99). In 1984, it was reported that the YMCA was the largest operator of swimming pools in the world. The YMCA of the USA created a new advertising campaign for local associations, based on the slogan "America's Favorite Swimming Instructor."

78). In 1973. under the leadership of Grace Reynolds. the YMCA began its first national emphasis on aquatic activities for the disabled. This was a three-year  U.S. Government-funded activity called Project Aquatics.

84). The 1975 National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championship conducted at the Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Fort Lauderdale, Florida became the world's largest swimming championship, with over 1.500 boys and girls participating. These entries came from 180 YMCAs in 25 states.

71). A program for preschoolers was introduced in Denver for 3- to 5-year-olds. called Tadpoles.

56). A YMCA Sea School was founded in 1966 at Albany, Georgia, to study geography, oceanography, nautics, and aquatics related to teaching SCUBA techniques.

28). In 1932, Dr. John Brown, Jr., reported more than a million swimmers a year in the YMCAs.

14). The YMCA aquatic program was started through the efforts of William H. Ball, then serving as the physical director of the Detroit YMCA, during the winter of 1906-17. He was approached by George Corsan of Toronto, Canada. who agreed to come to Detroit to teach swimming to the youngsters of that association. He did so each winter up until 1910.

8). The first YMCA lifesaving corps was organized in 1904 at Camp Dudley in upstate New York.

1). The first YMCA swimming pool, then known as the ‘swimming bath,’ was included in the building of the Brooklyn Central YMCA in New York in 1885. The pool measured 14 by 45 feet and was 5 feet deep.

3). In 1885 it was reported that there were 17 YMCA pools in existence. In 1900 that number had risen to 100.
