A podcast rec for Shawols
I've been a fan of K-pop for over ten years now. My first exposure was BoA and from there it was Big Bang, TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls Generation.
Shinee was the first group I've followed since their debute. When they debuted I was still a baby Kpop fan so I didn't realize it was pronounced Shiny, I thought it was pronounced SHINee (like your shin). In my defense I read the name before I heard it and I was sixteen.
I remember where I was when I learned of Jonghyun's passing. It was 7:42 am on a Monday and it was my day off from work. I had opened my phone to google something and saw the articles on my phone.
I thought "Is this real life? This can't be true." I searched all over the internet for proof that it wasn't real. And it was. I spent the entire day sobbing nothing could offer me comfort. I couldn't even talk to those close to me about my grief because they wouldn't understand or care. I still can't talk to them about it.
I was completely alone in my grief over someone I have admired for ten years. It felt like a terrible cosmic joke that someone who's light and music has helped me through months and years of depression died of the same illness.
He helped me so much and I couldn't help him. And I know it's not my fault but I don't think I can ever really forgive myself for that.
Shortly after his passing I learned someone was planning on making a podcast much like Blue Night Radio. Her name is Bella and she hosts Shawol Blue Night Radio Podcast on SoundCloud.
It's a weekly podcast where she gives us the latest Shinee news, reads listeners letters, plays Jonghyun's and Shinee's music, offers advice, reads her own letters to him and plays songs that remind us of him. And she does it all in a calm voice.
It's an excellent podcast that as given her listeners a safe space to heal and come together. There aren't words to describe how her podcast has helped me.
Recently she has added a new part of her show where we read a book and watch a movie that Jonghyun loved.
We watched the movie Your Name and read the book The Metamorphosis by Fraz Kafka. The book being read currently is Kafka by the sea.
Please join us every week and listen to Bella's calming voice greet us "Hello Everyone, welcome back to another Shawol Blue Night Radio. This is your host Bella and if you listened to last week's podcast hello again and thank you for coming back. To any new listeners this podcast is based on Jonghyun's Blue Night Radio broadcast that he hosted for three years. A space where the physical has nothing to do with us. I hope this space that belongs to you and me be the site for anyone to rest in tranquility."
Bella is a wonderful person for everything she has done and all the hard work she does.
