“Save the Mekong.org” is a website created by the public who share the common opinion of protecting the river from further dam construction. Their information page on Facebook states, “Join us and help us keep the Mekong flowing freely. The Mekong River is under threat from plans for eleven big hydropower dams on the mainstream that place at risk millions of people who depend upon the river for their food, income and culture.” Headings such as “Laos pushes ahead with Mekong dam without consulting neighbours” and “Laos government’s decision this week to proceed with the Don Sahong dam […], bypassing the Mekong River Commission (MRC) process for consultation.” are geared to fuel the community who support the saving of the Mekong to get involved. The Save the Mekong website is covered in a blend of continuous updates based on government and political decisions, memories and videos of the Mekong, and environmental reference links concerning the building of dams. Although this public blog and forum is great for governmental updates concerning decisions, it is hard to find the facts, data, and support for the reasoning behind their position on the pages without clinking links to other websites that lead to dead ends. It could simply be a huge population of terribly misinformed civilians afraid of the aesthetic changes that a dam system would present.
