Here three grass species create a range of colours and textures in the autumn landscape of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, with Pennisetum orientale (oriental fountain grass), Schizachyrium scoparium (little blue stem, prairie grass) and Andropogon gerardii (big blue stem, beard grass). They all grow well in this open, sunny site with free draining soil conditions.

In an unmown field on spring's first beautiful day, this Little Bluestem sways gracefully in the late afternoon sun, and readies for a new season of growth. #grasses #schizachyrium #meadows #mindfulness #nature (at Granby, Connecticut)

The deciduous prairie grass Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem grass, broom beard grass, prairie grass, wire grass) produces mounds of sea green to bluish foliage with upright flowerheads, 60cm-90cm tall. These will all turn a bright coppery orange in autumn. The plants need full sun and well drained poor soil for best growth. Here the foliage forms a subtle veil for Echinacea pallida (cone flower).
