Are you man enough?

It begins with an alternate ending to the episode "Cast Out": Snotlout is expelled from the dragon academy by Hiccup, just as happens in the original episode. Before Snotlout flees Berk, Spitelout finds out about the "temporary expulsion" and doesn't like hearing about it. Snotlout had already lost the chance to become a better leader than Hiccup; this was humiliation enough for his family, who worked hard to make him a warrior and the best option to become the chief of Berk. And now, being expelled from the dragon academy was going beyond shameful for the entire Jorgenson clan name. Not even the mad Thorston twins had been expelled, and their son had been. It was ridiculous.

Snotlout knew exactly how his father would react when he returned home, so he tried to go after Hiccup to ask him to let him return to the dragon academy and pretend that the fight never happened, perhaps even promising that nothing like that would ever happen again. But when he gets near the training arena, Snotlout accidentally overhears a conversation between the other riders without him, and then he understands that none of them even care about the idea of ​​him no longer being part of the team. They were all there together as if they didn't have one less rider, and as if it didn't make a difference. Snotlout overhears Hiccup talking to Astrid about him not seeming good enough to continue as a dragon rider, and maybe he never really would be. Hiccup believed that perhaps he had made the wrong decision in introducing Snotlout to Hookfang. He regretted giving Snotlout a dragon to ride and letting him be part of the team. A person who doesn't understand anything about teamwork and puts the lives of their teammates at risk without any remorse is not a person. That Hiccup should have accepted into the group.

Hearing what Hiccup really thinks about him and about regretting showing him his own dragon, Snotlout feels anger, and a strange feeling in his chest at his cousin's words, and he makes the decision to flee Berk. Nobody cared about him. Before, when Hiccup was still considered useless, maybe they considered him somewhat important, but now that Hiccup had become the first and only Viking to have a Night Fury, end a decades-long war, kill the Red Death, and even have a metal leg, Snotlout wasn't so important anymore, or maybe he never had been. Berk perhaps only pretended he was tolerable because after Hiccup, he was the only option to succeed him as chief when Stoick was gone.

There was nothing left for him to continue on Berk, so he left with Hookfang. At first it was frightening; he thought about going back and forgetting that crazy idea, but he didn't. Here, he doesn't meet Alvin on the island. In this version, Snotlout simply leaves with Hookfang and doesn't return. The episode continues almost the same way, but without Snotlout's participation. The riders thought Snotlout had been captured by Dagur and the Berserkers, but after rescuing Stoick, the chief says he hasn't seen Snotlout anywhere. Days and years pass without any sign that Snotlout will return or that he is even still alive. Hiccup carried the guilt of having done all that. The Jorgenson family was absolutely certain that their son had died, and Spitelout obviously blamed the Haddocks for his son's departure.

Snotlout spent this time exploring the rest of the archipelago alone with Hookfang, to earn money and avoid ending up dead on a random island. Initially, he only did odd jobs on some islands in exchange for money and food, but he eventually grew tired of it and devised another plan. He used the knowledge he had learned about dragons at the academy and from Hookfang to start capturing dragons to trade with hunters. It was at a dragon auction that Snotlout met Krogan and officially began working with him. Snotlout lied about his name to avoid being recognized as someone from Berk, let his hair grow to help him blend in, and also stopped wearing his helmet. This may have been a terrible decision, as Snotlout continued to be struck by lightning. Luckily, he wasn't killed by it, but being struck many times has its consequences, and Snotlout's body is covered in lightning scars. He also ended up losing sight in one eye because of it.

"I can feel it: today is our lucky day!" Eret, the leader of the dragon hunters, exclaimed excitedly as he finished disembarking from the ship onto the newly discovered island.

"Are you sure.. there are dragons here?" one of the men asked, sounding unconvinced by Eret’s words. "We’ve been going from island to island for hours without catching a single dragon. Dontcha think it’s time to maybe head back and tell Drago we didn't find any?"

Eret felt a chill run down his spine at the mention of that name, but he quickly composed himself, ready to retort against the stupidity of such a suicidal idea, a sound drifted out from the forest.

Everyone froze instantly; it was a growl (or perhaps something akin to a scream) unlike anything they had ever heard before.

Eret didn't care; if it was a new type of dragon, it might please Drago even more. So, while his men were still debating whether it had been a dragon or merely some strange forest beast, Eret was already venturing into the woods, sword drawn, with an arrogant smirk, he moved cautiously, scanning the forest shadows to locate the creature that had made the sound.

"Come on... you can't hide for long." The sound of snapping branches behind him made Eret’s smile widen; the hunter turned toward the noise, readying his sword to take down the dragon.

Drago always wanted the dragons alive, but Eret wasn't foolish enough to enter the woods with a potential dragon on the loose unarmed. As he drew closer to the sound amidst the tree shadows, he felt the strange sensation of a piercing gaze watching him. Eret stared back into the forest, searching for the source of that feeling, until he finally spotted something glinting in the shadows. The moment their eyes met, the hunter’s smug smile vanished, replaced by a look of confused bewilderment as he lowered his sword, unable to believe what he was seeing. "What-"

Before he could finish his sentence, the "dragon" knocked him to the ground in a surprise attack.

