#school elections

I know voting might feel very pointless right now, but every Democrat we can get in office is another roadblock, another obstacle, something slowly down the regime from consolidating total control. Republicans' focus on consolidating power down ballot is part of why they've been able to dominate America even with minority support, as they can gerrymander states, obstruct in Congress, etc. We need to do much better here.

Ojamajo Doremi Season 3, Episode 32

In spite of being just a ‘normal’ episode I enjoyed this one. It’s been too much time since the last time I watched it, but the rivalry depicted between Reika and Masato for head boy/girl is realistic and wonderful (and Masaharu later too). Both characters are very mean (Reika for selfish, Masato for know-it-all), but have their reasons for that. As always, Momoko is the kindest person of all, proposing Reika as her class representative even if some of their classmates may think she is kind of crazy for that (did I mention Momoko is my favourite character of the main five? Haha x33).

  I am so uninvolved with school politics I might as well be oblivious to their existence. Until today, election day, when they pull us out of our classrooms for an hour to vote for committee this and committee that. Speeches filled with upbeat buzz-sentences like “high school is the best time of our lives” (I hope not) and “This school is the best one around” (have you been to all the others?).

  I don’t know one single person at my school so the faces on the stage mean nothing to me, as my face sitting alone in the audience means nothing to them. I know it is a bit dramatic, but all I can think about is how unimportant it all is. I guess that’s because everyone makes it seem so important.

  Now I am sitting in the library beside one of the nominees for Grade 12 School President. Just 20 minutes ago I sat in the audience as she commanded the stage. People are filing by congratulating her on her performance and wishing her luck. I’ve heard speeches from her before, she has been incredibly involved and very popular at the school since ninth grade. Funny how different we are, her and I. Even in the way we look. She is dressed in a pink frilly top and white skirt, her face plastered with makeup and her hair highlighted with silvery blonde. And I sit in a black hoodie and jeans, my face pale and hair dark. I talk to no one, she talks to everybody. But we are the same age and have grown up in parallel universes, and our lives hold the same value. After high school we have equal opportunity. It puts things in perspective to think this way. I always tell my friends to step back and look at the bigger picture before getting ensnared in petty situations, wisdom as old as time itself yet rarely taken.
