Burnout Is Not a Personal Failure
There’s a lie we’ve normalized.
“If you’re exhausted, you just need to be more resilient.”
But burnout isn’t a character flaw. It’s a system design problem.
No amount of grit can fix a structure that demands constant urgency, punishes honesty, and treats rest like weakness.
Especially in education.
You can’t ask teachers to create safe, regulated spaces for students while keeping them in perpetual fight or flight. You can’t expect empathy from people who are barely surviving the day.
Healthy systems don’t rely on heroics. They rely on sustainability.
They build in pauses. They reward truth telling. They design work so humans can stay human.
The most effective leaders I’ve seen don’t push harder. They listen deeper.
They understand that when adults feel supported, students feel safe. And when people feel safe, real learning begins.
That’s not soft. That’s strategic.
