I, like most people who wind up in that ungodly place, found myself on the excessively yellow, level zero of what I had been told were called “The Backrooms”. Filled with different levels of varying nature and scale of deadliness, it was not a place you wanted to end up...ever. This was the place where the remote goes when the couch “eats it”, the dark corners of closets and alleyways, the shadow in the corner of the eye that has your inner voice pleading,“Don’t look” .
Here, the dark things that have no place in our world or the next go to stew in an unnatural non-existence. “The Backrooms” should never have been allowed to exist, I am of the opinion that they are an accident that slipped through the cracks in the fabric of reality. Though there’s a many number of theories you can sift through, but unless you have been there, you can only play pretend at understanding this place. Everything inside of it ceases to be beyond the borders of its collective consciousness, in our world, to us, it is just that, an eccentric fable. Certainly no place for a human girl. Â
Needless to say, panic engulfed me instantly as I timidly pushed myself off the damp, foul smelling carpet, the buzz of fluorescent light harsh on my eyes, I rubbed them fiercely. When I reopened them however, I was distraught to find my worst fears confirmed, I’d somehow no-clipped into level zero. An overwhelming nausea overtook my gut. My entire body ached and tingled like every cell of my being was protesting at my being in this anachronistic plane. I did not belong there. It was as unnatural and foreign to me as I was to it, like two positive magnets forced inside of each other. At that time in my life I had done a little bit of research on “The Backrooms'' though nothing extensive. My friend Ava was the expert, I always thought it was all bullshit. He was so gonna rub it in my face when I got out, if I got out.
I knew that I wasn’t supposed to touch whatever viscous substance was seeping through the carpet, that made the whole place reek like gasoline and wet cats, a less than pleasant stench. I also knew I needed to keep checking my watch, “To stay sane” he’d told me. Ava said the real danger of level zero was a loss of sanity, something about the constant buzzing in the lights. Keeping the time would help me hold on to it longer. On the other hand I knew this level was not lacking in entities, the “living” things that inhabited the various levels of this place, some say “The Backrooms” are an entity in and of itself. Although many sources said there were none in level zero, that it was like a friendly lobby to gain one's bearings before moving on, it was best not to take any chances. As I tried to focus on keeping time and avoiding looking at the incessantly buzzing and obnoxiously bright fluorescent lights placed inconsistently throughout the endless halls, I studied the horrendous wallpaper. It was exactly like in the pictures Ava had shown me, an uncomfortable cream yellow, too light to be a true yellow but too yellow to be a true cream, with barely perceptible art deco patterns collared into it that were decidedly unfitting for a doctors office but not quite extravagant enough for a hotel lobby. The only place this wallpaper belonged was indeed this wretched nonplace.
I tried to think back to all the things I had read and what Ava has excitedly blurbed to me on our lunch breaks together. While this level was safe for the time being, it would not stay that way. I had not yet encountered the unnaturally thin, tall, horrifying and overall violently discomforting entity some said lived within the endless halls of this level. The level was completely void of anything beyond the floors, the walls, and the fluorescent lights that seemed to buzz louder and louder in my ears the longer I wandered. As far as I remembered there were a few ways I could get out of level zero, I could take the one in a billion chance I might no-clip through the walls to level negative one, which wouldn’t be terrible as it acted as a gateway to a lot of other levels, but if I stayed to long there I could go blind and Ava had always told me it was just best to avoid the negative levels. Alternately I could try and find a break in the floor which I knew were scattered here and there throughout the level, but they would either take me to level 27 of which I knew next to nothing beyond the fact that it was inhabited by something called a “smiler” or it would throw me into the void so that option was not favorable. On the other hand, the longer I wandered here the more susceptible I would be to the “manilla room” in which entraps weary level zero victims in a room with no windows or doors, just horrid manilla wallpaper not unlike the wallpaper in the rest of level zero and as far as I knew, there wasn't a way out.
Speaking of weary, I realized my legs had grown uncommonly sore for the short amount of time I had been wandering, though it had been a few minutes since I checked my watch… shit. Shit. Shit.
“Shit.” I cursed quietly. Looking at my watch would reveal it had not been a few minutes but rather six hours. A migraine pounded in my skull, the sudden and painful onslaught made me wince, squinting my eyes shut and pinching the bridge of my nose. How did I miss a developing migraine? I’d had chronic migraines for years. I could smell one coming from a mile away by age ten. Only then did I realize I felt very thirsty and very tired. As my eyes became leaded with exhaustion, I knew I had to keep going, the only way out of the back rooms is through “The Way Out '', the only known exit which spawns at random on any level in any form but is always shrouded in intense yellow light. All I knew is that Ava told me that the best way to survive is by never staying on any level too long and always keeping my eyes peeled for “The Way Out”.
