Today is Tank Girl Day! On this day in 1995, Tank Girl hit theaters. While it was not appreciated in its time, this is a film that means a great deal to me. I'm grateful it's getting a renaissance now, but I wish it could have been appreciated upon release. I am not joking or exaggerating when I say that this movie healed something in me the first time I watched it. It is still encouraging to me as a weird girl who never fit, but found her own tank to drive and friends to ride with eventually. Thank you, Lori. Thank you, Rachel. I've written and recorded a lot about Tank Girl since I saw it for the first time in 2023. This is what started it all, my last assignment for Sci-Fi 5:
It started as an indie comic with a cult audience, but on this day in 1995 a movie version tried to introduce a whole new audience to #TankG
I also talked about Tank Girl on Perry Constantine's Superhero Cinephiles podcast in August of 2023. Available wherever you get your podcasts:
When I joined the Video Store Podcast in 2024, my very first episode was about Lori Petty, whom I dubbed the Queen of Quirky. Obviously, I recommended Tank Girl:
Then last year, for the film's 30th anniversary, I joined my podcast sister, the Jet Girl to my Tank Girl, Violet Hammond, for this episode of MovieVersaries, where we discussed the film and how the only thing that's aged poorly is the original criticism for the film. And with that, I say Happy Tank Girl day to you. And thank you, Lori. Thank you, Rachel.