The creature–actually a man.–had pounced on Eret like a wild animal and was now straddling him, snarling right in his face while pinning him down with his body weight. All Eret could do was blink, trying to make sense of the situation; the strange man above him kept staring down with blindingly blue eyes, baring his teeth mere inches from Eret’s face. In that position, the hunter could feel the other man’s breath against his skin, and their noses brushed together a few times.

Eret struggled with all his might to break free from the stranger's weight; once he finally managed to shove the man off, he scrambled to his feet, bracing for a fight. After all, what the hell was another man doing in the woods, attacking him for absolutely no reason?

Eret then turned his attention to the stranger: a mass of hair covered nearly half his face, and his clothes looked improvised or stolen from some merchant, none of the garments seemed to go together, as if each had been taken from a different person. His attire was torn in several places, but what likely left Eret most confused and intrigued was the fact that the man was kneeling on the ground with his hands pressed against the earth, a posture that made it seem as though Eret were facing a small dragon rather than another human being.

It was bizarre; the stranger stared at Eret without saying a word, emitting only snarls and grunts. Eret had no idea what was happening, nor did he know why he was so curious about the strange little man before him.

"What the hell are you?" Eret started to ask, stepping toward the young man again, but after just one step, the man bared his teeth and let out an even louder growl (if that were even possible) His eyes shifted from Eret to the sword in his hand; it took the hunter a moment to grasp the meaning, but he eventually realized and slowly dropped the weapon to the ground. "Look, I don't know who you are, but I didn't come here to fight, whatever kind of person you might be, okay?" Eret waited in silence for a response, but there was nothing… just absolute silence, devoid of the growls and noises from before. After getting no reply, Eret gave it some thought and decided to test a theory. "Do you happen to understand what I'm saying?" Once again, there was no verbal answer, but he did receive a nod.

"Right, look, I don't have time to deal with whatever this shit is; I've got a real dragon to ca’ch." Eret turned to grab the sword he’d left on the ground, only to find it simply gone. "What the hell!?" He barely had time to react before a growl..

A real dragon's growl sounded right behind him.

The last thing he saw before the tail of a Monstrous Nightmare slammed him into a tree, knocking him unconscious on impact. was the stranger standing before him again, dragon at his side; then, Eret’s eyes rolled back as the throbbing pain in his back and head took over.

"Why take so long to kill him?" Hookfang growled at his little brother, looking with utter disdain at the human he had just flung against the tree.

Snotlout shouted back, but then his gaze shifted to the hunter's unconscious form, and he felt something strange in his chest. He approached slowly, ignoring Hookfang’s clear disapproval.

The dragon didn't like the idea and wanted his brother to keep a safer distance from the potential threat. Snotlout paid little heed and decided to investigate who Eret was. While absentmindedly fiddling with the layers of hide, which didn't seem to belong to Eret himself, but rather to another creature. Snotlout’s fingers brushed against an exposed patch of Eret’s chest. Eret let out a low grunt at the sudden touch but remained unconscious.

Driven by curiosity, Snotlout let his fingers touch the skin again; it was different from the scales his nest-mates had. He noticed something even stranger: a mark on the hunter’s skin, a mark he was certain he had seen before on other dragons, dead dragons. It appeared to be a fresh scar; much of the skin was still a vivid red, and it looked painful.

When Snotlout lightly touched the mark on the man (who had previously only been muttering but now wore a pained expression with tense shoulders) he pulled his fingers away as if burned by fire. Snotlout leaned in again, this time until his nose brushed against the unconscious man's cheek; he sniffed, trying to detect anything amiss, but all he could smell was the strong scent of sea salt, though there was something else mixed in, something Snotlout couldn't quite decipher. He would have continued his investigation if not for Hookfang, who was rapidly losing patience with his little brother’s curiosity (which rivaled that of a meddlesome Terrible Terror hatchling) Snotlout was about to complain about Hookfang’s impatience when the sound of footsteps echoed from across the forest, followed by the arrival of voices, so many voices that Snotlout scrambled back into a defensive stance, his hands and fingernails digging into the grass. Hookfang went on alert too, but he reacted faster than Snotlout; without hesitation or gentleness, he grabbed his brother’s small body with his hind legs and took off into the treetops, staying out of sight of any intruders in the woods. Snotlout thrashed and snarled curses at the Monstrous Nightmare, who simply snorted smoke in his face, clearly not caring one bit about his complaints.

A look at how each of Snotlout's friends fared after his "disappearance/dead"

The people of Berk believed Snotlout had died; he was declared dead, and a funeral was even held for him, despite no body ever being found. Stoick simply performed what was considered a favor to the Jorgenson family following the son's disappearance. During the years without Snotlout, the group changed significantly; each of them carried a sense of guilt over his disappearance in their own way. Gradually, the team of dragon riders drifted apart—they remained together, but things weren't the same as before. No one said it out loud, but the absence of a teammate truly weighed on everyone.

