4. Are there any other fic writers you admire? If so, who and why?
SO MANY!
Iāll just listā¦ likeā¦ five? I originally put three but then I discovered that it is. Not Possible. Iāll rec one work from each too :D (this list is non-exhaustiveā¦ there are a lot more other writers I really look up to, and picking just a few was Death. but these are the writers I will, without fail, pick up and throw their fics at to whoever is just entering the fandom.
aritzen: Rits has this really amazing way of crafting a story and subtly pulling you in, without you realising that youāve been pulled in?! Her writing comes off as aloof as first, but she builds everything really methodically, and before you know it sheās constructed a whole story around you, brick by brick. Iād recommend Midnight Railway, which is my favourite from her. I think Iāve reread it 6 times or more at this point?
carafin: I think Fin is one of the HQ fandom staple writers, almost everyone has probably read her fics at least once?! She writes gen really really really well, and her other!! fics!!! itās like sheās weaving magic with her words and the way she writes interactions!!! all her characters have voices of their own, and every single one of her fics, whether AU or canonverse, are all so real and vibrant to me *-* when my friend first got into HQ, I threw Finās fics at her first before anybody elseās orz. Have her gen!Karasuno fic - Sunburst. Ā
Tsucchi: how could I not mention Mel when theyāre the one who singlehandedly dragged me into Ennotana and Asadai/suga hell? :D Mel does this thing where their charactersā voices are all so clear andā¦ audible, and they have this really good handle on repetition and parallels, which Iām an absolute sucker for - their Asadai, his ace, really displays their skill at drawing parallel references. And not to mention how much care they put into every character, every chapter and every fic, to bring out the mood and atmosphere and the nitty-gritty of the universe theyāre writing about.
themorninglark: another HQ fandom staple writer! Larkās writing has never failed to take my breath away. From her long fics to her short fics, I can say with certainty that Iāve stayed up in bed reading all her works because I couldnāt put my phone down - not when I wanted to know what other magic she still had in store for me. She says a lot in very little words, and I think thatās the most beautiful of all - that in the span of less than a thousand words, I can visualise everything so clearly and feel feelings so deep.Ā
Iād recommend caesura, which is just 633 words long but portrays the Miya brothers so beautifully, ohh my heart.
clandestine7: Maya!!!!! probably one of the first writers that ever made me go āthis, this writer is my favourite writer nowā. she doesnāt write for HQ but her writing was pretty much what sealed the deal for one of my OTPs in DGM. I canāt quite put my finger on what I love about her writing, but itās equal parts characterisation and world building and justā¦ how she brings emotions acrossā¦ itās like Iām there, witnessing her characters interact, feeling what they feel, watching the world around them as though Iām not just reading words on a screen.
If youāre into DGM, Staples of Vocabulary is one of my all-time favourite fics, regardless of fandom. (itās DGM-canonverse though, soā¦ u_u)
16. Do you have structured ideas of how your story is supposed to go, or make it up as you write?
Nowadays Iāve been trying to keep my fics - especially the plot-heavy ones - organised, so most of the time I do have an idea of whatās going to happen - I know what my endgame is, per se, and I know the major events that will lead up to the endgame. But the āmajor eventsā are often ā¦ not enough so I almost always end up making up new things as I go anyway.Ā
But Iāve kind of realised that I donāt really work well with structuring my fics beforehand, because apparently it gives me extreme writing inertia, like: āIāve written it all now, no more writing for me!ā when actually ā¦ all Iāve done is write down my plot points and explaining to myself how I got from A to Bā¦ orz
Of course, there are the odd fics like snippets and short oneshots where I literally go, āOh, I wanna write this sceneā and *snaps fingers* I write it without thinking about anything else. Iād love to have more of those fics, tbh u_uĀ
I should (and would!) try writing like that more, except that I know Iāll more often than not write myself into a corner that I donāt know how to get out of.