A garbled noize from behind my left side lurched me from deep in thought, the sound was like tv static and almost blended in with the obtrusive buzzing of the fluorescent lights.Had I not been so afraid, I may not have heard it.
Whirling around, I saw the long bony arm of menacing, sticky darkness that seemed to glitch with the very fabric of the air, emerging from behind one of the corridor walls, it was maybe thirty feet from me. Panic flared in my chest like a wildfire, I couldn't think, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move. It was different when I thought I was alone, terrifying but secluded. Now I was no longer a lost wanderer, but rather a caged mouse dropped in an anacondas cage with no foreseeable way out. I was glued to my spot, staring helplessly as the sepulchral creature emerged from behind the wall, a sibilant child's stick figure given life. Long spindly arms down to the floor with no visible structure beyond the joint I imagined functioned like an elbow and the indistinguishable black matter that made up its entire stick-like body. I never understood how one could be “frozen with fear” not until that moment, surrounded by the stifling yellow walls that seemed to get closer and closer as I stared at that creature, wrenched from the nightmares of a monster. I was so consumed by terror that I couldn't remember the rules of this particular entity, was I supposed to run? Stand still? Maybe it was too late for any of it.
I got my answer when it turned around with an unintelligible shriek. I couldn’t tell that its back had been to me because it had no eyes, the creature's head was merely a mass of black darkness lacking in any distinguishable form. The unholy sound it emitted skook me to my core, to this day, I still have nightmares about that nauseating shriek. The sheer volume of it blocked out the hum of the fluorescent lights which had become deafening up until that moment. I felt myself begin to run, the burn already present in my legs from apparent hours of walking did not seem to affect my speed. I know now I have adrenaline to thank for that. My worn down black converse whirled me around corners, vaulted me through hallways- The creature let out another terrible shriek- that sent me charging faster down another corridor. There was no discernable way out, every hallway looked the same, lined with the same increasingly pungent and appalling moist carpet, and that horrendous yellow wallpaper. God I hated that wallpaper. I vowed that if I survived, I would never look at yellow wallpaper again. My breath became ragged but I didn’t dare to spare a look behind me, the screeches and thumps of that horrid scribble creature was clue enough that it had not given up the chase. I knew was running out of breath, already exhausted from hours on my feet and refusal to sit on that foul smelling carpet. Every breath was like fire in my throat as I felt my limbs desperately pleading with me to give up and give in to the sweet release of death. As I rounded another corner I could almost hear Ava and his lilting laughter,
“Really Lucky? Killed by a level zero entity? I taught you better than that, stupid”
Anguished tears pricked at my eyes, I didn’t want to die, not like this. No no no no no no no I couldn’t die like this, what if dying here meant no one would remember me? Did my being here mean I ceased to exist there? I couldn’t die alone in this place. Where would my soul go if I died here? Icy hot chills creeped up my spine and into my neck, until they reached the top of my head, pricking my scalp as if death were giving me a loving caress. I knew the creature was closer, my blood ran cold and dread pooled like led at the bottom of my stomach, I could practically feel its fantom talons of viscid darkness around my neck. Choked sobs added themselves to my symphony of ragged breathing as my pace began to miraculously increase somehow. Deep down I knew the only reason I ran faster was not because of the hellish creature I was currently being chased by, but rather the quiet tremor in my soul that said-
“Give up Lucky, let it take you. Sweet thing, stop fighting.”
That tremor scared me more than any monster ever could hope to. Another scream tore out into the endless chasm of yellow wallpaper, only this time, it was my own. Diluted with terror and determination it was the scream of a human on the brink of derangement.
“PLEASE GOD PLEASE. DON’T KILL ME YET.”
As if God would've done anything to save me. But I had reached my limit of sanity, whether I wanted to or not. My mind and body had about fifteen seconds before they completely gave out and I was consumed by the thing that at this point had grazed my hair three times. Whatever it was made of had stuck to the back of my neck and now mixed with my sweat, dripping down my back, burning my skin.
Whatever I was going to do next might have very well been the last thing I ever did. So with one last scream that was a mix between a war cry and a deranged sob I shut my eyes so tight it hurt and charged head first into one of the abhorrent, sickeningly yellow walls, praying for a no-clip.
Ha, Prayer, what a funny concept.