The twins were the first to change. They could be quite cruel with the pranks they played on Snotlout, but they didn't hate him. Tuffnut was deeply shaken when he finally realized that one of his best friends was never coming back, and his brother's sorrow only fueled Ruffnut's anger regarding the situation. This led to numerous misunderstandings and arguments—fights that inevitably involved Astrid as well. It was only when Berk finally accepted that Snotlout was dead and could not be found that the twins decided to leave the team for good; for them, the fun was gone, and even though Astrid argued that it wasn't supposed to be about fun, they wouldn't listen to her.

Fishlegs was the next to drift away; he offered no explanation, merely making excuses to gradually distance himself. Hiccup suspected the main reason was that Fishlegs had grown weary of the constant bickering and wanted to focus on his dragon studies with Meatlug. Hiccup also suspected that some of Fishlegs' research trips were actually just pretexts to search for Snotlout on his own, though he never pressed the issue.

That left only Astrid and Hiccup. As the group fell apart, traumas Hiccup thought he had long since overcome resurfaced. He blamed himself daily for losing his temper and acting out of anger when he kicked his cousin off the team. He had known Snotlout for years and understood his behavior; even if he didn't agree with most of what Snotlout did, he was still family. Yet, Hiccup hadn't hesitated to take away the very thing that had restored their friendship. He couldn't accept his own stupidity in sending his cousin away after it had taken years to win that friendship back. Spitelout never let him forget that his son’s death was on Hiccup’s hands (and even though it wasn't true) Hiccup accepted it as reality. His uncle had never liked him much, everyone knew that, but after the "incident", Spitelout became even worse. Hiccup had ruined the slim chance he had of his uncle seeing him as anything other than a "mistake"; he had only given Spitelout more reasons to hate him.

Astrid was the only one who didn't change, at least in everyone else's eyes; she remained the same girl she’d always been. She focused on training harder to become a better warrior; now that the team was gone, she needed to be stronger to help defend Berk whenever the need arose. She showed no signs of weakness and refused to blame herself for what had happened. Running away had been Snotlout's decision; neither she nor Hiccup bore any fault. Snotlout had dug his own grave, so she had no reason to grieve. Unlike the twins, Fishlegs, or even Hiccup, Astrid and Snotlout had never been friends. She didn't miss him, not did she scan the clouds hoping to see a Monstrous Nightmare flying back to Berk. After the bodyless funeral, Astrid simply acted as though Snotlout had never existed, continuing her training routine as the only remaining dragon rider alongside Hiccup.

Spitelout’s reaction was arguably the most shocking. Despite being a terrible father who, for the most part, acted as if he didn't care about Snotlout, he was still a father. Ironically, the reality of his fatherhood seemed to hit him only after Snotlout was gone; while his son was by his side, he had never once thought to show he cared. Yet now, he acted as though he had cared all along—perhaps a true hypocrite, or simply someone who realized his regret too late.

About Snotlout

He never stays in one place for long; while the chances of being found are slim, he prefers not to push his luck. His appearance has changed significantly, though his personality remains much the same, only now he is even more arrogant and cruel toward others. He feels nothing but anger over never having been valued, even when he was genuinely putting in the effort. To everyone from Berk (and even outsiders) he was always just the "muttonhead," and his family was no different, never truly caring about him.

Krogan found him during a dragon auction and saw potential for a partnership (though, in truth, it was more of an kidnapping) Krogan needed information while Snotlout think could fool many vikings, Krogan could spot a foreigner from a mile away and knew he didn't belong in that region.

At first, Snotlout refused to work with Krogan, unwilling to take orders again. However, Krogan revealed a plan far better than simply hunting and killing dragons out of spite for his old friends: instead of just killing dragons, he could actually destroy Berk and reduce the place to ashes. He couldn't do it alone, though; he needed Krogan’s help. They needed to find the King of Dragons; with that creature and an army of dragons at their command, they would destroy not only Berk but every insignificant being across the archipelago and beyond. The prospect of wielding such island-destroying power was utterly tempting, so naturally, Snotlout agreed, becoming Krogan’s right-hand man. He also agreed because Krogan allowed him to lead his men (unlike Hiccup, who had doubted his leadership abilities).

Krogan recognized Snotlout’s value and importance, letting him take command whenever he pleased.

Krogan has become a father figure to Snotlout, or at least, Krogan views Snotlout as a son, but Snotlout is the sort of angry teenager who always shouts "You're not my dad!" at the slightest show of concern from an older figure who cares about him.

He wears a cloak with Hookfang scales (similar to the one in the movie) He lost sight in one eye due to the number of lightning strikes, and he also lost some hearing on that side of his face. ( Not all hearing loss, but perhaps 15% of him having difficulty hearing on that side)

The scars are from lightning strikes that left burns, and others on his arms are from fights he got into before agreeing to work with Krogan (these only happened because Hookfang wasn't around)
