“Hey, can we take a walk outside?” Ben asks, the loud music in the small club making his ears ring. Caleb turns to him, eyes hardening instantly, and Ben hates that look, he detests it with every fiber of his being.
“Well, look who it is- who let you in?” The words are said sardonically, and Ben thinks that maybe Caleb meant to deliver them with a sort of sarcastic smile, but the curl of his lips are much closer to a grimace. “Aren’t you the one who cost us all of our jobs today?”
“I’m going to make it right.” He promises, and Caleb turns to him, angrily.
“Haven’t you done enough?” The shorter man hisses, and Ben squares his jaw. It wasn’t his fault that his father decided to sell the dispatch, and there was absolutely no way in hell that he was getting anywhere near that money, anyways (but it was your fault that you dropped out, it’s your fault you’re in this situation in the first place).
Caleb reaches for yet another shot of alcohol, but Ben takes it and drinks it up himself, the small amount already making his vision swim.
“Haven’t you had enough?” Ben counters.
“Says the boy who has it all.” Caleb snaps, and Ben falters momentarily- he’d always known that his best friend had the power to hurt him, he just never thought that his theory would ever be tested.
“That’s not fair.” He says, quietly.
“Then here’s a thought: why don’t you run home to your dad? Because, you know what, Ben? That man just loves to remind that I will never be good enough for his family.” Caleb turns to look at him fully, and Ben sees the same pain in his eyes reflected onto the other’s. “That I’ll never be good enough for you.”
He’s stunned for a moment, except he really isn’t, and now is not the time to reevaluate the entire argument- in their inebriated state, their anger was magnified, and they couldn’t have stopped yelling if they wanted to.
“You don’t know me.” He snipes, teeth gritting.
“Poor you.”
Ben feels his face getting hot, and his hands begin to shake, and he turns away from Caleb because he can’t look at him anymore, not without wanting to slap him or kiss him- and, honestly, neither of those decision would be wise right now.
“I thought you were different.”
Caleb pauses, and Ben can feel both of their regret creeping in, and, god, he never should have come here. He’s pulled out of his thoughts by the sound of a shot glass being slammed down on the table, and Ben catches a glimpse of Caleb biting his lip and standing up from his chair.
“Cheers.”
Ben let’s out a dry laugh.
“Salud.”
